Ahly start Egyptian League campaign against Modern Sport, Zamalek face Ceramica - Egyptian Football

Al-Ahram Weekly27-07-2025
Ahly have been drawn to face Modern Sport in the first matchday of the 2025–2026 Egyptian Premier League, while arch-rivals Zamalek kick off their campaign against Ceramica Cleopatra.
The 2025–2026 Egyptian Premier League draw, held on Sunday, revealed that the highly anticipated Cairo Derby between Ahly and Zamalek has been scheduled for matchweek nine, according to the fixture list released by the Egyptian Pro League.
The new season kicks off on 8 August and will feature 21 clubs competing in a two-phase format. In the first phase, each team will play 20 matches in a single round-robin format. The top seven teams will then advance to a title-deciding group, while the remaining 14 will fight to avoid relegation in a separate group.
Among other key clashes, Ahly will face Pyramids in matchweek five, and Zamalek are set to meet Pyramids in week 20.
Opening fixtures and new regulations
In other opening fixtures, Wadi Degla will take on Pyramids at Al Salam Stadium, Ismaily hosts Petrojet, and Smouha plays Tala'ea El Gaish at Borg El Arab Stadium. National Bank will face Ghazl El Mahalla, while Pharco clashes with ENPPI.
League president Ahmed Diab stated that changes were made to the competition's regulations this season, with the second-phase draw to be held 10 days before its commencement.
"This year's format aims to increase competitiveness and accommodate the national team's schedule," Diab told reporters.
Four teams will be relegated at the end of the second phase from the lower group. Rankings in the final phase will take into account points from the first stage and direct competition within each group.

Swimming: Tunisia's Jaouadi pushes through pain for second world gold - Omni sports

Tunisia's Ahmed Jaouadi added the 1,500m freestyle world title to his 800m crown on Sunday for a Singapore double, with two-time Olympic champion Bobby Finke only third. Jaouadi won a thriller to grab gold in 14min 34.41sec, ahead of Germany's Sven Schwarz (14:35.69) and the American world record holder Finke (14:36.60). With three laps to go in the gruelling long-distance race, it was a three-way tussle between Jaouadi, Schwarz and Finke. Jaouadi timed it to perfection, leading at the bell from the German and holding him off in the final lap. "A lot of pain, a lot of struggle. I knew that everyone is struggling and everyone is feeling the pain," said the Tunisian. "I wasn't the only one. I just tried to be the strongest one mentally. It was a good one because all of the boys swum a good race and everyone tried to win it. "Through my body it was a lot of pain, it hurts. But through my mind was I want this medal, I want to win it. It's as simple as that." Jaouadi's 800m free title earlier in the week was his first major crown. Finke is the two-time reigning Olympic champion in the 1,500m and world record holder following his 14:30.67 in Paris a year ago. Jaouadi was sixth in the French capital. Ademola Lookman requests transfer from Atalanta citing broken promises and poor treatment - Africa

Lookman made the announcement with a statement posted on Instagram. The 27-year-old said the request was made 'after many months of broken promises and what I feel has been poor treatment towards me as both a human being and as a professional footballer. 'Sadly I feel I have no choice but to speak out for what I believe is right and I feel that enough is enough,' he said. He said in the statement that it had already been decided that it was the 'right time" for him "to move on and experience a new adventure.' He said he and the club ownership had been 'in agreement' that now was the right time for a transfer, and that the club agreed to let him leave if a fair offer was made. He said an offer did arrive but now the club was not sticking to its end of the agreement. 'Despite now receiving an offer in alignment to what I believe had been discussed, sadly the club are blocking the opportunity for reasons I do not understand,' he said. Lookman did not give other details about the offer. (For more sports news and updates, follow Ahram Online Sports on Twitter at @AO_Sports and on Facebook at AhramOnlineSports.) Swimming: Australia's beaming Harris foils Walsh treble bid at swimming worlds - Omni sports

Australia's Meg Harris denied Gretchen Walsh a sprint treble at swimming's world championships in Singapore on Sunday, winning the 50m freestyle for her first individual world title. Harris, the Paris Olympics silver medallist, powered home in 24.02sec to beat Chinese pair Wu Qingfeng (24.26) and Cheng Yujie (24.28). The American Walsh, who won gold in the 50m and 100m butterfly in Singapore, finished fourth in 24.40. Australia also won the men's 50m freestyle, with Cam McEvoy taking gold on Saturday. Harris said becoming an individual world champion was "the dream I have been dreaming of the whole time". "This is why I swim," said the 23-year-old, who could not stop smiling as the magnitude of her achievement set in. "I still can't put it into words, it'll take a while to process." World record holder Sarah Sjoestroem of Sweden, the reigning Olympic champion and a four-time world title-holder in the event, did not compete in Singapore. "I love sprinting, I love racing. Could not be more happy," added Harris. The Australian has now won six world golds in her career. The previous five were in relay events.
