'Pokemon Legends: Z-A' gets Oct. 16 release date
The Pokémon Company International announced in a press release Wednesday that the video game is set for release Oct. 16. Pre-orders begin June 5 via the Nintendo eShop, the same day as the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 console.
Those who purchase the physical or digital version of Pokémon Legends: Z-A for the original Nintendo Switch will have the option to later buy an upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 version.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A marks "a new frontier" for the franchise, according to the press release. The game blends "an RPG story unfolding in a single city with action elements and a real-time battle system."
Players will choose between three starter Pokémon: Chikorita, Totodile and Tepig.
The game's cover art depicts the main characters and their Pokémon taking on a Mega-Evolved Pokémon in Lumiose City.
Nintendo previously showcased the game's "wild zones" and the city setting.

Starz greenlights prequel series 'Power: Origins'
July 22 (UPI) -- Cable network Starz announced it has given the greenlight to Power: Origins, a prequel series focused on the lives of Power franchise characters Ghost and Tommy. The show will follow a young Ghost and Tommy as they attempt to make a name for themselves in New York City. Omari Hardwick and Joseph Sikora originated the roles of James St. Patrick, aka Ghost, and Tommy Egan, respectively, in Power. The network said Power: Origins will have an 18-episode first season and feature the return of MeKai Curtis as Kanan Stark, the role he played in Power Book III: Raising Kanan. Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson played the older Kanan in Power. "I'm excited to continue to explore the origin stories of the Power Universe's founding fathers," Sascha Penn, the new series' showrunner, writer and executive producer, said in the announcement. "Ghost and Tommy's backstories have fueled years of constant fascination and speculation among fans, and I'm thrilled to be able to answer some long-held questions and share new layers of the story that viewers won't see coming." Power: Origins will mark the fifth series in the franchise, following Power, Power Book II: Ghost, which follows Ghost's son Tariq, Power Book III: Raising Kanan, featuring Curtis as a young Kanan, and Power Book IV: Force, starring Sikora as an adult Tommy in Chicago. "Our fans have been asking for Ghost and Tommy's origins story since we first met them in Power -- and with the launch of this series, we're delivering in a big way," said Kathryn Busby, president of original programming for Starz. "This marks an electrifying new chapter in the franchise's evolution as we dive deep into the legacy of these iconic characters and the explosive moments that shaped their path."

Venice Film Festival: 'Frankenstein,' 'Smashing Machine' among lineup

The roster of films is a pool of both splashy titles with major names attached, to smaller flicks hoping to make more than a ripple as they take the fest plunge. Set to run from Aug. 27 through Sept. 6, some of the festival's more anticipated movies include Bugonia, a sci-fi dark comedy directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring frequent collaborator Emma Stone, and The Smashing Machine, director Benny Safdie's tale about two-time UFC heavyweight champion Mark Kerr, portrayed by Dwayne Johnson. Also screening In Competition is Frankenstein, Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic gothic novel. Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi and Mia Goth star in the film, which will be released on Netflix. Two other original offerings from Netflix were also selected: Kathryn Bigelow's A House of Dynamite, with Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Greta Lee, Gabriel Basso and Jared Harris on deck, and Noah Baumbach's Jay Kelly, starring George Clooney. Fellow streamer Mubi's movies are also likely to grab some eyes, as its La Grazia, from Paolo Sorrentino, will open the festival. Father Mother Sister Brother, directed by Jim Jarmusch and starring Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Adam Driver and Charlotte Rampling, will also screen. Out of Competition titles include Luca Guadagnino's After the Hunt, starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri, and Julian Schnabel's In the Hand of Dante, featuring Martin Scorsese, Oscar Isaac, Gal Gadot and Gerard Butler. Gus Van Sant's Dead Man's Wire, starring a powerful trio of Bill Skarsgård, Colman Domingo and Al Pacino, was also selected, along with Marc by Sofia, Sofia Coppola's documentary about fashion designer Marc Jacobs, and the Werner Herzog documentary Ghost Elephants. As for indie entries, Mona Fastvold's The Testament of Ann Lee, starring Amanda Seyfried, is another piece that has some buzz. Heavy metal pioneer Ozzy Osbourne dies at 76

File Photo by David Silpa/UPI | License Photo July 22 (UPI) -- Heavy metal pioneer Ozzy Osbourne has died just weeks after playing his farewell show with Black Sabbath, his family confirmed. He was 76. "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning," Osbourne's family confirmed in statement to The Hollywood Reporter. "He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time." Osbourne, who had Parkinson's disease, played his final show earlier this month in Birmingham, England, with Black Sabbath bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward, as well as special guests including Metallica, Guns n' Roses and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler. Mercury Studios announced a film of the concert, titled Back to the Beginning: Ozzy's Final Bow, will have a movie theater run beginning in 2026. Osbourne, nicknamed "The Prince of Darkness," was born John Michael Osbourne on Dec. 3, 1948, in Birmingham. He played in multiple bands with Butler, a bassist and lyricist, before they became founding members of Black Sabbath in 1969. The singer, who struggled with addiction, was fired from Black Sabbath in April 1979, but maintained a successful solo career in the ensuing decades. He reunited with the band in 2011, and served as vocalist for the album 13 in 2013. In 2002, Osbourne, his wife, Sharon, and their kids, Kelly and Jack, became household names when MTV reality series The Osbournes chronicled their day-to-day lives. The show aired until 2005. Black Sabbath played a final show on July 5, with Osbourne seated throughout the performance. The band performed hits from across Osbourne's career, including "Crazy Train," "Iron Man" and "Mama, I'm Coming Home." Osbourne is survived by Sharon, Kelly and Jack, as well as his children Louis John, Elliot Kingsley and Jessica Starshine from his first marriage to Thelma Riley.
