Raiders hoping Ashton Jeanty's physical running style can hold up in the NFL

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Ashton Jeanty took a handoff Monday on the first day in full pads and appeared to be stopped for a short gain.
But somehow he wiggled free and avoided tacklers for at least a 10-yard gain.
It was a reminder of what he did at Boise State, using his low center of gravity and strength — he can squat more than 600 pounds — to break tackles on his way to a second-place finish for the Heisman Trophy.
And why the Las Vegas Raiders
selected him sixth
overall in this year's draft, an unusually high pick for a running back in today's NFL.
But how long can Jeanty hold up with such a physical running style, even with all the power packed into his 5-foot-8, 208-pound frame, remains to be seen.
The Raiders apparently are willing to find out.
'Ashton has his own unique style,' offensive coordinator Chip Kelly said. 'I don't think we're going to ever coach that out of him. I think he's amazing after contact and that's probably one of his biggest strengths. So our job right now is just getting him lined up, having him understand what our offense, what our scheme is and then let him go in terms of his running style.'
Boise State certainly did that.
Jeanty led the nation with 2,601 yards and 29 touchdowns rushing last season, coming up just
27 yards short
of matching Barry Sanders' college record set in his Heisman-winning season in 1988.
Perhaps more remarkable, Jeanty gained 1,970 yards after contact, which not only set the NCAA single-season record, but also by itself would have made him the nation's leading rusher.
Jeanty said he makes sure he stays at his physical peak by adhering to a nutritional plan and getting the right amount of sleep in addition to his on-field work.
Something he is able to do now without the extra duties of classes and homework.
'That's what's most exciting, because you can become the best version of yourself,' Jeanty said. 'You can devote all the time you want to the game of football. And this game, you get what you put in. I'm grateful for that and I'm going to keep putting in and getting out great things.'
Being available wasn't a problem in college. He played 40 games over three seasons, missing only two in 2023 because of a leg injury.
If Jeanty remains healthy, he very well could deliver for the Raiders all that they hoped when they drafted him. He has shown elite footwork going back to organized team activities, but now with full-padded practices underway, there is even more attention to what he might accomplish.
And Jeanty hasn't disappointed, earning rave reviews from coach Pete Carroll over his work the past two days. Carroll pointed to a shot that Jeanty took from linebacker Elandon Roberts on Tuesday that sent the back to the turf.
'Didn't even faze him,' Carroll said. 'A perfect reaction of a response. And then the next carry he busted.'
Jeanty carries a confidence that is easy to see, and he doesn't appear overwhelmed by trying to prove he can excel at the sport's highest level.
Nor does he seemed burdened by living up to expectations of being the highest-drafted running back since the New York Giants took Penn State's Saquon Barkley second overall in 2018.
'He's got all the God-given ability in the world,' linebacker Devin White said. 'He can stop on a dime out (of) the backfield running routes, he can run in between the tackles and he knows how to stick his foot in the ground and go. He had a big run the other day, and he's so little that you just see him just pop out and you're like, 'Gah-lee.'
'I love competing against him. When we did one-on-ones (Monday), I went with him every rep. I didn't want nobody else.'
Jeanty is being counted on to not only boost a Las Vegas rushing attack that last season gained a league-worst 79.8 yards per game, but he has been working at catching passes either out of the backfield and lining up wide on the line of scrimmage.
And he has been working at special teams as a return specialist. The Raiders are using their best players in that area of the game, including star pass rusher Maxx Crosby.
'Jeanty is doing great for us,' special teams coordinator Tom McMahon said. 'He's a natural catcher, which is the most important thing. You've got to have the ball first, but he's got really, really good run skill. He's just got an ability to square all defenders up. ... When you can square somebody up, you can beat them both ways. He's been impressive, and he acts like a rookie and he works like a rookie. So, to me, that's straight respect for the vets, too.'

Pete Carroll on return to Seattle: "It's the only game we've got"

For 14 seasons, Pete Carroll's home stadium was Lumen Field. Now, after a year away from the sideline, Carroll's first preseason game as Raiders head coach will be at that same location. But when asked about it on Tuesday, Carroll noted he doesn't see it as a big deal. 'It's the only game we've got. It happens to be in Seattle,' Carroll said in his Tuesday press conference. 'I loved my time in Seattle, loved the fans and the people that we met, and dealt with, and competed with. 'But it's a game for us. We're going to go play ball.' Carroll accumulated a 137-89-1 record as Seahawks head coach from 2010-2023, winning Super Bowl XLVIII to cap the 2013 season and another NFC title the following year. 'It was an experiment, coming out of USC to go to the NFL and to see if the way we had developed — the culture we had created, the concept of competing the way we did — would carry over,' Carroll said of his time with the Seahawks. 'Mostly, it was the way we treated the people in our program. I wasn't sure — I had an inkling that it would be OK. But I didn't know, and a lot of people probably questioned it as well. But we didn't change anything. We maintained the philosophy. We adapted to the players and, of course, the game. 'And after it's said and done, I feel really good about the time we spent there. We were able to stay with what we believed in and make it work out alright. So, that's really what stands out about it.'

Injuries to key players dampen excitement for WNBA's inaugural Rivals Week

NEW YORK (AP) — The WNBA hoped to create some buzz with its inaugural Rivals Week, which is slated to begin on Saturday. Unfortunately, injuries to key players like Napheesa Collier, Breanna Stewart, Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese has dampened some of the excitement. The week was set to tip-off with a primetime matchup between Clark's Fever and Reese's Sky on Saturday night. Clark is definitely out while still recovering from a groin strain that's sidelined her already for a few weeks. Reese has missed four of the past five games with a back injury. Collier and Stewart were set for a second meeting between Minnesota and New York on Sunday, but neither will play in the game. Collier is sidelined with a sprained right ankle and Stewart has a bone bruise in her right knee. The two teams played an epic WNBA Finals last season, although both sides have downplayed it being a rivalry just yet. 'It's a rivalry because of what happened in the Finals last year and I think it's good that it has people talking,' Liberty coach Sandy Brondello said. 'We have passionate fans. We have people talking about our league and that's a good thing.' Right now only four games separate second-place New York (18-10) from eighth place Golden State (14-14) with a month left in the season. 'The timing of that week is critical, because in August you start to really make that playoff push,' WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said back when the Rivals Week was announced. 'So it would be great to have those matchups during that period to drive that playoff push into September and crown a champion in October.' Power poll rankings Minnesota remained the No. 1 team in the poll with Atlanta and New York behind the Lynx. Riding a five-game winning streak, Indiana moved up to fourth. Phoenix and Seattle followed the Fever. Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Golden State were the next three. Washington, Dallas, Connecticut and Chicago rounded out the poll. It's the first time since Week 6 that the Sun aren't at the bottom of the poll. Ratings boon Las Vegas' blowout loss to Minnesota on Saturday drew an average viewership of 1.6 million fans, peaking at 2 million. As a whole, games on ABC are up 20% from the regular season last year on the network. Player of the week Collier of Minnesota was the AP player of the week after averaging 24 points, six rebounds and 3.5 assists to help the Lynx win both their games last week. Other players receiving votes included Allisha Gray of Atlanta, Natasha Howard of Indiana and Sabrina Ionescu of New York. Game of the week Minnesota at New York, Sunday. With Stewart and Collier both missing this game a little of the luster has come out of it. Still, it's a WNBA Finals rematch and there's definitely a little extra on this game.

Pete Carroll and Geno Smith had very different responses regarding their return to Seattle

It may just be a preseason game for the Raiders on Thursday, but for a few Raiders coaches and players it means a bit more. Notably by Pete Carroll, Geno Smith, and Jamal Adams. Carroll coached in Seattle for 14 years and won a Super Bowl there. Geno Smith spent the past six years in Seattle under Carroll, seeing the best years of his career. Adams spent four years there, including a Pro Bowl season. So, yeah, heading back to the place all three spent the majority of their NFL careers is notable. For Carroll and Adams, a full NFL season has passed since they last represented the Seahawks. But for Geno it's the last time he set foot on an NFL field. So, it's very fresh in his mind. 'Man, looking forward to it," Geno said of heading to Seattle Thursday. "Looking forward to seeing my old teammates, old coaches, people in the building. It will be fun. Also going back with Pete, that's pretty cool. Another opportunity to compete with my guys, that's what it's all about.' 'It means everything. It means a lot to me. It was a place I called home for six years. I had a son there and I was able to really just turn my career around. Met some really cool people, got to know a lot of great people there. A lot of great teammates over the years. Just really special things, special thoughts when I think about it.' While Geno gushed about how special this game was for him, Carroll took a different approach. He just downplayed it like it was a regular preseason game. 'It's the only game we got and it happens to be in Seattle," said Carroll. "I love my time in Seattle and love the fans and the people that we met and dealt with, but it's a game for us and we're gonna play ball.' Seahawks head coach Mike McDonald said he hopes the Seattle fans greet the return of Pete Carroll and Geno the game starts. "We should be cheering Pete when he gets here," said McDonald. "We should be cheering Geno. How could you not? We should be cheering those guys. Now, when the ball is snapped, we're going to go try to win the game, and we're not going to be playing our starters, but we're going to go compete like heck. I think Pete would appreciate that. I hope Pete gets a great ovation. He deserves it." Interesting that McDonald added the Seahawks won't be playing the starters, because Carroll suggested today he will not be sitting the Raiders starters. Should Geno Smith come trotting out onto the field on the first snap, it will be interesting to hear how the Seattle fans greet him.
