(Video) Local VFX Artist Sofian Collabs With 'Superman' Star David Corenswet
Since posting his teaser, fans have been eagerly awaiting what the Malaysian talent has been working on in the editing room. Now that the highly anticipated film has been released (Thursday, 10th July), so too has the influencer's new promotional video with the actor. Watch:
Yesterday (Wednesday, 9th July), Sofian finally released his collaboration video with David Corenswet. The skit follows the Malaysian artist as he auditions for a role in the 'Superman' film alongside the leading star. During the audition, he stands next to David and demonstrates his superhuman strength and ability to fly, all of which are later revealed to be special effects, exposing that he was cheating to land the role.
When it came to demonstrating the final ability, heat vision, Sofian struggled to project beams from his eyes until David handed him Clark Kent's glasses. With them on, Sofian successfully destroyed a cardboard cut-out of a monster using his heat vision, but soon lost control and ended up damaging the camera lens. As the 28-year-old was processing what happened, the actor took the chance to promote the film. 'Auditioned to be Superman, but David was the judge. Let's just say… cheating doesn't fly❌' the content creator wrote in the caption.
As expected, Malaysians expressed their excitement over Sofian's latest collaboration, once again praising him for his impressive VFX work. Many also tagged 'Superman' director James Gunn, urging him to hire the young talent for the visual effects team on his next project. With all the collaborations he has done and his skills improving with each one, it's surely time Sofian was given the opportunity to work on a Hollywood production.

Can Superman save DC? James Gunn's high-risk reboot sets the stage for a franchise revival
LOS ANGELES, July 12 — Superman is often called upon to save the world from evildoers, but in his latest big-screen incarnation, he's also being asked to swoop in and save a franchise. James Gunn's Superman, which opened in theatres worldwide this week, is a reboot aimed at relaunching the so-called DC Universe of comic book-based superhero movies, which also features Wonder Woman and Batman. The celluloid efforts of Warner Bros. and DC Studios have been widely eclipsed by Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe — the world of Iron Man, Thor, Black Panther and the Fantastic Four, who are getting their own reboot later this month. 'Warner Bros. has invested a lot of energy and money in trying to refocus and renew DC Studios, and this is going to be the big release from that,' analyst David A. Gross from Franchise Entertainment Research told AFP. The heavy task falls on the shoulders of Gunn, the writer-director who won praise from fans of the genre with Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. The movie's rollout has already encountered several headwinds, including a right-wing backlash to Gunn's comments on Superman's role as an immigrant, and scepticism from fans of the previous Superman films helmed by director Zack Snyder. Gunn has shrugged off the high stakes surrounding the movie's box office success. 'Is there something riding on it? Yeah, but it's not as big as people make it out to be,' he told GQ Magazine. 'They hear these numbers that the movie's only going to be successful if it makes US$700 million or something and it's just complete and utter nonsense.' The hype around the movie is real — the White House even superimposed President Donald Trump onto one of the movie's official posters with the caption 'THE SYMBOL OF HOPE. TRUTH. JUSTICE. THE AMERICAN WAY. SUPERMAN TRUMP.' 'A diminished genre' Warner Bros. hopes the DC Universe can catch up with Marvel which — after years of huge successes with the Avengers movies — has seen more muted box office returns with the recent Thunderbolts and Captain America: Brave New World. Gross explained that superhero films hit a peak right before the Covid-19 pandemic, with box office earnings and audience enthusiasm waning ever since that time. 'It's really a diminished genre,' Gross said. However, the analyst said early buzz for Superman was 'really good'. The film stars up-and-comer David Corenswet as the new Superman/Clark Kent, with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan playing love interest Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as arch-villain Lex Luthor. The story follows the Man of Steel coming to terms with his alien identity as he finds his place in the human world. The supporting cast boasts a selection of other DC Comics characters, from the peacekeeping Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion) — who is scheduled to reprise the role in upcoming TV series Lanterns — to the mace-wielding Hawkgirl. Gross noted that July 'is the top moviegoing month of the year,' leading tracking estimates to forecast a total of more than US$100 million for the film's opening weekend in North America. superhero films hit a peak right before the Covid-19 pandemic, with box office earnings and audience enthusiasm waning ever since that time. — Picture via Facebook/Warner Bros. Pictures 'The story of America' DC Studios however must shake off a reputation for producing mediocre films that did not score well with audiences. The last round of 'DC Extended Universe' films included the well-liked Wonder Woman (2017) starring Gal Gadot — but also box office flops like Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023) and the under-performing Aquaman sequel with Jason Momoa. 'The success was mixed, and they were spending a lot of money on some of the new spinoff characters who were not working particularly well,' Gross said, pointing at 2021's The Suicide Squad — directed by Gunn — as an example. The last films featuring Superman, starring Henry Cavill and directed by Snyder, were relatively successful for Warner Bros. until Justice League — DC's effort at recreating the Avengers vibe — which lost millions of dollars. Fans of Snyder have stirred up negative buzz for the new Superman movie, voicing hope online that the reboot fails out of a sense of loyalty to the previous films. The backlash was further widened after right-wing pundits groaned about Superman's specific characterisation as an immigrant, lamenting the superhero had become 'woke'. Gunn addressed the criticism, telling The Times newspaper that 'Superman is the story of America', with the character reflecting those who 'came from other places and populated the country'. 'I'm telling a story about a guy who is uniquely good, and that feels needed now,' he added. Ultimately, time will soon tell if Corenswet's chiseled looks and Gunn's directorial vision will be the superpowers that DC Studios need — or prove to be its Kryptonite. — AFP

Amateur M'sian golfer barred over long skirt sparks viral debate on dress code
A video posted by Malaysian golf content creator Maryam Ishak (@ maryamishakgolf) has gone viral after she claimed she was denied entry to play at the Royal Kampung Kuantan Club because she wore a long skirt. Maryam, who has been active in golf since 2018, said she was supposed to tee off at 8.30am on July 11 but was stopped by the club secretary over her outfit. 'I've worn long skirts to many clubs with no problem. There's nothing in the rulebook that says it's not allowed,' she said, adding that her friends, who travelled all the way from Seremban, also decided not to play out of solidarity. She explained that her skirt did not hinder movement, and she took care to dress modestly. 'I don't understand what's wrong with a long skirt. I can run and jump in it. It doesn't hurt anyone.' The video drew over 70,000 views after a day of its post and hundreds of reactions, with many questioning the club's decision. @ari7474 commented: 'Never heard long skirt not allowed. This is a good way to get some explanation from them.' @Tayapawau urged action: 'File an official complaint to MGA... then raise it again during the AGM meeting at Kg Kuantan.' @Mukhriz Zakaria added: 'Most clubs use 'conservative length' – usually 1-2 inches above the knee. In Malaysia, maybe this has changed to suit Muslim women, I'm not sure.' @Abdun Halick clarified: 'Yes, long skirts are generally allowed if they meet the dress code. Some clubs may have specific requirements, so it's best to check.' @Ree Channel Golf urged a clarification from the club, commenting: 'Waiting for the said club to provide an explanation for this. Need to know the justification. Hope they have a good explanation on this.' The Royal Kampung Kuantan Club had since reportedly stated that each club has its own dress code which must be abided at all times but did not comment further.

Describing its latest French fry promotion, McDonald's Malaysia chief marketing officer Chin Mei Lee called it a meal for fry fans, by fry fans. 'We know how much Malaysians love our fries. 'It's never enough! That's exactly what inspired the McDonald's Fans Fries Meal. 'We wanted to create something truly memorable that brings people together over the one item they can never resist. 'Whether it's with friends or family, this is our way of saying thank you and celebrating those joyful moments with everyone,' she said. The double extra large serving of deep-fried Russet Burbank potato strips are made up of a large and a medium helping, amounting to 261g in weight. A diner who had come to the Bukit Bintang restaurant to purchase a meal said she loved McDonald's french fries. 'I enjoy them with a bit of salt,' she added. In 2022, it collaborated with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to launch the McDonald's Fries Crosswalk at the Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Sultan Ismail intersection. In 2023, it transformed Kuala Lumpur Tower into a French fry by illuminating the tower with golden, yellow lights. The McDonald's XXL size with Fans Fries Meal is available until July 13 for RM10. The meal comes with a small drink and a small side of fries. It is only available via dine-in and drive-through orders.
