Soccer-France aiming for united front in Women's Euro clash with England
ZURICH (Reuters) -France will put on a united front when they play England in their Women's Euro group opener in Zurich on Saturday, the team said on Friday, despite former captain Wendie Renard and record goal-scorer Eugenie Le Sommer being left out of the tournament squad.
Coach Laurent Bonadei, who has spent a lot of time defending his decision not to bring the duo to Switzerland, told reporters he would be rotating his team at the Euros if that is what it took to end their wait for an elusive first major trophy.
"In my mind, all the players who are part of this group have their chance to bring their stone to the building of this team," he said. "Tomorrow there will be 11 players who will start this match but I can already tell you that those who will start the match against Wales will be different."
France are drawn in Group D with England, Wales and Netherlands, with the top two going through to the knockout stage.
Bonadei's new captain Griege Mbock is set to miss the game through injury but the French have sought to foster a strong mentality in which every player is ready to step up, regardless of age or experience.
"It's true that there have been a lot of changes over the past year but we remain a strong group, the French team. Of course, we have responsibilities that may be different at certain times but everyone has a role to play in this team," midfielder Sakina Karchaoui told reporters.
"We are all present for each other, we are building a strong team, we have worked on all aspects. Now, there is a very good competition coming and it is up to us to show what the French team has to offer."

Cricket-Rahul, Pant shine as India extend lead over England to 357
Cricket - Second Test - England v India - Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham, Britain - July 5, 2025 India's KL Rahul in action Action Images via Reuters/Paul Childs BIRMINGHAM, England (Reuters) -KL Rahul scored a half-century before Rishabh Pant literally threw his bat at everything as India moved on to 177-3 to stretch their commanding lead to 357 runs over England at lunch on day four of the second test at Edgbaston on Saturday. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter walked in at 126-3 and immediately entertained the crowd, smashing sixes and boundaries before providing the day's most memorable moment when he lost his grip on his bat. He sent his willow flying to square leg where it landed safely, much to the amusement of the Edgbaston crowd, but not the England bowlers who had a productive first hour before their momentum was halted. Pant was unbeaten on 41 alongside skipper Shubman Gill (24 not out) at the interval, their quickfire partnership of 51 runs coming off 53 balls. Resuming on their overnight 64-1, the morning session in overcast conditions with the floodlights on began with both Karun Nair and Rahul surviving early scares when thick edges flew through gaps in the slip cordon. But Brydon Carse's persistence paid off when he tempted Nair into a drive and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith's eyes lit up when he took the catch to dismiss the Indian batter for 26. Rahul remained patient and he continued to find gaps on the offside as he brought up his 18th test fifty, but Josh Tongue struck with a ball that seamed off the pitch to go past the Indian batter's defence and hit the stumps. Tongue's delight was short-lived, however, as Pant walked in and unsettled the fast bowler with a boundary before he danced down the track to smash it over his head for six. Pant survived when, on 10, he smashed the ball straight to mid off where Zak Crawley spilled the catch, and he made the bowlers pay with a flurry of fours and another six. England won the first test at Headingley by five wickets. (Reporting by Rohith Nair in Bengaluru, editing by Ed Osmond)

Ivanisevic criticises Tsitsipas after Wimbledon first-round exit
GORAN IVANISEVIC gave a scathing assessment of Stefanos Tsitsipas, saying he has 'never seen a more unprepared player' in his life following the Greek world number 26's opening round exit at Wimbledon. Tsitsipas, the 2021 French Open and 2023 Australian Open runner-up, was forced to retire from his Wimbledon first-round match while trailing 6-3 6-2 to French qualifier Valentin Royer on Monday due to a back injury. The 26-year-old, who said he had no answers to his ongoing fitness problems after his elimination, appointed Croatian Ivanisevic as his coach in May after a string of disappointing results at the Grand Slams. Tsitsipas, a former world number three, has reached only one quarter-final in his last nine Grand Slam tournaments. 'It's simple and it's not simple. I've talked to him a lot of times. If he solves some things outside of tennis, then he has a chance and he'll return to where he belongs, because he's too good a player to be out of the top 10,' Ivanisevic told Serbian network Sport Klub after Tsitsipas' exit. 'He wants to but he doesn't do anything. All 'I want, I want', but I don't see that progress... I was shocked, I have never seen a more unprepared player in my life. With this knee, I am three times more fit than him. This is really bad.' Ivanisevic, who won Wimbledon as a player in 2001, helped Novak Djokovic claim nine of his 24 Grand Slam titles before leaving his team in March last year. He then had a short stint with Kazakh world number 11 Elena Rybakina this season. - Reuters

Soccer-Burnley sign England defender Walker on a two-year deal
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - World Cup - European Qualifiers - Group K - England v Albania - Wembley Stadium, London, Britain - March 21, 2025 England's Kyle Walker reacts Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Couldridge/File Photo (Reuters) -England right-back Kyle Walker has joined Burnley on a two-year deal after his contract with Manchester City expired in the summer, the newly promoted Premier League club said on Saturday. Former Tottenham Hotspur player Walker joined City in 2017 and has made over 200 league appearances for them. But manager Pep Guardiola revealed in January that Walker had asked to leave the club at the end of the season. Walker, who won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, the Champions League and the Club World Cup with City, joined AC Milan on loan in January, where he made 11 Serie A appearances. The 35-year-old, who has earned 96 England caps, said he joined Burnley after speaking to their manager Scott Parker, who was his teammate at Spurs. Parker guided Burnley back to the English top-flight with a second-place finish in the Championship. "When I spoke to Scott and heard about his plans for next season, it was an opportunity I jumped at. He's done an amazing job," Walker said in a statement. "I can't wait to come in and add my experience and quality to what looks (like) an exciting squad." Burnley begin their Premier League campaign with a visit to Spurs on August 16.
