Marlins walk off Royals behind Kyle Stowers huge night
Royals left fielder John Rave, a 27-year-old rookie, had a big game with his first two career homers and four RBIs. Adam Frazier, acquired from the Pirates on Wednesday, added a two-run, two-out, pinch-hit double in the top of the 10th that was soon overshadowed by Stowers.
Miami is 20-10 over its past 30 games.
Stowers slugged a two-run homer and blooped an RBI single in his first two at- bats. Stowers' third-inning single improved him to 8-for-8 with four homers, four singles, one hit-by-pitch, one walk and nine RBIs over consecutive 10 plate appearances.
He finished Friday's game going 3-for-5 with five RBIs. He is the first player in Marlins history to hit five homers in a two-game stretch.
Neither starter earned a decision.
Miami's Sandy Alcantara allowed eight hits, two walks and four runs in six innings, striking out two.
Kansas City's Seth Lugo allowed eight hits and five runs -- both season highs -- in six innings. He struck out five without walking anybody.
There was a scary moment in the third inning as Agustin Ramirez hit a deep drive to left-center. Rave caught the ball a split-second before center fielder Kyle Isbel undercut him, and the two players collided.
Both remained in the game, however.
Miami opened the scoring in the first as Jesus Sanchez clubbed a solo homer on a high sinker, and Stowers slugged his two-run shot following a Ramirez single.
The Marlins increased their lead to 5-0 in the third. Xavier Edwards started the rally with a leadoff double that one-hopped the wall in left-center. Otto Lopez drove him in with a one-out double that bounced high off the wall in left-center before Stowers capped the rally with a two-out bloop RBI single.
The Royals got on the board in the fourth as Maikel Garcia and Salvador Perez opened the inning with singles. With one out and runners on the corners, Nick Loftin picked up an RBI with a chopped single to third that bounced about 20 feet high.
Four pitches later, Rave slugged a three-run homer, cutting Kansas City's deficit to 5-4.
Rave homered again in the ninth, tying the score 5-5 and resulting in Calvin Faucher's blown save.
After Frazier's big hit in the top of the 10th off Lake Bachar (5-0), the Marlins scored three of All-Star closer Carlos Estevez (4-3), with Ramirez singling home Derek Hill before Stowers' winning blast.

Fresh off two of the season's most impressive wins, the Atlanta Dream return home for the first time in more than three weeks to face the slumping Golden State Valkyries on Tuesday in College Park, Ga. Atlanta (15-10) went 3-3 during its recent six-game road trip, which was cut in half by the All-Star break. After dropping three of four to begin the stretch, the Dream topped the Phoenix Mercury 90-79 before picking up a 90-86 victory over the league-leading Minnesota Lynx on Sunday. As the team returns home for the first time since beating Golden State on July 7, the Dream hope the extended time on the road will serve them well going forward. Shaquille O'Neal knows exactly how much refurbishing a basketball court can mean to a community and the kids who play on it. HT Image He learned firsthand from his former Boston Celtics teammate Marquis Daniels. He was a teenager three decades ago when O'Neal was playing with the Orlando Magic and rebuilt a court in the inner-city area where Daniels was growing up. 'It was big. He was somebody growing up that I looked up to, he was the tallest person I had ever seen,' Daniels told The Associated Press. 'He was playing with my home team, the Orlando Magic, and giving back to the community and showing his appreciation. For kids like me to have a court in the inner city was huge.' Years later when they were teammates in Boston, Daniels reminded the Hall of Famer that he had been at that court dedication and how it helped change his life. After a 10-year career in the NBA, Daniels has been working as a coach at his alma mater, Auburn, since 2018. O'Neal recalled Daniels telling him the story. 'He said, 'You don't remember me?'' O'Neal said while in Rockwall, Texas, to refurbish another court near his new home. 'I said no, and he said well I was one of the kids that grew up in Orlando and you fixed up a court. Because you fixed it up, I'm here.' Refurbishing courts is commonplace around the NBA and WNBA. The Indiana Fever unveiled a new Legacy Court at a park in Indianapolis during All-Star weekend and the league has an initiative this year to put down orange lines across the country to inspire young players with a WNBA 3-point arc on outdoor courts. The renovated court at Gloria Williams park is now part of a collection of Comebaq Courts, a joint venture by Icy Hot and the Shaquille O'Neal Foundation to build well-equipped and safe courts for kids across the country. 'They found this court that hasn't been refurbished in a while and that's historical with the city," O'Neal said. Renovating one in Rockwall was actually the idea of Dallas Wings star Arike Ogunbowale. She has played her entire career in Dallas and wanted to do something for the community. 'This is like my second home. I've been here my whole career, so this initiative with Icy Hot and Shaq was a no-brainer,' she said. 'Just to give back to the youth that pours into us and my teammates every night is special." It's special to O'Neal also as he plans to spend a lot of his time in the Texas city. 'I'll get on my little scooter or motorcycle and just ride by and see what's going on with the kids,' he said. 'I work in Atlanta, but it's only an hour flight and I'm sure at some point this will be my permanent home.'
