Rao's reforms enabled coalition govts to deliver better results: Naidu
The Andhra CM is on a two-day visit to the national capital, where he is scheduled to meet PM Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and others. He met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday. In his meetings with the PM and Union ministers, Naidu will seek the Centre's support for projects in his state, release of pending funds, the Polavaram–Banakacherla river-linking project, and issues related to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) sources said.
On Tuesday evening, Naidu delivered a lecture on 'The Life and Legacy of P V Narasimha Rao' at the Prime Ministers Museum and Library (PMML) in the national capital. His lecture was the sixth in the PMML-organised Prime Ministers Lecture Series. He described Rao as a 'true Telugu bidda', or Telugu son of the soil, who 'reshaped the destiny' of India, and said the Telugu community is proud of his contributions. Rao, who passed away in December 2004, was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2024.
Referring to the recent controversy over some states accusing the Centre of imposing Hindi, Naidu said Rao had mastered 17 languages and serves as an inspiration in the current context. The Andhra CM said Rao, despite leading a minority government, accomplished the near-impossible task of forging consensus on economic reforms among socialists, communists, and capitalists alike.
Naidu credited Rao's prime ministerial tenure, and subsequently that of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, for India's first-mover advantage in the information technology sector and for building world-class infrastructure, especially in roads and telecommunications.
Naidu said that in 1978, when Deng launched China's economic reforms, both India and China were $140 billion economies, while the US economy was 15x larger at $2.3 trillion. Now, the US economy is only 1.5x bigger than China's, and more than 7x bigger than India's. 'They (China) are catching up (with the US). We are behind,' Naidu said, stressing that the journey from being the world's fourth- or third-largest economy to one of the top two will be much more challenging.
Naidu said 2014 was a turning point in India's growth story, with the country getting Modi as PM, who has 'ushered in a new era of bold and decisive leadership'. He said the goal is not just to grow fast, but to grow fairly, where every citizen, every region, and every sector shares the fruit of progress.
Citing World Bank data, he said India is among the top four most income-equal countries but stressed that the country still needs to become more equitable. He urged the top 10 per cent of India's wealthy to uplift the bottom 20 per cent, appealing to them to follow tech billionaire Bill Gates' example and 'give back to society'.
On his vision for Andhra, Naidu spoke about his government's Quantum Valley initiative in Amaravati. He urged youth to join politics and said the TDP's parliamentary party is the youngest in the Lok Sabha. He also noted that TDP's representative in the Union Cabinet, Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu, is the youngest minister at the Centre.
During his visit to Delhi, Naidu and Telangana CM A Revanth Reddy are also scheduled to attend a meeting on water issues being facilitated by the Centre on Wednesday. The Telangana government is expected to press the Centre to grant approvals and funds for its long-pending projects. It had earlier conveyed its objection to the Centre regarding Andhra's Banakacherla river-linking project, saying that it hurts Telangana's interests.

A day after holding talks with Telangana over river water sharing, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday asserted that there is no need for a confrontation with the neighbouring State and advocated for `give and take' policy to resolve the issues. 'Both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana should prosper and develop. Andhra Pradesh will bear the cost of repairs to the Srisailam Project plunge pool. I have asked Telangana to utilise the Godavari river waters, if needed, and asked it to cooperate with inter-linking of rivers,' Mr. Naidu said, addressing a gathering of water users associations and farmers at Malyala in Nandikotkur mandal of Nandyal district. Earlier, Mr. Naidu offered Jala Harathi and released water from the Malyala pump house into the Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanthi canal which has been expanded within 100 days after commencing the works by the NDA government. Water to Rayalaseema Explaining his efforts to resolve water sharing issues, he said they have decided to establish the Godavari River Water Board in Hyderabad and the Krishna Board in Vijayawada. 'I want to provide water to every acre of land in Rayalaseema. Completion of the Vedavati project will provide water to Aluru, Adoni and Mantralayam Assembly Constituencies. We want to take water till Chittoor district. We will complete the Adivipalli reservoir and take water from Handri to Neeva branch canal,' he said. They will provide water to Chittoor next year, he added. 'The water that starts from the footsteps of Mallanna (Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna swamy temple at Srisailam) will be taken to Venkanna (Lord Venkateswara temple at Tirumala) at Tirupati. This is not just inter-linking of rivers but also Gods. We will prepare plans accordingly,' he said. Industrial development Mr. Naidu said the party general secretary and IT Minister Nara Lokesh had released the Rayalaseema Declaration during his Yuvagalam Padayatra and the same will be implemented. 'People of Rayalaseema have elected us with huge margins and we will never forget the promises made to the region. We will develop the region industrially. We will commence Drone City in Orvakal of Kurnool district. We will set up High Court bench in Kurnool and also complete the Rayalaseema Steel Plant in Kadapa,' Mr. Naidu said. Taking potshots at the previous government, the Chief Minister said earlier schools were run without teachers while they have started recruitment of 16,000 teachers through DSC soon after coming to power. ''Similarly, we have come to the rescue of the mango farmers by providing ₹4 per kg support price and also purchased tobacco from farmers,' he said and added that the government would deposit Annadata Sukhibava financial assistance to farmers in three instalments. Mr. Naidu reiterated that the promise of free bus ride to women would also be fulfilled and they would also extend financial assistance to the unemployed as promised. The Chief Minister recalled launching the Handri-Neeva project in 1995 at Uravakonda, a 554-km-long canal many once called impossible. He highlighted sanctioning ₹3,890 crore for canal expansion, completed in just 100 days. Mr. Naidu promised that within 10-15 days, water will reach the last villages and all reservoirs in drought-prone Rayalaseema will be filled.

PAC calls for Aadhaar review, flags high failure rate of biometric verification
Parliament's Public Accounts Committee has called for a review of the functioning of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), flagging several concerns, including the high rate of failure of Aadhaar biometric verification which can lead to many beneficiaries being excluded from social welfare schemes. At its meeting on Thursday (July 17, 2025), the committee, headed by senior Congress leader K.C. Venugopal, received a briefing from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) team which produced a 2021 report on the UIDAI. The panel also listened to oral evidence from officials of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and the UIDAI itself. 'This is a common man's issue. We flagged various problems and have raised several questions,' Mr. Venugopal told reporters at the conclusion of the meeting. Changing biometrics Across party lines, MPs on the committee pointed out that biometric verification failure is a serious issue since the majority of the government's social welfare schemes are tied directly to Aadhaar. This has led to many eligible beneficiaries being prevented from recieving food rations or jobs, under schemes such as the Public Distribution System or the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, because their biometric data no longer matches the UIDAI record. The UIDAI officials, according to sources, explained that in many cases of people doing hard labour, their fingerprints are not read properly by the machines. In the case of elderly people, there is often a failure in matching iris patterns. However, the officials also insisted that the UIDAI is constantly upgrading its systems to address these challenges. Data leaks and duplicates Sources said that several MPs also cited various reports to underline the dangers of data leaks. The UIDAI officials claimed that their central repository is unbreachable, and their investigations have shown that whatever leak has been reported has come from the enrolment centres. They added that UIDAI has strengthened the monitoring mechanism to plug all holes. Some estimates suggest that there are more Aadhaar cards currently in use than the total population of the country, indicating possible duplications as well as delays in deactivating the cards of the deceased. The UIDAI officials said that in the case of the deceased, it is dependent on voluntary deactivation. The PAC directed the UIDAI to act proactively to clean up the list of Aadhaar card holders.

India eyes massive energy infrastructure push over next decade
New Delhi: India is expected to see investments of ₹30–35 lakh crore across the hydrocarbons value chain between 2025 and 2035, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said at Urja Varta 2025. 'India has invested over ₹4 lakh crore in energy infrastructure over the past decade. These investments have not only strengthened national capacity but also created tangible value at the state level,' the Minister said, addressing an inter-ministerial round table with state representatives. He added, 'With an envisaged investment of ₹30–35 lakh crore over the next 10 years, the coming decade will be pivotal for energy infrastructure development across the country.' Puri highlighted that India contributed 16% to the global increase in oil demand over the last five years and is expected to account for nearly 25% of the incremental global energy demand through 2045. The round table saw participation from ministers and senior officials from 22 states and Union Territories and focused on enhancing Centre-State cooperation in facilitating energy projects.
