'They have created a reality in Gaza in which human beings cannot live. That is genocide. And that is what Israel is doing in Gaza.'

Gershon Baskin, the Middle East Director of the International Communities Organization, who is one of the acknowledged and highly regarded voices of conscience in Israel, says: 'If it hasn't become one as yet, Israel is definitely on the fast road to becoming a pariah state'. He says Israelis increasingly feel less welcome wherever they travel.
In a 25-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, to talk about his recent cri de coeur where he writes 'Israel is rapidly becoming a foreign land to me … a place that I will not want to call home, a place that I cannot call home', Baskin readily admitted and accepted that Israel is guilty of genocide.
'If you read the convention on genocide there's no question that what Israel is doing in Gaza is genocide. We're erasing a civilization. Ninety percent of the people in Gaza have no homes to go back to. They've been destroyed. Israel is now levelling half of Gaza. There are no schools, no universities, no public buildings, no libraries. Mosques are being erased. Churches were hit. Roads, infrastructure, water, electricity. They have created a reality in Gaza in which human beings cannot live. That is genocide. And that is what Israel is doing in Gaza.'

Israeli settlers attack West Bank Christian village

Israeli settlers attacked the Palestinian Christian village of Taybeh in the occupied West Bank overnight, torching cars and spray-painting threatening graffiti, a witness and the Palestinian Authority said Monday (July 28, 2025). Jeries Azar, a Taybeh resident and journalist for Palestine TV, told AFP his house and car were targeted in the pre-dawn assault. "I looked outside and saw my car on fire, and they were throwing something at the vehicle and in the direction of the house," Azar said. The Palestinian Authority issued a statement blaming "Israeli colonial settlers" for the attack on Taybeh. Azar said he was terrified and put himself in the shoes of the Dawabsheh family, a couple who burned to death with their baby after settlers attacked their West Bank village of Duma in 2015. "My greatest fear was for my two-year-old son. After we escaped, he cried nonstop for an hour", Azar said, adding that the Israeli army had surveyed the area after the attack. Israeli police and the military said in a joint statement that a unit was dispatched to Taybeh and reported "two burned Palestinian vehicles and graffiti". The statement said that no suspects were apprehended but that Israeli police have launched an investigation. A photo shared by a Palestinian government agency on social media showed graffiti on a Taybeh wall that read: "Al-Mughayyir, you will regret", referring to a nearby village that was also attacked by settlers earlier this year. The Palestinian Authority's foreign ministry condemned the attack, calling it "settler terrorism". Germany's ambassador to Israel, Steffen Seibert, also condemned the action, writing on X: "These extremist settlers may claim that God gave them the land. But they are nothing but criminals abhorrent to any faith". Taybeh and its surroundings have experienced several bouts of settler violence in recent months, including an arson attack at an ancient Byzantine church. The village -- home to about 1,300 mostly Christian Palestinians, many holding US dual citizenship -- is known for its brewery, the oldest in the Palestinian territories. Settlers have attacked neighbouring communities in recent months, resulting in three deaths, damage to Palestinian water wells and the displacement of at least one rural herding community. Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967. The territory is home to about three million Palestinians and around 700,000 Israeli settlers, including about 200,000 in east Jerusalem. Last week, 71 members of Israel's 120-seat parliament, or Knesset, passed a motion calling on the government to annex the West Bank.

Maharashtra Govt's New Guidelines Bar Staff From Criticising Policies On Social Media

Last Updated: Maharashtra government employees can't criticize policies and must keep separate social media accounts for work and personal use. Violations will lead to disciplinary action. Maharashtra government employees have been barred from criticising current or past policies of the state or any other government in the country, according to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI). The new social media guidelines, issued through a Government Resolution (GR) on Monday, apply to all state government employees, including those in local bodies, public sector undertakings and contract staff. As per the PTI report, the GR states that employees must maintain separate social media accounts for official and personal use. Personal accounts should not carry anything beyond the employee's photograph and are barred from using designations, government logos, images of uniforms, office buildings or official vehicles. The GR also prohibits employees from using mobile applications banned by either the state or the Centre. Violations will invite disciplinary action under the Maharashtra Civil Service Conduct Rules, 1979. While officers are allowed to highlight good work done by them, they have been advised to avoid self-praise. Employees are expected to use social media responsibly and refrain from downloading or circulating content that is objectionable, defamatory, discriminatory, or likely to incite hatred. No confidential files or documents may be uploaded, forwarded or shared, even partially, without official permission, the PTI report said. Employees have also been directed to hand over official social media accounts to their successors upon retirement or transfer. The government has allowed the use of messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram for work-related coordination. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
