Illegal alcohol destroyed in Sedibeng District
The initiative was attended by police officers from the Sedibeng District, Evaton, Meyerton, Ratanda, Sebokeng, Sharpeville, Vereeniging as well as, the office of the premier, MMC of Safety and Security, Liquor Board, Gauteng Traffic, Emfuleni by-laws, Midvaal, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, and Community Policing Forum.
The acting District Commissioner, Brigadier Mbangwa Nkhwashu, led the demonstration of the liquor disposal process, highlighting the collaborative efforts of various police stations throughout the district. Brigadier Nkwashu stated that over 200 000 litres of alcohol had been destroyed during this phase, all of which was seized from individuals and businesses operating without valid liquor licenses.
'Through the dedication of the members, Sedibeng District will continue to curb crime by building strong relationships between police and communities. Their active participation enables them to tap into a collective wisdom and creativity, leading to more effective solutions to local challenges.'
Nkhwashu further emphasised that the disposal event forms part of SAPS' ongoing efforts, in partnership with local stakeholders, to ensure compliance with liquor regulations and promote public safety in the Sedibeng District.

Gold worth R1m discovered in eMalahleni
SAPS arrested two people last night when gold-bearing material weighing 74kg was discovered. Police intercepted the vehicle just after 18:00 at the Puma Garage. A 35-year-old man from Zimbabwe and a 19-year-old South African woman were arrested. The pair allegedly attempted to bribe the police with R15 000. In addition to being charged with possession of suspected stolen property, the suspects also now face a charge of bribery. Both are expected to appear in the Witbank Magistrate's Court on Monday. The meeting was spearheaded by KwaZulu-Natal NCOP whip Mzamo Billy and is part of a larger stakeholder engagement programme. Billy will be accompanied by a provincial delegation. This initiative aims to strengthen cooperative governance and bring provincial issues to the attention of Parliament. 'The NCOP has a constitutional duty to listen and to act to ensure that national legislation and resources respond directly to the needs of provinces,' said Billy. Billy highlighted the SAPS as a crucial partner, particularly in a province like KZN, which grapples with significant crime and safety issues. "The engagement also seeks to build a stronger link between legislative oversight and operational policing realities in the province," said the NCOP. The SAPS recently released fourth quarter crime statistics for the 2024/2025 financial year (January 2025 to March 2025), which revealed over the three-month period, there were 5 727 murders in the country. Of the total murders, 1,193 were reported in KwaZulu-Natal.
