Pilot project uses steel slag for road repairs

Vijayawada: In a pioneering step toward converting industrial waste into infrastructure assets, the Andhra Pradesh government has launched a pilot project using advanced steel slag technology for road construction.
BC Janardhan Reddy, special chief secretary for roads and buildings, investments, and infrastructure, inaugurated the experimental road repair work in Mandadam village near the secretariat on Monday.
Reddy said that they have taken up the experiment following the instructions from chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu. He said that such innovative methods are being adopted and implemented on an experimental basis to provide better roads and quality standards.
The official further said that it was part of chief minister's vision of creating "wealth from waste." He explained that that experts were monitoring the effectiveness of the "Ecofix" mixture, made from steel slag and tar, for repairing potholes during the rainy season. He said that road repairs and development initiatives will be undertaken in the future based on the findings of the pilot project.

710 cops on roads will keep Ghaziabad on the move, help unclog borders
Ghaziabad: Traffic police have announced a restructuring of their operations to tackle bottlenecks, particularly at the city's border. The new traffic plan, rolled out Monday, divides the city into three zones and nine sub-zones to streamline oversight and improve response times. Each of the three new traffic zones will be overseen by an assistant commissioner of police, up from a single ACP previously. It also increases traffic personnel deployed on road from 565 to 710, with the number of traffic inspectors increased from six to nine, and sub-inspectors from 86 to 135. Until now, the city had six sub-zones, each under an inspector. "Given Ghaziabad's strategic location, the city requires a traffic system capable of handling intense movement throughout the day," additional commissioner of police (law and order) Alok Priyadarshi said. Ghaziabad police commissionerate is also divided into three zones – city, trans-Hindon and rural – each headed by a DCP. Duty points have also gone up from 181 to 216. Hi-tech cameras are to be installed at 41 more junctions, including Hapur Tri-junction to Mohan Nagar, Mohan Nagar to Seemapuri border, Tulsi Niketan to Nag Dwar, Elevated Road to Hapur Chungi, ALT to Meerut trisection, Hapur Chungi to Atma Ram Steels, Old Bus-Stand to Ambedkar Road, and Hapur Tri-junction to Lal Kuan. A centralised command centre is also in the works. Additional lighting and rumble strips will also be added where needed, police said. Emergency preparedness is also being enhanced, with a citywide database of trauma centres, hospitals and ambulance services set to be made available at the police control room. Neighbouring Noida has already implemented a similar model, with three ACPs deployed in order to manage traffic in different zones and a 500-strong force stationed at nearly 200 locations across the city.
