Epic Games is set to resume operations after their summer hiatus on Monday, 14th July. This has been confirmed by an Epic Games employee via the Unreal Engine forums, who also assured that any queries submitted through their online forms will be attended to upon their return. The subsequent Fortnite update following this comeback is anticipated for Tuesday, 15th July, as hinted by Fortnite insider @iFireMonkey. The specifics of the update remain under wraps, but it's certain that it will address some bug fixes that have been lingering on the Fortnite community Trello board. Regardless, it's a welcome development for players that the game's team is back at work, crafting new content for their enjoyment. Between YouTube vloggers focusing on the most run-down areas and sneering articles from London-based newspapers, this close-knit and diverse community has been in the crossfire it seems. I have seen first-hand some of the problems that exist in this area of the city from my work with the police, the Gwent Drug and Alcohol service and numerous visits to businesses and projects since my election in 2021. Yes, there are issues, and I would like to see them addressed as swiftly as possible in a compassionate and generous manner. Poverty is a major root cause of many of the problems we face in society, which is why Plaid Cymru will make tackling it a major priority if the people choose us to form the next government of Wales. But I also recognise there are a lot of positives to be found in Pill. The thing that people producing 'hit' pieces of this ilk tend to ignore is the community spirit, diversity and vibrancy found in this community. I find myself in Pill Mill regularly for meetings and events. I have also canvassed and leafletted the streets a fair bit, and what I tend to find is that people are, without exception, friendly and welcoming. This was something I found earlier this week when I met the people involved with The Open Pantry and The Open Kitchen project at its launch which has been set up to tackle poverty across the city. The initiative is being guided by Pill local Tariq Khan who, whilst acknowledging the problems that exist in this part of the city, chooses to focus on the positive. His approach - characterised by collaboration, friendliness and clarity of purpose - was the perfect antidote to the negativity of some. I have no doubt that Tariq and his team of staff and volunteers will have a positive impact on addressing poverty and inequality for the most vulnerable in society. The aim is to get to a situation whereby projects like these are not needed because poverty has been addressed and no child is going hungry. Until we get there, it is heartwarming that there are people like Tariq and his team who go about their work with compassion, providing dignity to the vulnerable people they serve. In the end, that matters much more to the community than what someone in London looking down their nose thinks and writes. Peredur Owen Griffiths is member of the Senedd for South Wales East.
