Joanna Lumley ‘wouldn't mind' assisted dying if she got to a ‘miserable' state

The 79-year-old said she supported the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which was backed by MPs in the Commons last month, that would allow terminally ill adults with fewer than six months to live to apply for an assisted death.
Asked about the Bill in an interview with Saga Magazine, Dame Joanna said: 'People are terribly anxious about it and think one may be coerced (into voluntary euthanasia).
'But I'm saying this now when nobody's coercing me, don't let me turn into somebody who doesn't recognise the people I love most, where I'm having a miserable time.
'When I get to the stage where I can't speak and have to be fed, that won't be me any more and that's when I wouldn't mind saying farewell.'
The Bill would see those wishing to go through assisted dying require approval by two doctors and a panel featuring a social worker, senior legal figure and psychiatrist. It will next come before the House of Lords for further debate and votes.
One of the Bill's most high-profile backers has been TV presenter Dame Esther Rantzen, 85, who has terminal cancer, and recently urged members of the House of Lords not to block the legislation.
Dame Joanna is best known for her roles as Patsy Stone in the BBC sitcom Absolutely Fabulous, Sapphire in ITV supernatural series Sapphire And Steel, and in The New Avengers, the 1970s revamped version of 1960s ITV spy series The Avengers.
She will appear in season two of Netflix supernatural series Wednesday as Grandmama in August.

ITV Coronation Street fans rumble 'fake death' as they say one character will make shock return

Coronation Street viewers are convinced that one character who is meant to have been dead for years will soon make a shock return to Weatherfield. Coronation Street may soon be seeing one character return from the dead with fans claiming to have spotted some solid clues in the ITV soap. The character in question was thought to have been killed off screen years before but viewers only learned of their existence in the past year or so. ‌ Becky Swain was the mother of teen Betsy Swain, and the wife of detective Lisa Swain. Lisa has opened up about the loss of her spouse in the line of duty a couple of times and was also recently forced to face her sad past when she spoke about it in therapy. ‌ Becky's alleged death was revisited more than once in recent times with newcomers Matty and Logan Radcliffe's link to the death being revealed earlier this year. Details about what caused Becky's death and rumours of her being corrupt ahead of her murder, have kept the plot and the mystery surrounding her demise going. ‌ Fans who picked up on the constant mentions of her and the desire to know what really happened have now suggested there's more to be revealed when it comes to Becky's story, the Mirror reports. Amid some fresh spoilers that tease a twist about Lisa's new partner Carla Connor, fans are wondering if a huge bombshell will be dropped in the soap soon. ‌ While fans are waiting in anticipation to find out if Becky is actually dead while others are calling for the speculation that she is still alive to end, others can't shake the idea that she may be in hiding. The theory has been doing the round following new episodes and twists with fans now once again convinced that Becky will soon head to Weatherfield very much alive. ‌ Taking to social media one fan suggested: "What if Carla really does do a deep dive and finds out Becky is not only bent but also alive? What if those scenes at the park are her having to break the news to Lisa alongside the Private investigator?" Another fan echoed: "Feels like a juggernaut coming down the line but I could be wrong. Is Becky - deceased wife of DC Swain and mother of Betsy - not dead? "My very much of a guess is - she was undercover as a bent copper, big scary criminals, faked death to save her family, witness protection, yadda yadda yadda and suddenly TA-DA!!! ‌ "It's all the endless references and musings about a character we've never met. Feels like something's afoot. Also a handy nemesis for Carla? That's always a good thing." A third agreed with the theories, saying: "I agree that the endless references about someone who we have never met is suspicious!" Another torn fan then posted: "The only reason I think she has to be dead is surely a post mortem was carried out given the circumstances and surely Lisa had to identify her or saw her in her coffin." ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Someone else, who did not seem as impressed by the rumoured storyline, wrote: "Typical soap, if they don't die on screen, they're not actually dead." The theory kept on being shared, with somebody adding: "Yeah, I don't recall exactly what it was, but before the footy break a Swarla convo made me say Becky isn't dead." Yet another viewer chimed in: "Wouldn't surprise me if Becky's still alive."

Joanna Lumley recalls tearful moment she received mystery letter from Buckingham Palace

The actress and campaigner was named a Dame in the New Year's Honours in 2022, the last list to be issued by the late Queen Elizabeth II before her death in September of that year. Joanna Lumley, a devoted royalist and tireless charity supporter, was over the moon when she was appointed an OBE in the 1995 New Year Honours List. However, when an "official-looking" letter arrived at Joanna 's doorstep seven years later, she was somewhat apprehensive. ‌ The Absolutely Fabulous actress confessed to Saga Magazine: "My heart sank because I thought it would say I'd been parking on the wrong side of the street. Then I opened it and was completely overwhelmed. I blubbed." ‌ She revealed that the letter, from Buckingham Palace, informed her she was to be made a Dame. ‌ Joanna added: "I was terribly moved. I don't think you should be rewarded for charity stuff - you do it because you love to help - but it was a big deal." ‌ Joanna remembers that the 2022 awards were the final New Year's Honours bestowed by the late Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen passed away nine months later in September 2022 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, after celebrating her Platinum Jubilee marking her record-breaking 70-year reign. Joanna remarked: "She left so gracefully, remaining upright and swearing in Liz Truss as Prime Minister until the very last minute. We never saw her use a wheelchair, even though she was very frail. She was compos mentis, then she went to her bed and died." ‌ Joanna has penned a book titled 'A Queen for All Seasons: A Celebration of Our One and Only Queen Elizabeth II on Her Platinum Jubilee', which compiles anecdotes from individuals who had the privilege of meeting the late monarch during her long reign. In conversation with Jonathan Ross, she revealed that these stories were gathered "from all kinds of people from very grand statesmen people like Ban Ki-moon and Khrushchev and Winston Churchill, right down to little kids who saw her passing by in the street and were allowed to go and give their flowers." ‌ She highlighted one particular tale from Rob Halford, the lead vocalist of rock band Judas Priest: "He went to Buckingham Palace and heard the queen say 'heavy metal.' He said 'I never believed i'd hear The Queen say the words heavy metal.'" Speaking to Saga, Joanna also expressed her immense admiration for the King: "He was the most brilliant Prince of Wales we will ever see," she stated. Noting that the King held the title of Prince Of Wales for over 64 years, she emphasised that his cancer diagnosis hasn't hindered him from fulfilling his Royal duties: "He's exceptionally brave, because he really is ill, but practically nobody can keep up with him. "He packs so much into every day, he walks faster than anybody I've ever met - he's incredible." Joanna noted that during his time as Prince Of Wales, he experienced "a dark, dark time" when the media sided with Princess Diana against him: "So much mud was flung at the new Queen when she was Camilla Parker Bowles, but now she just goes about her job without any rancour. She's a golden, fabulous person."

ITV Loose Women chaos as co-stars clash over 'cheating' confession

Brenda Edwards opened up on the unexpected way she met her ex husband on Monday's Loose Women as one outspoken ITV co-star disagreed with her Loose Women stars Janet Street-Porter and Brenda Edwards clashed in today's episode of the ITV panel show. The pair, who were appearing alongside Charlene White and Katie Piper on Monday's instalment, had a disagreement over the recent Coldplay Kiss cam cheating scandal. ‌ After footage of Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and HR chief Kristin Cabot went viral last week when they were spotted embracing in the crowd of the band's Boston gig and later, Byron resigned. ‌ Today, Brenda said that she believed he was 'right to step down' after the firm released a statement saying that 'standards had not been met' by his actions, while Janet argued that his personal life and the alleged affair with a colleague shouldn't have affected his ability to run a company. ‌ Brenda, who admitted that she met her ex-husband through work, said that it was Byron's own fault that the alleged affair was exposed because the pair were in a public space. She said: 'They were listening to Coldplay music and swaying, and both of them ducked. Why do ducking?" ‌ Katie chimed in, adding that there should have been more thought by the pair as children are involved, prompting Brenda to reply that they should have considered the kids earlier. Janet, 78, stepped in to argue that she'd seen countless affairs going on in the offices of most of the newspaper offices she worked in, claiming most of the men in charge were involved with colleagues, however she reused to name names, only to state that it goes on 'all the time' in workplaces. The former newspaper editor, who has been married four times, has spoken out previously about her own infidelity. ‌ She said on Monday: 'I find it extraordinary that companies have a moral code, because I don't actually care'. She then went on to highlight the fact the furore around the alleged affair has only meant that Astronomer's profile has been boosted. ‌ Janet added: "As someone who has had affairs, I would not be that judgemental. To me, I think it could be entirely innocent.' Brenda, fuming at Janet's words, erupted: "Innocent?!' ‌ She then started to shout over Janet and made it clear she disaproved, reports the Mirror. Host Charlene stepped in to end the debate before things got even more heated and brought the topic to a close. She touched on a recent Loose Women poll which found 83 per cent of viewers had no sympathy for the pair, as Brenda added she felt sorry for the wife of the CEO. Janet also referenced former Health Secretary Matt Hancock's extramarital affair with aide Gina Coladangelo. But it was Brenda's behaviour on the show that caught the attention of viewers. One took to X, formerly Twitter. To say: "Calm the f*** down, Brenda! And what about the woman involved, hmm? Proper aggressive behaviour on display.' Another said: "Brenda needs anger management therapy.' One ITV viewer added: "Being serious now, I really think Brenda needs some help, she is on the edge and really stressed, not normal behaviour. And another pleaded: 'Would someone please tell Brenda to stop shouting? She seems aggrieved about every single thing!" Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
