Portrait of last Battle of Britain pilot handed over at National Museum

Group Captain Hemingway, originally from Dublin, was the final surviving member of 'The Few', who took to the skies in 1940 to defend the UK against Luftwaffe attacks in what became a pivotal moment of the Second World War.
He died in March this year, at the age of 105.
His portrait will find a permanent home at Collins Barracks in the Irish capital.
The portrait, unveiled by Mr Hemingway at the British Embassy in Dublin last year marking his 105th birthday, was painted by Welsh artist Dan Llywelyn Hall, 44.
He was the last living pilot from the Battle of Britain and would have been 106 on July 17.
Mr Llywelyn Hall is known for numerous portraits, such as the Queen, Shane MacGowan, Amy Winehouse and other public figures.
Mr Llywelyn Hall said: 'I am pleased for the portrait of the Last of the Few, John Hemingway, to be a legacy for the public in John's native Ireland.
'It's especially meaningful this portrait will live in Dublin as it was John's home and held in great affection.
'This portrait serves as both a record of remarkable life and a testament to the rich personality beyond the uniform.'
He added: 'I sat with John in 2024 in his nursing home and we chatted a lot.
'I was endlessly drawing in the process, taking photographs, videoing and gathering as much information as I could.
'I couldn't epitomise his whole life in one canvas so I broke it down into a series of five, depicting different facets of his character and his life.
'For this one, it seemed appropriate that the National Museum chose this to represent his life.
'I am delighted it has ended up in a public collection.
'It can be looked at and kept under a watchful eye and be amongst other artefacts and objects and things which relate to his life.'
Brenda Malone, curator of Irish Military History, said: 'We are delighted to accept this generous gift from Dan, and are particularly happy to record John Hemingway's story, through his portrait, with us.
'The National Museum collects and preserves the history of Irishmen and women's experience of military service around the world, especially in times of conflict.
'John's story stands as a representation for the many Irish people who served in the Royal Air Force during WWII.
'His portrait and history will form a valuable part of our collections which we hold in trust for the Irish people.'
In 1940, Group Capt Hemingway was recorded as destroying a German airliner and the following day he downed a German Luftwaffe plane, but his Hurricane fighter was hit by anti-aircraft fire and he had to make a forced landing.
He then became one of the frontline members of 11 Group's response to daily attacks by German aircraft, which went on to be known as the Battle of Britain.
In August 1940, during hectic dogfights, he was twice forced to bail out of his Hurricanes, landing once in the sea off the Essex coast and in marshland on the other occasion.
In 1941 he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) and in September of that year he was mentioned in despatches by senior officers.

William and Kate to join King and Queen for Macron's Windsor carriage ride

Kate, who has opened up about her 'rollercoaster' cancer recovery, its life-changing impact and putting on a 'brave face', will carry out royal duties as part of the French leader's state visit on Tuesday. Kensington Palace has yet to confirm whether or not the princess will attend the banquet in Windsor Castle's St George's Hall in the evening. The King and Queen are hosting French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte next week (Daniel Leal/PA) The princess, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2024 and confirmed she was free from the disease at the start of this year, last made an appearance at a grand royal dinner 20 months ago in November 2023 in honour of the South Korean president. Mr Macron's state visit to the UK, from July 8-10, is the first to be hosted at Windsor Castle, rather than Buckingham Palace, in a more than a decade since that of the Irish president Michael D Higgins in 2014. In a personal touch, the King and Queen will, on Wednesday, take the Macrons to see Fabuleu de Maucour, a 10-year-old grey gelding which Mr Macron gifted to known horse-lover the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2022 in celebration of her Platinum Jubilee. Fabuleu de Maucour belonged to the largely ceremonial French Republican Guard and was trained to carry the standard-bearer. Fabuleu de Maucour, the horse gifted by @EmmanuelMacron to HM The Queen in 2022 for her Platinum Jubilee, was today present at the Brigade Major's Review. Riding Fabuleu was Master of the Horse, Lord De Mauley. And the Macrons will privately pay their respects at the late Queen's tomb in St George's Chapel by laying flowers in tribute. Charles, Ranger of Windsor Great Park, will also invite the president to tour the Windsor Castle Gardens, including areas of nature restoration and biodiversity and the wider Great Park. State visits, which capitalise on the royals' soft power to strengthen diplomatic ties overseas, have moved from Buckingham Palace to Windsor for the next few years while reservicing work continues at the London royal residence and starts to affect the state rooms. The King with President of France Emmanuel Macron during the European Political Community summit at Blenheim Palace in Woodstock in July 2024 (Hollie Adams/PA) The arrangements are likely to form the template for US president Donald Trump's high-profile state visit in September, but much will depend on security considerations for the US leader, who survived an assassination attempt last year. William and Kate will meet Mr and Mrs Macron at RAF Northolt on Tuesday morning on behalf of the King and travel with them to Windsor. Charles and Camilla will formerly greet their guests on a Royal Dais constructed on Datchet Road in Windsor town centre, with the castle in the backdrop as gun salutes sound in nearby Home Park. The King, the Queen, the Waleses and Mr and Mrs Macron will then take a carriage procession through the Berkshire town and along part of the Long Walk which leads to the castle, just like President Sarkozy did. French President Nicolas Sarkozy rides in a carriage with Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle in 2008 (Darren Staples/PA) A ceremonial welcome will be staged in the castle's quadrangle with Camilla, William, Kate and Mrs Macron watching as the King and Mr Macron inspect the Guard of Honour. Lunch will be hosted in the State Dining Room, after which the president and his wife, the King and Queen and members of the royal family will view a special exhibition of items relating to France from the Royal Collection in the Green Drawing Room. Mr and Mrs Macron will also travel to London on Tuesday afternoon to see the Grave of the Unknown Warrior at Westminster Abbey, visit the Palace of Westminster where the French leader will address parliamentarians in the Royal Gallery, and meet opposition leaders at Lancaster House. The King and president will both deliver speeches at the banquet on Tuesday evening. Queen Elizabeth II toasts after her speech during a state banquet in honour of the President of Ireland Michael D Higgins at Windsor Castle in 2014 (Dan Kitwood/PA) Wednesday will see the president and Mrs Macron join Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Lady Starmer for lunch at Downing Street, ahead of a UK-France summit at Number 10 on Thursday. The King and Queen paid a state visit to France in September 2023 and enjoy a warm rapport with Mr and Mrs Macron, who will stay in the castle during their trip. The last state visit to the UK from France was in March 2008 when the now-disgraced president Nicolas Sarkozy, since convicted of corruption and influence peddling, and his wife Carla Bruni, were the guests of Elizabeth II at Windsor. The Princess of Wales planting a rose during a visit to the RHS's Wellbeing Garden at Colchester Hospital this week (Stefan Rousseau/PA) The King, who is still being treated for cancer, has had a busy recent run of engagements, carrying out a host of visits in Scotland for Royal Week. Kate, who spoke about the challenges of her recovery during a visit to the RHS's Wellbeing Garden at Colchester Hospital on Wednesday, took part in the Qatari state visit last December, accompanying the Emir to Horse Guards Parade with William, attending the ceremonial welcome, the lunch and the Picture Gallery exhibition.

'I went to Benidorm and was floored after noticing detail about bar'

A woman who went to Benidorm decided to test out its nightlife with her mum and sisters, and said she had the 'best time' at a legendary club after noticing one detail A woman was so taken aback by the bustling nightlife of Benidorm during a family trip that she took to social media to share her surprise afterwards. Ebony Crawford posted a TikTok video from her night out at the Spanish city's Insomnia nightclub, expressing her astonishment at how crowded the club was - even at 5am. "The best time in Benidorm, 5am in Insomnia," she captioned her post, highlighting the vibrant party scene. The footage showed the venue brimming with partygoers dancing to the latest hits. Ebony continued to share her Spanish escapade in Alicante with another video, where she reiterated she'd had the "best time ever" with her mum and sisters. ‌ ‌ Ebony also treated followers to a tour of the Hotel Gold Arcos - where she was staying - including its culinary offerings, which included classic British fare alongside traditional continental dishes. She also shared a peek at her room, boasting a breath-taking view of the sea and nearby tourist attractions. One TikTok user reminisced about their stay at the same hotel: "Amazing hotel, stayed there last October," Another concurred, commenting: "Its such a beautiful hotel isnt it Ebs." In a much more cautionary tale, another Brit holidaying in Benidorm - known as @harrytokky on TikTok - warned fellow travellers about potential "fake taxis" in the area. Harry said these could be "random strangers' cars" and by getting into them, you run the risk of not reaching your desired destination safely. In his video, he said that "in Benidorm there's only one type of taxi that you should be getting into," and they are "white cars with a blue stripe down the middle". He assured that these are the taxis that will "take you to your destination nice and safe," in contrast to the "fake" ones. ‌ Harry advised: "So guys, if you're coming out to Benidorm, they are the only taxis that you should be looking out for, because you don't want to get into some random stranger's car." Elsewhere, holidaying Brits have also been warned about a new "scam" said to be sweeping the region. Businessman Frank the Stag Man, who moved to the Mediterranean coast 13 years ago, said fraudsters have a new trick that you "probably won't be aware of." In a video recorded on the streets of Benidorm, Frank pointed out a number of people holding clipboards approaching passers-by. After turning down the opportunity to fill out a "petition" himself, he explained: "As you've seen there, this is one of the scams that runs along the beachfront." But how does it work? Frank claimed that holidaymakers are asked to sign petitions which, once completed, allow scammers to push their victim into making a donation. His partner interjected, stating: "They'll say it's for the blind or the disabled and that they are petitioning to get something sorted here in Spain." However, she slammed: "It's full of a load of rubbish and illegal to do this here in Spain." Frank added: "They're illegal, scamming, and they will take your money. Some people even get their wallets out and give them a few quid."

Killer cut of victim's penis and ate it with him after horror agreement

Armin Meiwes, 42, made a chilling agreement with Bernd Brandes who agreed to be killed and eaten by the killer. What ensued was an act so gruesome it sent shockwaves around the world In a terrifying twist of fate, a killer engaged in an act of cannibalism, devouring his consenting victim over a period of 10 months following a sinister pact between the two. Armin Meiwes infamously dined on Bernd Brandes, who had agreed to be eaten, for almost a full year. ‌ Meiwes advertised for a victim with an unsettling post titled 'Dinner - or your dinner' on a German online forum, seeking someone amenable to being consumed. ‌ Bernd, a 43 year old engineer, responded to the advert in 2001, leading to him visiting Meiwes, then aged 42, at his Rotenburg residence in the south of Germany. There, Meiwes gave Bernd a potent mix of sleeping pills and schnapps to relax him before cutting off his penis, which they both consumed together. As reported in the Mirror, Bernd's ordeal continued as another grim serving of his back flesh was prepared. In a documentary named Docs: Interview With a Cannibal, Meiwes said: "I took out my best dinner service, and fried a piece of rump steak – a piece from his back – made what I call princess potatoes, and sprouts.", reports the Mirror US. Meiwes likened his initial experience of human meat to something beyond words, explaining: "The first bite was, of course, very strange. It was a feeling I can't really describe. I'd spent over 40 years longing for it, dreaming about it." He added: "And now I was getting the feeling that I was actually achieving this perfect inner connection through his flesh. The flesh tastes like pork but stronger." In a morbid ritual, Meiwes meticulously readied his dining table with candles and took part in the forbidden feast he had been "longing" for throughout his life. After the sickening meal, Bernd, who was still conscious, settled into a bath while Meiwes narrated from a Star Trek book until he ultimately committed the final gruesome deed by stabbing Bernd in the neck, causing his demise. ‌ Chillingly, Meiwes dismembered his deceased victim, burying body parts in his garden and stowing some of the meat in his freezer for future consumption over ten months. Law enforcement finally caught up with Meiwes in December 2002, where he tried to mislead them, claiming the flesh found in his freezer came from a wild pig. The former computer repair specialist nurtured a dark obsession to eat another human, a twisted dream birthed during his adolescent years. During the trial, he maintained that the engineer "came to me of his own free will to end his life. For him, it was a nice death." ‌ Investigations later revealed that the deceased man carried what some might consider an odd wish to be mutilated and seemed to give his consent to Meiwes' sinister yearning as a form of exchange, fearing insanity if he chose to go on living. Over a month, the duo exchanged messages daily, meticulously crafting their grim agreement. This led to Bernd selling his car, wiping his computer's data, and leaving his possessions to his partner through a written note on the eve of his departure. In January 2004, Meiwes was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to eight years and six months in prison. However, following a retrial in May 2006, he was convicted of murder and given a life sentence. He remains behind bars at the age of 63. In April 2023, an arson attack destroyed Meiwes' former residence, which was also the scene of the horrific act.
