Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya warns of protests in metro stations if Yellow Line not opened by August

Deccan Herald3 days ago
Bengaluru: Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya on Saturday led an agitation against repeated delays in opening of the Yellow Line Metro in the city. The BJP leader said that there would be protests in metro stations if BMRCL breaks its August deadline for the operationalisation of the line again.Reacting to calls by citizens and public representatives on the early opening of Namma Metro's Yellow Line, the BMRCL stated that the RV Road-Bommasandra metro line would 'hopefully' be thrown open in mid-August. Surya, in response, denounced the BMRCL for breaking its own deadlines over 10 times on the Yellow Line and warned of protests in the metro stations along the route by the public if this final commitment by the metro organisation is broken again..Namma Metro's daily ridership will rise from 8.5 lakh to 14 lakh, says BMRCL chief .'Bengaluru's traffic crisis can be resolved only if private vehicles on the road reduce and ridership in public transport increases,' Surya said, addressing a crowd outside Lalbagh. 'Due to the delay in the opening of the Yellow Line, commuters are stuck in traffic jams at Silk Board and other junctions. The BMRCL has been breaking its own deadlines several times. If this commitment to open the line in August is also broken, then people will have no option but to protest outside each of the Yellow Line's unopened metro stations.'On Saturday, a delegation of citizens, led by Surya, Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan, MLAs M Krishnappa (Bengaluru South), Ravi Subramanya (Basavanagudi), Uday Garudachar (Chickpet), CK Ramamurthy (Jayanagar), MLC Gopinath Reddy and BJP Bengaluru South organisational district, staged a protest at Lalbagh Main Gate. The delegation submitted a memorandum to the BMRCL MD at the venue. In their memorandum, they criticized the BMRCL for causing severe inconvenience to Bengalureans in their daily commute due to the ongoing delays in the opening of the Yellow Line. The Yellow Line spans from RV Road to Bommasandra, covering 16 stations over a distance of 19.15 km. Once operational, the line is expected to serve 2.5 lakh passengers daily, significantly easing congestion in critical areas like Electronic City and Silk Board. It was initially slated to open in 2021, but multiple delays over the years have created uncertainty regarding its opening and operationalisation.. First scheduled for 2021, the launch was pushed to late 2023, then postponed to just before the 2024 General Elections. Following that, a new deadline of January 2025 was announced, which has now been extended to July 2025. Even now, BMRCL officials are only hopeful of having the line operational by August 2025..Bengaluru's Yellow Line to get first fully India-made train in early Aug, two a month from Sept.Surya has been at the forefront in pushing for the completion of the line's civil works. He also addressed several roadblocks during this period. Through multiple stakeholder meetings and ministerial interventions, Surya enabled the early supply of car bodies for the metro train and also obtained the necessary visa clearances for the Chinese engineers working on the metro rakes. He also coordinated a dedicated line in Titagarh for manufacturing trains for BMRCL. Surya also coordinated between CRRC and software provider Melco to deliver the beta version of TCMS (Train Control Management Software) by January 2024, ahead of its earlier June 2024 timeline.Similarly, PC Mohan and other BJP MLAs from Bengaluru have been consistently following up and pressing for the early commissioning of the line.

BRS to start rail blockade if BJP, Congress continue to delay implementation of Telangana OBC quota Bill: Kavitha

Blaming the Congress and the BJP for their delay in implementing a Bill passed by the Telangana Assembly to grant 42% reservation for other backward classes (OBCs), Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) leader K. Kavitha said on Tuesday (July 8, 2025) that her party will launch a rail blockade agitation on July 17 if a government order to implement the law is not issued in the next State Cabinet meeting. She asked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to direct Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to issue the order using the provisions of the Constitution. Ms. Kavitha also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to act so that the legislation, which is at present awaiting approval from President Droupadi Murmu, can be notified soon. 'If the Backward Classes Bill is not approved, not a single train wheel will be allowed to move forward from Telangana,' she said. 'Deceiving the backward classes' Ms. Kavitha accused both the Congress, in power at the State, and the BJP-ruled Central government of deceiving the backward classes (BCs). 'Opposition to BCs is ingrained in BJP's DNA. If the BC Bill is not approved, 2.5 crore BC children in Telangana will teach BJP a lesson,' she said. Talking to reporters in the national capital on Tuesday, the BRS leader said that she would write to all political parties seeking their support for the implementation of BC reservations. She said the State government is trying to wash its hands of the matter after sending the Bill to the President. 'Why isn't Rahul Gandhi making a phone call to Revanth Reddy to issue the Government Order? If he truly supports the Constitution, he should ensure that the Revanth government enforces the 42% reservation through a Government Order,' she said.

Maharashtra language war: Is it with an eye on Mumbai municipal polls? Experts debate

The language controversy in Maharashtra has escalated, with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers protesting and allegedly assaulting non-Marathi speakers in Mumbai suburbs. This comes ahead of crucial municipal elections, raising questions about whether this is a genuine fight for Marathi pride or a political strategy. The Thackeray cousins, Uddhav and Raj, have united on this issue, while the BJP denies accusations of imposing Hindi. The Congress and NCP have taken a cautious approach so far. Critics argue this may be more about control of the BMC's large budget than language issues. The controversy has sparked debates about cultural identity, language policy, and political opportunism in Maharashtra. The issue of Marathi language and identity has resurfaced in Maharashtra politics, with opposition parties uniting against a government order on Hindi language education. Shiv Sena UBT leader stated the party's commitment to promoting Marathi while respecting other languages. The NCP accused the government of failing to address public concerns and provide concrete solutions for Marathi language promotion. BJP faces criticism over comments by MP Nishikant Dubey. The debate has reignited discussions on Marathi pride ahead of BMC elections, with speculation about potential alliances between Uddhav and Raj Thackeray. The issue highlights ongoing tensions between regional identity and centralized education policies.

‘Neither central nor state forces allowed in assembly'

1 2 Kolkata: The advocate general, in his submission to Calcutta High Court, on Tuesday denied BJP 's allegation of discrimination between central and state forces on the Bengal assembly precincts. AG Kishore Datta pleaded that neither central nor state forces were allowed as security to MLAs. "However, there are some policemen deployed in the House, without arms, on the directions of the high court," Datta said. He submitted that all other security personnel were made to wait in shelters. "The prayer made by the leader of opposition (Suvendu Adhikari) to allow central forces within the assembly precincts/House would result in an order of reverse discrimination," the AG said. The AG urged the court of Justice Amrita Sinha to consider whether a direction to the legislature presided over by the speaker, who enjoys certain privileges and immunity under Articles 178, 194, 208, 212 and Entry 13 of the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution, was preferable and how far the functions of the legislature could be brought under the purview of judicial review. Senior counsel for Adhikari, Billwadal Bhattacharya, held that the point of the matter was whether constitutional provisions could be suspended by issuing an administrative letter from the speaker's office. Justice Sinha adjourned the hearing till July 21.
