A young cat has captured hearts around the world after a bittersweet moment from her first birthing experience went viral online.
Leo Ching Ling, 24, who documents life with her cat on TikTok under the handle @lifewithmolumolu, shared the emotional journey of her 1-year-old cat, Momo, who gave birth to four kittens on June 15. The video garnered more than 18,000 likes and over 187,000 views on Instagram.
Ling said the pregnancy came as a shock. "It came as a surprise; we thought she would be due end of the week, but she suddenly found a random box and gave birth," she told Newsweek. Although they had prepared a cozy nest for Momo, she chose her own place to deliver.
Ling wasn't home to witness the birth, but said that the labor began at around 6 p.m.

"It seems like her first three kittens were a smooth and quick labor, around three hours, and all of them are out and drinking milk already," Ling said.
Momo's transition into motherhood was filled with learning moments. "I think at first she was quite confused about how to feed the kittens milk, as she was always in an awkward position, like half-sitting down, so the kittens can drink from the front, but we tried adjusting her a bit so she could lie down comfortably to feed, and she got that quickly. By now, I think she's doing pretty well," Ling said.
Tragically, the joy was soon followed by heartbreak. The following morning, the family discovered the lifeless body of the fourth kitten.
"We thought her labor was over by around 10 p.m., since she was feeding her three kittens and even ate dinner herself. We watched her till around 12 and went to sleep. [We] woke up the next day to find the corpse of an orange kitten in the box, and Momo nowhere in sight. She found a new hiding spot in our bookshelf nearby with all her other kittens—we were super sad," Ling said.
At first, Momo's response to the loss seemed muted.
Ling said: "We thought she didn't feel much about it as she moved out of the box after losing the kitten, but later on, after settling the other kittens down, she actually came over and sat by the empty box for a while several times, just looking into space. We don't know how she feels or whether she knows, but she was definitely mourning for a while."
The three surviving kittens are doing well, although their eyes have not yet opened.
"We haven't named them yet, but there is a waitlist of people we know that wants to adopt them," said Ling. "So far so good! They were pretty weak at first but now all doing well," the owner added.
Instagram users have been quick to offer their support and condolences in the comments.
"Oh my gosh my cat just gave birth 2 days ago as well to 4 kittens and one of them just passed away this morning. Hope y'all are doing well," wrote one user.
"Your babies are very proud of youuuuu, Momooo," posted another.
"Stay strong mama Momo! Lots of love and kisses," a third user added.
"GOOD JOB MOMO!!" wrote one commenter, celebrating her strength.
"Bless them all beautiful angels. Am so sorry for your loss of 4th one," shared another.

Everyone Said She'd Never Find a Cat That Likes Being Held—They Were Wrong
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A woman who was told she'd never find a cuddly cat proved everyone wrong after sharing a video of her girl cat's morning routine that has melted hearts among social media users. The heartwarming clip shared on Instagram in July under the username @gabmarygrasso, shows the poster, 27-year-old Gabrielle Grasso, asking her tabby cat, Penny: "Do you want cuddles?" The 6-year-old kitty answers with a long, heartfelt meow, before climbing onto the windowsill and then leaping in her arms, embracing her in a warm hug with her little paws. "You'll never find a cat that likes being held. It's just not in their nature.' Well, anyway... this is my and my girl cat's morning routine," reads layover text in the clip. "A real life convo!" the caption says. Grasso told Newsweek: "People often think cats are aloof and indifferent pets but that couldn't be further from the truth. "Cats express their love for people in complex ways. Penny happens to express hers through the constant desire to be held and cuddled! She is extremely affectionate and would let me hold her all day if it were possible!" Cats are known for being solitary and independent, but this doesn't mean they can't be loving and sweet with the people they are bonded to. Some cat owners even describe their cats as being incredibly clingy and never leaving them alone. But why are some cats more open to humans than others? Kittens raised with a friendly father grow up to be cats that are friendlier toward people compared to those with a non-friendly father, according to PetMD. However, this is only the case when they are also socialized. Single cats may also seek more love and attention from their humans because they have nobody else to interact with. Cats can show affection in many different ways. The most obvious is their body language, they will arch against your hands or rub against your legs; they will also meow, purr, or trill; they may place their front paws on you to ask for attention. Other typical signs of cat's affection include following you around the house; sitting next to you on the couch; sleeping next to (or on top of) you at night; and headbutting you. One user, commented: "I honestly don't understand people that say cats aren't affectionate. My cat will start meowing in the middle of the night , just to get me to come out of my room and give her a cuddle. This cat also thinks laying on top of my chest and pushing her fur in my face is the bestest thing in the world." Kitotterkat added: "Whoever said that hasn't met many cats, mine is like velcro and the only time he doesn't meow is when he's being held." She pressed the then-longshot Republican candidate about misogynistic, sexist comments he made in the past, such as calling some women 'fat pigs, dogs, slobs, and disgusting animals.' The heated exchange led to Trump's notorious comment to Don Lemon, who was then an anchor at CNN, telling him that Kelly had 'blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her… wherever.' Smith on his Sirius show about how she's been able to 'check' her 'personal feelings' about Trump and that she's '100% rooting' for the president.
