Water disputes between Andhra, Telangana should be resolved amicably: Chandrababu Naidu
Addressing a press conference in the secretariat at Amaravati near here today, the Chief Minister responded to Telangana's objection over the 'Banakacharla' project suggesting that both Telugu states use Godavari waters together, especially the waters that would otherwise flow into the sea.
Naidu said: 'Both the States are already using Godavari water. Apart from Polavaram, other projects have not received formal approval. As per the Reorganisation Act, Polavaram is under construction. We are transferring water to another basin from the last reaches of the Godavari stream.'
Chandrababu Naidu recalled previous disputes between the officials of both States over the Krishna Barrage and how they were resolved through discussions with the Governor.
'It's not beneficial to fight over the limited Krishna waters. Let us continue with existing project-wise allocations until the new tribunal finalises fresh allocations. I started many projects in united Andhra Pradesh, including Devadula and Kalwakurthy. We fought in the Assembly over Yellampalli. I never objected to the Kaleshwaram project,' Chandrababu Naidu reminisced.
The CM questioned why there should be disputes over water usage that would otherwise flow into the ocean.
'If legal clarity is required, we can discuss it with the Centre. Creating conflict over such usage is unreasonable. No one benefits from water disputes between the two states, it only misleads the public. There is no need for conflict,' the Chief Minister observed.

Ongole: Display of a massive 3600-foot national flag, stretching from the Police Parade Grounds to the Addanki Bus Stand Centre, attracted the attention of people here on Wednesday. The SP noted that this 3600-foot flag rally in Ongole city has become a source of district-wide pride. SP Damodar also addressed road safety concerns, particularly the issue of helmet usage among two-wheeler riders. He stressed that many fatalities occur due to head injuries from riding without helmets, leaving families devastated. He emphasised that helmets serve as protective shields for two-wheeler users and urged all riders to wear helmets, stating 'A mother gives birth, but a helmet gives rebirth.' He encouraged students and vehicle users to ensure their family members follow road safety rules and wear helmets when riding bikes. Totapuri mango farmers to get Rs 176 cr subsidy from Centre & state
Tirupati: Totapuri mango farmers across the erstwhile Chittoor district heaved a sigh of relief, with the Central government stepping in to share the financial burden of the Rs 4 per kg subsidy announced earlier by the Andhra Pradesh government. The move has brought hope to thousands of cultivators who have been battling poor market prices and mounting losses through the season. The Centre has formally approved the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) for Totapuri mangoes on Tuesday and will contribute Rs 1.86 per kg. The State Government has matched that contribution, taking the combined subsidy to Rs 3.72 per kg. Since the State had already promised a Rs 4 per kg support, it will bear the remaining Rs 0.28, ensuring farmers receive the full benefit. The announcement follows a request from Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who had proactively declared the subsidy even before farmer protests surfaced. Citing the Centre's earlier decision to support mango growers in Karnataka under the MIS, the Chief Minister urged for a similar relief package for Andhra farmers which was now accepted by the Central government. 'This subsidy is a game-changer. We had no bargaining power in the market. The prices were crashing, and many were preparing to dump their produce. Now at least we will be able to recover our investment,' said R Lakshmi Narayana, a Totapuri grower from Puthalapattu. An estimated 3.25 lakh tonne mangoes have already been procured in the Chittoor district. With 15,000 tonne still expected to be harvested, the total eligible quantity may reach 3.4 lakh tonne. The financial outlay for the subsidy is projected at Rs 136 crore, with the Centre bearing Rs 63.24 crore and the state Rs 72.76 crore. In Tirupati and Annamayya districts together, close to one lakh tonne have been processed, with the Centre contributing Rs 18.6 crore and the State Rs 21.4 crore. Altogether, the total support for Totapuri growers in the region is expected to exceed Rs 176 crore, Rs 81.84 crore from the Centre and Rs 94.16 crore from the state government. Importantly, the state government has chosen not to impose restrictions present in the Centre's MIS guidelines implemented in Karnataka, such as capping support at five tonne per hectare and two hectares per farmer. This flexible approach has allowed several large-scale farmers to receive subsidies of up to Rs 2 lakh, compared to a maximum of Rs 40,000 per farmer in Karnataka. With mango arrivals now dropping to around 1,000 tonne per day from a peak of 10,000–11,000 tonne earlier, officials are focusing on verifying beneficiary lists prepared through Rythu Seva Kendras. Disbursement of subsidy is expected to begin by August 15. Officials have termed the Centre's response as timely and effective. 'This is a rare example of Centre-State collaboration where farmers are the real beneficiaries,' said a senior agriculture official, noting that the intervention could set a positive precedent for cooperative farm policies in times of market distress.

CM proposes Dattatreya for Vice-President's post
Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has proposed the name of former Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya for the Vice-President's post that has fallen vacant following the dramatic resignation of the incumbent Jagdeep Dhankhar. Reddy has opined that having Dattatreya would render justice to the southern state of Telangana and to BCs. He said that his removal from the Governor's post was an insult to Telangana and its people. This can duly be compensated by naming him as Dhankhar's successor. He was responding to a question on Dhankhar's resignation during a press conference in Delhi on Wednesday. However, he quickly clarified that it was not his party's position, and he was speaking on behalf of Telangana people. He assured to work towards evolving a national consensus, if Dattatreya is declared as the V-P candidate. Revanth Reddy said that two resolutions were passed in the Assembly regarding 42 per cent reservation for BCs in education, job opportunities, and local bodies and were sent to Parliament. But the Centre is 'delaying its approval'. He said that the Congress party will put pressure on the Centre and a plan of action will be chalked out during the meeting with Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday for garnering support from all Opposition parties. The Chief Minister said that the Congress MPs will be explained in detail about the caste census. Over allegations of minority appeasement through Muslim reservation, he reiterated that groups of Muslim community were identified based on their economic backwardness. He affirmed that Muslims were not given reservations based on religion, but because of backwardness. He said that 38 Muslim sub-castes are getting reservations in Madhya Pradesh. He questioned whether it is true that 27 Muslim sub-castes are getting reservations in Gujarat and seven Muslim sub-castes in Uttar Pradesh. He questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to include Muslim groups in Gujarat under the Pasmanda category for reservations. He said reservations were continuing in States like Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. The Chief Minister emphasised that the BJP leaders are talking without the slightest understanding about BC reservations. He accused them of finding excuses to block BC reservations one way or the other. He said that the expert committee on caste census has given a report, which will be placed before the people after a threadbare discussion in the Cabinet and Legislative Assembly. Deriding his predecessor K Chandrashekar Rao for his 'injustice' to BCs by amending the Panchayat Raj Act, Revanth Reddy said that the present Congress government was trying to provide reservations based on social backwardness.
