AP agrees to take up repair work at Srisailam project

HYDERABAD: Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, which agreed to resolve the long-standing river water disputes at a meeting in New Delhi, also ratified earlier decisions made by the Apex Council in 2020 and as per the AP Reorganisation Act, the Krishna River Management Board office will be located in AP, while the Godavari River Management Board office will be based in Telangana. Another key decision was AP agreeing to take up repairs and restoration work at the Srisailam dam, one of the oldest and most critical multi-purpose projects shared by both states. Given safety concerns over the dam's plunge pool and structural components, and since it falls under AP's jurisdiction, the Naidu govt will undertake necessary work. The project is vital to both Telugu states for meeting their irrigation and drinking water requirements. "There were no arguments or heated exchanges. The agenda did not include that issue. The Jal Shakti ministry only facilitated the talks; it did not take sides," he clarified. Taking a swipe at former CM K Chandrasekhar Rao, Revanth alleged that KCR had surrendered Telangana's water rights to AP. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like How to Trade ETH/USD Without Holding Ether IC Markets Learn More Undo "Now, the Congress govt is trying to correct those mistakes. This meeting, though informal, has provided a constructive platform to move forward," he said. When asked about the credibility of the proposed committee, Revanth said: "Even laws passed by Parliament are not implemented by PM Modi, including the Reorganisation Act. If we keep doubting everything, there will be no progress. Our aim is to resolve, not prolong, these issues. We are accountable to the people of Telangana, not to political agendas." The meeting was widely seen as a promising start in breaking the deadlock on critical water-sharing concerns with both sides committed to a structured dialogue, something that has eluded the two states for nearly a decade since bifurcation of combined AP in 2014. Meanwhile, Revanth Reddy is likely to meet union railways and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi on Thursday.

Before going to court, Telangana willing to talk with AP CM Chandrababu Naidu, says CM Revanth Reddy; seeks cordial ties like with Karnataka

HYDERABAD: A day after submitting a strong objection with the Centre against the Banakacherla project of Andhra Pradesh govt, chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Friday said the state cabinet meeting on June 23 will discuss inviting AP chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu , ministers and officials for talks on the contentious issue between the two Telugu riparian states. In a chat with media in New Delhi before returning to Hyderabad after his two-day tour, Revanth said the Telangana govt did not want to continue controversies which can be resolved through talks. "There will be no compromise on river water interests of Telangana, but before availing the option of going to court, we are willing to hold talks with Chandrababu Naidu. A solution can be found between the two states only through talks. We do not want unnecessary disputes. Our policy is to continue cordial relations with AP like we are doing so with Karnataka. Like AP is claiming that it has certain rights being a downstream state, even Telangana has similar rights," he said. He said that Chandrababu Naidu first approached the central govt for the project without consulting Telangana. "That is our objection. We have already formed committees at ministerial level to resolve issues arising out of AP State Reorganisation Act between the two states. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like USDJPY đang đi lên không? 'No mention in Act' The CM also pointed out that only Polavaram project is mentioned in the Reorganisation Act. Banakacherla is an ancillary project of Polavaram, which has no mention in the Act, Revanth said. "I am seeking a blanket NOC for 500 TMC share in Krishna river water, whereas Harish Rao, in his letter to the Centre, sought only 405 TMC. The AP state should think about taking up projects only after Telangana state completes all its projects and utilises its rightful share of water. The BRS came to power on the plank of water, funds and jobs. It is now trying to use the water sentiment again as a Sanjeevini (lifeline) to revive the party ," Revanth said, adding he will visit New Delhi again on July 6 and 7. He further said: "A day before I met Union ministers, including CR Patil, BJP state president and Union minister G Kishan Reddy also met them. He is working as a liaison officer for KT Rama Rao. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah said the Kaleshwaram was like an ATM for previous BRS govt. Now, BJP MP Eatala Rajender is claiming that Kaleshwaram was taken with the approval of KCR cabinet. Kishan Reddy should clarify whether Modi and Shah are speaking the truth or Eatala is correct. "

Godavari-Banakacherla row: Revanth Reddy hints at moving SC; Centre may call Apex Council meet soon with him & Chandrababu Naidu

HYDERABAD: With tensions escalating between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh over the proposed Godavari-Banakacherla link project, the Centre is likely to convene an Apex Council meeting soon, bringing both chief ministers to the table to resolve the contentious water sharing dispute. The Apex Council-last convened in Oct 2020-is headed by Union jal shakti minister CR Patil. CM A Revanth Reddy and irrigation minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy, who met Patil in Delhi on Thursday, said the Union minister had assured them that the meeting would be held soon. During the hour-long meeting, Revanth made it clear that Telangana would not compromise on its water interests under any circumstances. He conveyed to the minister that while the state was open to resolving disputes through dialogue, it would approach the Supreme Court if the Centre's actions were not in Telangana's favour. Revanth proposed an alternative plan, stating that if AP truly believed surplus water was available in the Godavari, the Centre could consider linking the Icchampally-Nagarjuna Sagar route to lift water to the Penna basin, instead of Polavaram-Banakacherla. This, he said, could be centrally funded. The CM also urged the Centre to expedite the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal-II verdict. The CM urged Patil to intervene and halt all works initiated by the AP govt on the Banakacherla project, and to reject the pre-feasibility report submitted by AP on the link project. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Scam Exposed: What They Won't Tell You about zero trust! They expressed concern over how the Union finance ministry and environment ministry appeared to be fast-tracking approvals for AP's projects while neglecting Telangana's. Revanth said AP's claim of basing the Banakacherla project on Godavari floodwaters had no legal or technical standing. "There is no mention of floodwaters or surplus waters in the GWDT-1980," he said, arguing that the entire project lacks regulatory grounding. Revanth reminded the Union minister that as per the Reorganisation Act, new inter-state projects must first be cleared by the Godavari River Management Board, Central Water Commission, and the Apex Council. "The AP govt violated mandatory procedures and is going ahead with project. Their claim that project is based on floodwaters is not only misleading but has no statutory support," he said. Uttam said Patil responded positively and confirmed that his ministry had not received any detailed project report related to Banakacherla from AP so far.

Water disputes between Andhra, Telangana should be resolved amicably: Chandrababu Naidu

Vijayawada, June 19 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu suggested that the water disputes on utilising the Godavari and Krishna river waters should be resolved amicably between the AP and Telangana governments. Addressing a press conference in the secretariat at Amaravati near here today, the Chief Minister responded to Telangana's objection over the 'Banakacharla' project suggesting that both Telugu states use Godavari waters together, especially the waters that would otherwise flow into the sea. Naidu said: 'Both the States are already using Godavari water. Apart from Polavaram, other projects have not received formal approval. As per the Reorganisation Act, Polavaram is under construction. We are transferring water to another basin from the last reaches of the Godavari stream.' Chandrababu Naidu recalled previous disputes between the officials of both States over the Krishna Barrage and how they were resolved through discussions with the Governor. 'It's not beneficial to fight over the limited Krishna waters. Let us continue with existing project-wise allocations until the new tribunal finalises fresh allocations. I started many projects in united Andhra Pradesh, including Devadula and Kalwakurthy. We fought in the Assembly over Yellampalli. I never objected to the Kaleshwaram project,' Chandrababu Naidu reminisced. The CM questioned why there should be disputes over water usage that would otherwise flow into the ocean. 'If legal clarity is required, we can discuss it with the Centre. Creating conflict over such usage is unreasonable. No one benefits from water disputes between the two states, it only misleads the public. There is no need for conflict,' the Chief Minister observed. UNI DP RN

Stung by govt's PPP, BRS MP walks out of all-party meeting

Hyderabad: BRS Parliamentary Party Deputy Leader Vaddiraju Ravichandra on Wednesday announced his boycott of the state government's power point presentation, alleging it was organised with 'political malice.' The BRS leader had initially attended the presentation delivered by Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy at the Secretariat. However, Vaddiraju Ravichandra walked out of the meeting in protest against what he termed the Congress government's 'political malfeasance' in organising a Public Private Partnership (PPP) on the Godavari-Banakacherla linkage project. MP Ravichandra unequivocally stated that undertaking this project is illegal and unjust, and that his party strongly opposes it. He urged the state government to strongly voice its case before the Centre on behalf of the people of Telangana, opposing this project proposal and calling for its immediate cancellation. Mr Ravichandra, who exited the meeting expressing strong objection to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's accusations against KCR without considering BRS's suggestions and recommendations, said that as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, if a state undertakes a new project, it must discuss the project details in the Apex Council and obtain approval. Ravichandra expressed regret that the Centre has taken steps to grant project approvals without convening an Apex Council meeting to discuss these actions taken by the Andhra Pradesh government in violation of the Reorganisation Act. 'We request the Chief Minister to write a letter to the Central Water Resources Department to immediately convene an Apex Council meeting. These issues that are hurting the interests of Telangana should be taken to Delhi soon,' said Ravichandra. He further urged the government to convene a special Assembly session where a unanimous resolution should be passed to stop the Polavaram Banakacherla project and sent to the Centre. BRS leaders K Kishore Goud, B Ramamurthy, J Jagan Mohan and others were also present.
