NBA Centel, explained: Why fans and teams are mourning the parody Twitter account
Welcome to FTW Explains, a guide to catching up on and better understanding stuff going on in the world. Have you seen some stuff about something called NBA Centel and how fans and teams are now mourning it? And you're very confused about that whole thing? Don't worry. We're here to help.
Yes, that's right. NBA Centel appears to be no more. No, I'm not talking about NBA Central (@TheDunkCentral) which is a legit account that shares hoops news, stats and highlights.
We're talking NBA Centel, a parody account followed by hundreds of thousands of X (formerly Twitter) users.
Let's help you understand what's up.
What is NBA Centel?
It's a parody account much like Ballsack Sports that has fooled quite a few folks with fake quotes that are sometimes repeated on social media or even on television.
Oh really? When has that happened?
It literally happened the other day to Colin Cowherd:
Draymond Green quote tweeted a Centel quote that was NOT from Kevin Garnett back in 2023.
Who shut down NBA Centel?
No clue. All we know is all its tweets are erased. But they're still posting on Instagram
How did NBA teams react?
They were sad ... mostly.
Even Stephen A. Smith sent his best wishes.

Auburn makes the top eight for four-star forward Jalan Wingfield
Auburn and head coach Bruce Pearl are making quite an impression on a four-star forward from Atlanta. We have reached the point in the year when college basketball recruiting begins to heat up. As usual, Auburn is in the mix to land one of the nation's top forwards. Jalan Wingfield, a four-star power forward from Tri-Cities High School in East Point, Georgia, released his top eight choices this week, which included the Auburn Tigers. Bruce Pearl and the Tigers will compete with Cincinnati, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Ole Miss, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt going forward. Wingfield took time to break down his top eight schools with Joe Tipton of Rivals. He tells Tipton that FSU has the "hometown" feel due to the proximity of Tallahassee to his hometown of Thomasville, Georgia, and that Georgia Tech is special because Yellow Jackets head coach Damon Stoudamire played with his dad, Dontonio Wingfield, in the NBA. When it comes to Auburn, Wingfield recalls Pearl's persistence of developing a relationship with him stands out. 'Bruce Pearl, he's at every one of my AAU games. Courtside. Every time he sees me, he acknowledges me, asks me how I'm doing. Tells me Auburn loves me. So, I would say they play a big part, too, also.' Wingfield is a 6-7 power forward that has "great length and a projectable frame," according to a scouting report by Jamie Shaw of Rivals. He is the No. 14 power forward for the 2026 class according to Rivals' Industry Rankings, and is the No. 7 player from Georgia. The NFL Hall of Fame Game is bad football. You'll watch it anyway.
Good morning, and congratulations on surviving another NFL offseason. We did it y'all. Football is back! Well... kinda. It's more like "football" -- little F and heavy on the air quotes -- is back. What we have Thursday night is the Hall of Fame Game, which might just be the most wasteful use of a cool name in pro sports. "Hall of Fame Game" gives the impression of something a lot better than the product on the field ever turns out to be. It sounds a lot more important than it actually is. Don't get me wrong, the circumstances around the Hall of Fame Game are important. It's in Canton, Ohio, and kicks off a days-long celebration of the newest members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame set to be enshrined later in the week. In 2025, that includes Eric Allen, Jared Allen, Antonio Gates and Sterling Sharpe. They'll be introduced on the field prior to kickoff between the Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions. But shortly after that is when I usually check out. I'm good on the game. I don't miss football that much. The truth is, you don't miss it that much either. You're just watching out of obligation. It feels like something you're supposed to do. We've all been there. Besides, nothing else is on, right? Wrong! This is where I step in to say you don't have to do this to yourself. That game is important to talent evaluators and third stringers fighting for a roster spot only. Nobody else. Literally anything is better. Close your eyes and pick a random movie off Cory Woodroof's top 50 comedies of the 21st century and you'll have a better time. HOF GAME: 5 players to watch in Chargers-Lions In fact, my proposal to the NFL is to move the Hall of Fame game to the regular season. Make it the opener. Get rid of this extra preseason game that two teams have to play every year. It's bad football, and we don't need it... Now please excuse me while I log into my sportsbook app and throw 10 bucks on the Chargers +2.5.
