Big comedian turns the tables on locals ahead of upcoming gig

Yahoo08-06-2025
Comedian and actor Omid Djalili has taken to social media in an attempt to find out what Swindon locals really think of their hometown.
The stand-up comic is set to bring his new show, NAMASTE, to Swindon when he performs at the Wyvern Theatre on Thursday, June 26.
But before he makes the trip to the town, Omid is on the hunt for the inside jokes within the Swindon community that could end up being a hit on stage.
He posed the question in a community Facebook group: "What's funny about life in Swindon that only locals understand?"
Responses so far may not have given the comedian much to work with on his search for material ahead of his Swindon gig, with commenters largely choosing to share their thoughts on the town centre.

Omid last performed in Swindon as part of his nationwide tour of his previous stand-up show The Good Times in February 2022. Tickets for his upcoming performance are available from £34 via www.trafalgartickets.com/wyvern-theatre-swindon.
A description of the show states: "The Persian Comedy Powerhouse performs his critically acclaimed new show NAMASTE where Omid peacefully bows to his inner anger and unleashes a torrent of comedic vitriol upon the current state of this dangerously messed up planet.
"No government gets a green card. No tyrant avoids a take down. No audience member leaves the theatre with an ounce of laughter left in them. You have been warned."

Coronation Street fans 'confused' as star suddenly recast after nearly 10 years

Coronation Street fans were left "confused" last night (July 14) after they realised a character had suddenly been recast in Weatherfield after nearly 10 years. Lily Platt, the daughter of David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) and his late wife, Kylie (Paula Lane) has been a resident on the ITV soap since she was born in 2013. Until yesterday, the young character had been played by actress Brooke Malonie since 2016, but it's safe to say viewers were shocked to discover the new arrival. It comes as fans had noticed she was 'missing' from the cobbles in recent weeks. As of Monday, the role of Lily is now portrayed by Grace Ashcroft-Gardner. Making her debut, Lily is set to be at the centre of a 'dramatic' new storyline with her cousin Sam (Jude Riordan). The two youngsters will also be part of a storyline involving Mick Michaelis and his prison escape, reports Digital Spy. Baffled fans who were watching Monday's episode soon noticed there was a 'random' actress playing Lily, as someone posted on X, formerly Twitter: 'I was wondering who the random girl at the bus stop was... did anyone else know it was Lily Platt before she was seen running down a school corridor, or was that news to you all too?!!' Coronation Street recast Lily Platt #Corrie — Andrew McBride (@andrewmcb) July 14, 2025 Another joked: 'I was slightly confused for a minute by the random, never before seen child waiting at the bus stop but then realised that Lilly Platt has had a head transplant. #Corrie' This person wrote: 'They way #corrie just recast Lily Platt and didn't tell us so for half of today's episode I'm just sat there like who T* is this random child.' One profile commented: 'I get the impression that Brooke maybe decided to leave going by her insta and new headshots up, could be wrong though! 'Couldn't fault her acting when she was in it. 'Best wishes to her whatever happened.'

A village's scarecrow festival has returned with displays inspired by The Beatles, Paddington, Star Wars, Spongebob Squarepants, Harry Potter and more. The Crick Scarecrow Festival in Northamptonshire, now in its 16th year, raises money for local community and charity groups. More than 50 registered scarecrows featured in the weekend event, which typically attracts around 5,000 visitors. Jessica Sheppard, from the Crick Scarecrow Festival committee, said: "We always get a really good turnout… it was really, really busy. "My favourite [display this year] was the Beatlemania one in Marsh Close. The cul-de-sac had all come together to create different scarecrows that represented different Beatles songs." In recent years, the festival has raised £20,000 annually, with this year's total still to be confirmed. Follow Northamptonshire news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X.
