BREAKING NEWS Desperate search for missing camper at Jerrawangala continues as authorities race against the clock

Daily Maila day ago

A desperate search for a missing camper who disappeared in NSW bushland has entered its third day.
Christopher Moore, 38, failed to return home from a camping trip at Jerrawangala, about 32km south of Nowra, on Friday.
He had been dropped off on Wednesday and did not arrive at his pick-up spot two days later.
An urgent search was launched with authorities focusing their efforts around the Jerrawangala and Wandandian regions.
South Coast Police, Police Rescue, and members of the SES, Polair, and NSW Rural Fire Service have all joined in on the search.
Fears have been raised a low-pressure system could bring heavy rain and gale force winds and hamper the search on Tuesday.

Federal court orders Sydney Muslim cleric to remove ‘racist and antisemitic' lectures from social media

A Sydney Muslim cleric has been ordered by the federal court to take down a series of 'fundamentally racist and antisemitic' speeches posted online, and instructed by a judge not to make similar addresses again. Wissam Haddad – whose legal first name is William but who is also known as Abu Ousayd – has been successfully sued by two senior members of Australia's peak Jewish body, the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ), over a series of lectures he gave at the Al Madina Dawah Centre in Bankstown in November 2023 – subsequently broadcast online – in which, the court found, he maligned Jewish people. On Tuesday, Justice Stewart found Haddad breached section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act, which prohibits offensive behaviour based on race or ethnic origin. Sign up for Guardian Australia's breaking news email 'The court has found that the series of lectures, titled 'The Jews of Al Madina', conveys disparaging imputations against Jewish people that, in all the circumstances, were reasonably likely to offend, insult, humiliate and intimidate Jews in Australia. 'The imputations include age-old tropes against Jewish people that are fundamentally racist and antisemitic; they make perverse generalisations against Jewish people as a group.' In his speeches, Haddad quoted and offered interpretation of ayat from the Qur'an and hadith, and described Jewish people as 'mischievous', 'treacherous' and 'vile'. His defence told the court the speeches concerned historical writings about Jewish people in Medina in the 7th century CE, at the time of the prophet Muhammad. His defence also argued the lectures were given for an educational purpose, and that they could not be found to have breached section 18C because they were not public, but rather addressed to a private Muslim audience. But the complainants told court Haddad used 'overtly dehumanising' language about Jewish people and that he revelled in being 'deliberately provocative and inflammatory'. The court heard the speeches were made in the knowledge they would be broadcast online, with microphones and cameras set up to record them. Peter Wertheim, one of the claimants in the case and ECAJ co-chief executive, gave evidence that Haddad's speeches 'making derogatory generalisations, calling Jews a vile and treacherous people, calling them rats and cowards … are things which I think would be experienced by most Jews as dehumanising'. Justice Stewart said Jewish people in Australia would have found Haddad's lecture 'harassing and intimidating' and said the context of the speeches' delivery – as conflict raged in Gaza – had exacerbated their impact. 'The lectures were delivered at a time of heightened vulnerability and fragility experienced by Jews in Australia following the attack by Hamas on 7 October 2023, Israel's bombardment and blockade of Gaza in response, and resultant solidarity protests and other actions in Australia.' In his judgment, Justice Stewart pointedly stated that criticism of Israel, or of the actions of the Israel Defense Forces, was not inherently antisemitic. Sign up to Breaking News Australia Get the most important news as it breaks after newsletter promotion 'Political criticism of Israel, however inflammatory or adversarial, is not by its nature, criticism of Jews in general or based on Jewish racial or ethnic identity. 'The conclusion that it is not antisemitic to criticise Israel is the corollary of the conclusion that to blame Jews for the actions of Israel is antisemitic; the one flows from the other.' The court rejected two constitutional arguments made by Haddad: that part 2A of the Racial Discrimination Act (including section 18C) was beyond the power of the parliament to legislate because it conflicted with the implied freedom of political communication; or that it contravened section 116 of the constitution as a law 'prohibiting the free exercise of any religion'. The court ordered Haddad to remove the speeches from the internet, and not to make similar public addresses in future. Lawyers for both sides will address the court on the manner and wording of any 'corrective notice' required to be published. Wertheim, and co-claimant Robert Goot, did not seek damages. The court has ordered Haddad to pay the claimants' costs.

Daycare worker Joshua Brown is unmasked after being charged with more than 70 child sex offences - as new details emerge

Joshua Brown was pictured sporting blue hair with his boyfriend around the time he is accused of committing more than 70 sex offences at the childcare centre where he worked. About 1,200 children are being urged to get tested for infectious diseases after Brown's alleged offending came to light on Tuesday. Brown is facing charges including the sexual penetration of a child and producing child abuse material over his time at Creative Garden Early Learning Centre Point Cook, where he worked between October 2021 and February 2024. In December 2021, Brown's partner posted a photo of the pair which featured the alleged pedophile grinning with pink and blue dyed hair. Police are also investigating allegations of other offending at a childcare centre in Essendon. Brown worked at at a total of 20 childcare centres over an eight-year period between January 2017 and May 2025 and authorities have contacted 2,600 families of children who attended the centres in a bid to have them tested for diseases. The charges, which were revealed by Victoria Police on Tuesday, include the sexual penetration of a child, producing child abuse material and recklessly contaminating goods to cause alarm or anxiety. His alleged victims attended a daycare centre in Point Cook, in Melbourne's southwest, between April 2022 and January 2023. Brown was employed at 20 childcare centres over an eight-year period between January 2017 and May 2025. Detectives are prioritising investigations into alleged offending at a second childcare centre in Essendon, in the city's northwest. Police have contacted 2,600 families of children who attended the daycare centres while Brown was employed. Victorian Premier Jacinta Allen said she was 'sickened by these allegations of abuse'. Brown has remained in custody since his arrest in mid-May. His Point Cook home was raided by police shortly after an investigation was launched earlier that same month. He was not known to police before his arrest and had a valid Working With Children Check, which has since been cancelled. Brown will next appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on September 15. Minister for Children Lizzie Blandthorn said an investigation to see if there was anything educators could have done would begin immediately. She said the department will consider other security measures including the introduction of security cameras. 'Childcare is regulated in a national context… it's complex, but there has been an occasion over the last period of time in which jurisdictions have questioned the adequacy of the national law and have been working with the Commonwealth on how we can improve it,' she said. 'One of the areas for example… that I would like to see brought forward is a national system for registration for workers.' Acting Commander Janet Stevenson said the case had been 'deeply distressing'. She did not reveal what sparked the police investigation but assured the public no other childcare workers were alleged to be involved. 'We know there are potentially people out there who have information about this investigation that they wish to pass on to police,' she said. 'This may be people who had children at a centre where the man worked or staff who may have worked with him and noticed particular behaviours.' The Project's replacement 10 News+ cops a battering in the ratings following lacklustre premiere

Channel Ten 's new program 10 News+ has been savaged in the ratings following its Monday night premiere. The current affairs program, slotted in to replace The Project after it was sensationally axed after 16 years, was watched by a paltry 291,000 people, according to overnight ratings released by OzTAM. Channel Nine and Channel Seven dominated the timeslot, with Seven News attracting 1.5million viewers, and 9News following closely with 1.45million viewers. The first night figures have shocked industry insiders, after the show heavily promoted its investigation into Australian mother Debbie Voulgaris, who has been jailed for 16 years after smuggling 7kg of drugs into Taiwan. Meanwhile, a very healthy 478,000 viewers tuned in last Friday to watch The Project's emotional finale. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. It's not good news for the program hosted by former Channel Seven reporters Denham Hitchcock and Amelia Brace after KIIS FM radio host Kyle Sandilands, 54, slammed the first episode, claiming it was difficult to watch. 'Being a Channel Seven network employee, I still committed to watch 7News but I recorded 10News+ and went back to watch it,' he explained on his radio show on Tuesday. 'I know it was the first episode and it's tough to critique the first, but it was weird. It was like ABC TV had sex with Ron Burgundy and that's what came out.' Kyle said the news series didn't air 'one story I cared about.' 'They are nice folks at Channel 10 but they want to be this high and mighty. I wanted to give it a go but I felt like it missed the mark,' he continued. His co-host Jackie 'O' Henderson defended the series and insisted viewers should 'give it a chance'. 'I bet if you listened to the first show of you and I, it would have been sh*t. You need to give things a chance,' she said. The show also received mixed reviews from other viewers, with many sharing their thoughts on X. Several compared 10 News+ to A Current Affair with one posting: 'This is like ACA. Going to people's houses to talk and them avoiding the cameras.' 'You replaced The Project with a Temu ACA not seeing @theprojecttv is incredibly depressing. 10news+ sucks!' complained another viewer. Someone else said: 'This is proper @Channel7 style commercial JUNK. It's like watching a cross between Fox News and Anchorman. Why the silly 'news' voices!?' One more person tuning in at home asked: 'Anyone else bored so far?' while someone else said, 'please no more long investigation reports it's 6pm'. 'Oh dear. I thought I would give 10 News Plus a go. I feel like we have regressed 20 years! An inauthentic painfully choreographed attempt at current affairs!' one said. 'Dribble. Won't last the year' a viewer said with another adding, 'Felt like it was a Comedy Company parody from the 80s. The fist pump at the end? Yikes.' Not everyone was so negative with one fan writing: 'Loving @10NewsPlus - strong launch story. Is this the new Schapelle Corby story we all need to know about. 10 news should be very proud.' The show's hosts, recently poached Seven journalists Hitchcock and Brace, opened the episode by telling the audience what they can expect from the hard-hitting program. 'Firstly, we're not here to tell you what to think, to scare or depress you' Hitchcock said. 'We will give you facts, information you can trust – the truth,' Brace added. 'Of course, we are a daily news program, so you won't miss the stories that matter,' Hitchcock went on. 'But we are also digging deeper with investigations and original reporting you won't see anywhere else,' Brace said. The first episode included an investigation on drug-smuggling Melbourne mum Debbie Voulgaris and a sit-down chat with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
