Cody Rhodes has opened up about a pivotal and painful moment from his early WWE career that he says was the first time he "mentally checked out" from the company. The current King of the Ring winner recalled the last-minute cancellation of his scheduled match at WrestleMania 29.
Speaking with his guest, Nikki Bella, on the What Do You Wanna Talk About podcast, both stars relived their shared experience. They discussed the deep frustration of having a WrestleMania moment taken away from them.
A Painful WrestleMania Memory
The planned match for WrestleMania 29 in 2013 was an eight-person mixed tag team bout. It was scheduled to feature Cody Rhodes, Damien Sandow, and The Bella Twins against the team of Tons of Funk (Brodus Clay and Tensai) and The Funkadactyls (Naomi and Cameron). However, due to time constraints, the match was infamously cut from the show at the last minute.
Nikki Bella expressed her lingering hurt over the decision. Cody Rhodes then shared his own intense reaction to the news, explaining it was a breaking point for him. "I was so angry, and at that point, I think that's the first moment where I was like, 'I'm out. I am out,'" Rhodes recalled. "Out didn't come till years later, but I thought, no, I'm out."
More Than Just A Match
For a WWE superstar, being on the WrestleMania card is the culmination of a year's worth of hard work. It is not only a chance to perform on the biggest stage in the industry, but it also comes with the biggest financial payday of the year. Having that opportunity taken away at the last second is a significant creative and financial blow.

During that "Divas Era," it was a constant struggle for the female superstars to get meaningful time on major shows, making the loss of a WrestleMania match even more disheartening.

The Seeds of The "American Nightmare"
For Cody Rhodes, this moment was a crucial turning point in his first WWE run. At the time, he was part of the popular heel tag team "Rhodes Scholars" with Damien Sandow and was a featured performer on television. The cancellation of his match was a sign that, in his view, his hard work was not being valued by management.
While he would not leave WWE for another three years, he identifies this incident as the moment the seeds of his discontent were planted. This frustration would eventually fuel his decision to leave the company in 2016 to reinvent himself on the independent circuit, a journey that ultimately led him back to WWE as "The American Nightmare."
Today, he is one of the company's top stars, preparing to challenge the heel John Cena for the Undisputed WWE Championship in a Street Fight at SummerSlam.

Watch Jelly Roll Fight Logan Paul in Much-Hyped WWE SummerSlam Match

The much-hyped battle between Jelly Roll and Logan Paul finally hit the ring Saturday at WWE's SummerSlam event, where the country singer and tag team partner Randy Orton faced off against the social media provocateur and his partner Drew McIntyre. The fight, which was set up over a month ago on Smackdown and was heavily promoted since then, marked Jelly Roll's first official match as a wrestler after making a handful of appearances at WWE events over the past year. 'The day the music died,' one of his opponents quipped. That aforementioned move knocked out Jelly Roll for a considerable amount of time as Orton fought against Paul and McIntyre alone. However, he recovered and made his way back to the ring 'like the walking dead' in time to accept Orton's tag-in, and delivered some clotheslines and choke slams on Paul to even up the match. However, the match concluded when Paul dropped his signature move the 'Paul from Grace' on Jelly Roll, who was then promptly pinned and defeated. Jelly Roll Slams Logan Paul on ‘Kimmel' Desk During Guest Host Debut

Jelly Roll literally came out swinging for his debut hosting gig on Jimmy Kimmel Live! During his interview with WWE wrestler Randy Orton, the pair were interrupted by none other than fellow WWE wrester Drew McIntyre and Logan Paul. Words were exchanged as McIntyre came in calling Jelly Roll an 'inspiration to trailer trash all across the world' for his 200-pound weight-loss, and McInytre and Orton began scrapping. As Jelly Roll tried to cut to commercial break after losing his guest, Paul came out on the show stage to admonish the singer, who he called 'Mr. Dummy Roll.' The influencer-turned-professional wrestler was met with a booing crowd, but that didn't stop him from trash talking the guest host. 'You people are so stupid, someone has to stop him,' Paul said before addressing Jelly Roll directly. 'I'll tell you what you are. You, my friend, are a greasy, redneck, prison rat,' Paul continued, referring to the singer's years behind bars before slapping Jelly Roll in the face. The crowd erupted into applause as Jelly Roll plugged his upcoming appearance at the WWE SummerSlam in August. The singer is up for a match with Paul and will be helped out by Orton. McIntyre will be Paul's fighting partner in the ring. The whole bit was a preview of that fight. It's not the first time that Jelly Roll, Orton, McIntyre, and Paul got into an altercation as a way to promote the upcoming fight. Last week, at Saturday's WWE Main Event in Nashville, Jelly Roll and Paul got into quite the altercation when the country singer came in to defend Orton. Orton had just been jump-kicked by wrestler Drew McIntyre when Paul began beating down on him too. Jelly Roll then grabbed Paul and laubched him across the ring before security came in to 'break up' the dramatized fight. As Orton said on the Kimmel show during his interview with Jelly Roll: 'Retribution is going to come quick and swift at SummerSlam.' See Jelly Roll Clash With Logan Paul on WWE ‘Smackdown'

Jelly Roll returned to the WWE ring Friday at the Smackdown event in his hometown of Nashville, where the singer clashed with Logan Paul. Nearly a year after making his official wrestling debut at SummerSlam 2024, Jelly Roll again took the WWE stage at the Bridgestone Arena to perform his song 'Liar,' which has become an unofficial anthem for the wrestling company after the singer performed it at the SummerSlam event. More from Rolling Stone Jelly Roll Twins (and Hilariously Duets) 'Need a Favor' With Kevin James How to Watch 'WWE LFG' Online Without Cable Jelly Roll Thanks Post Malone for Bringing Him Along on the Big Ass Stadium Tour: 'Unreal' However, after Jelly Roll made his way to the ring to sing the track, the performance was hijacked by Logan Paul, who then went on a long tirade about the singer's place in the WWE. 'Listen Jelly, this ring is sacred… you belong on a stage, not a WWE ring,' Paul told him. 'You know what I'm disgusted by: Celebrities, influencers, personalities, whatever you want to classify this as, coming in to our industry, leeching off of our success, on a platform we have built. Brother, clout chasers like you disgust me… The WWE doesn't need a Jelly Roll, the WWE needs a Logan Paul.' Jelly Roll retorted, 'You must not completely understand where you are, Logan Paul. This is my hometown, Nashville, Tennessee. Just so we're clear, down here, nobody gives a damn about your podcast, Logan.' As Jelly and Paul talked it out in the ring, actual wrestler Randy Orton made his way down the catwalk to lambast the 'outsider' Paul. Orton then entered the ring and was about to teach Paul a lesson when wrestler Drew McIntyre suddenly appeared to jump-kick Orton. McIntyre was then escorted from the ring, at which point Paul started beating down on the fallen Orton. Thankfully, Jelly Roll was there to save the day, coming to Orton's rescue by peeling Paul off of him. The whole ordeal seems to hint that Jelly Roll will make his official return as a wrestler and face off against Paul at the upcoming SummerSlam, scheduled for August 2 and 3 at East Rutherford, New Jersey's MetLife Stadium.
