Ferguson latest as Roma interest in Ireland striker is revived two years on
The Serie A giants are eager to bolster their striking options and are free to dip into the transfer market now that UEFA has closed the case on their breaching of Financial Fair Play.
Roma have been fined €3m by Europe's governing body, a drop in the ocean compared to the €80m punishment handed out to Chelsea - although €59m of that has been suspended.
That means they can head into the summer window with certainty, and one of the first decisions facing them could relate to Ferguson.
Their interest in the Meathman first emerged in Mirror Sport in May 2023, while Jose Mourinho was still in charge of I Giallorossi.
At that time, however, Brighton had no desire to part company with Ferguson, and just weeks earlier they had handed him his second new contract in six months.
There are still three years to run on that deal, which expires in the summer of 2028, however the Seagulls are now open to losing the 20-year-old, even on a permanent basis.
Some reports state that they are willing to sell Ferguson for between €25m - €30m, well shy of previous valuations.
The Ireland ace endured a difficult campaign last year. An ankle injury meant he lost ground on his rivals for a starting spot at Brighton under new boss Fabian Hurzeler.
He made just two starts before another ankle injury in late December ruled him out for a month and almost scuppered his prospects of moving away from Brighton on loan.
Despite his fitness woes, West Ham's former Brighton boss Graham Potter made a move late in the window, but he started Ferguson just once and played him for a total of just over 150 minutes.
While another loan move this summer has been suggested - with clubs such as Celtic and Everton linked with the youngster - it appears that Brighton could opt to cash in on him.
And having brushed off Roma's interest two years ago, reports in Italy suggest that the Premier League men have initiated contact this time around.
Serie A side Atalanta have also been mentioned as potential suitors, should they lose Argentinean-born Italy international Mateo Retegui this summer.

Away from the pitch, he is quiet, shy, humble and unassuming but in the Spanish province of Gipuzkoa in 2011, he wiped the floor with rivals in an Under-12 chess championship triumph. Zubimendi explained: 'It's a game that requires you to have everything under control. In both sports, the midfield is crucial because it defines the style of play.' READ MORE IN FOOTBALL Despite Liverpool and Real Madrid threatening to derail the move, it was a transfer Arsenal always had under control. Last summer, Arteta wanted to raid Sociedad for both Zubimendi AND Mikel Merino, sending then sporting director Edu to Marbella to thrash out the ambitious plan. The Spanish club did not want to lose both, instead only letting Merino join in a £32m deal. So Arsenal waited a year before activating his £51m release clause. Arteta's presentations are well known, leaving most players and agents astounded by the level of detail and care put into them. SunSport understands that Arteta and Zubimendi had an instant connection, sold on the project and vision at the Emirates. Madrid made a late play for Zubimendi in June with new manager Xabi Alonso a big fan — both are represented by the same agent too — but Arsenal were not concerned. From March, the transfer had been fully signed off, allowing Arsenal to press on with other targets for the summer, including a new No 9. The recruitment strategy used by Arsenal and Arteta evaluates players in a tier system, with 'Tier One' meeting all parameters to improve the squad and take the team to the next level. In short, 'world class'. SunSport understands that Zubimendi is the ultimate 'Tier One' signing, one that Arsenal took their time over before making checkmate.

Robbie Keane reacts to Mikey Johnston talk live on Brazilian sports show
Robbie Keane has told a Brazilian sports show that Ireland winger Mikey Johnston can be a hit at Serie A leaders Flamengo. Ferencvaros head coach Keane was called out of the blue by his former Inter Milan teammate Vampeta, a co-host of Jovem Pan Esportes. The pair were signed around the same time in the summer of 2000, and both left that winter - Keane to Leeds United on-loan and Vampeta to Paris St Germain. Keane, with 14 appearances, played twice as many games as his Brazilian pal. The call began with Vampeta asking Keane how he was, before passing the phone over to co-host Pilhado, who quizzed the former Ireland skipper in English. Keane added that Johnston was getting 'better and better' as a player. Johnston was on Saturday linked with a sensational €6m move to Flamengo, who are currently top of the Brazilian Serie A. West Brom are currently in Austria for a pre-season training camp, but Johnston has not joined his teammates, according to the latest reporting in the Express and Star. Baggies officials are working on the potential move and Johnston is expected in Brazil this week to finalise the deal. It would be a most remarkable transfer, with Johnston becoming the first Irish player to line out in Brazil's top-flight. Keane last week was involved in another surprise move by a Boys in Green star, when he signed Callum O'Dowda to his Hungarian champions from Cardiff City. Here's how the conversation with Jovem Pan Esportes went… Vampeta: 'Hello Keane, amigo, how are you?' Robbie Keane: 'How are you?' Vampeta: Fine Keane: Yeah, are you good? Vampeta: Yes, good man. Keane: How are you my friend? Vampeta: Fine. One minute please. Pilhado: Hi, I'm Vampeta's friend, how are you? Let me ask a question. We are in a programme in Brazil live, I want to know, do you know Mike Johnston, a striker from Ireland? Keane: Yeah, Michael, he's a winger, a left-winger, he's really small and fast. Pilhado: (Translates answer) But let me ask you something, he is a good name for Flamengo, a Brazilian team here? Keane: 'I'm with my Brazilian (fades out, but likely referring to Ferencvaros assistant coach Leandro de Almeida)... The fans will like him, because he is really fast and skillful. Pilhado: 'Do you think he is a good player for a big team in Brazil? Keane: 'Yeah, I think he is getting better and better. Also, he is a good guy. Pilhado: 'Thank you so much. Vampeta tells me he loves you.' Keane: 'Tell him I love him.' Pilhado: 'Roberto Carlos is with us also.' Keane: 'Ah, Roberto, my best friend. I love him.' Pilhado: 'Thank you so much.' Keane: 'Ciao guys.' You can watch the exchange here...
