MOVIE REVIEW: We discover if darkness prevails with 'MCU' anti-heroes 'Thunderbolts*'
The Marvel Cinematic Universe ( MCU) embraces its dark side with a team-up of the titular anti-heroes.
The unconventional and troubled group are forced to embark on a dangerous mission against an all-powerful enemy who threatens the entire planet.
Perhaps reflecting its rockier road over the past few years, a few lesser known directors have been taking on MCU flicks and this time it's Jake Schreier ( Paper Towns, Robot & Frank) who finds his name up in lights.
He proves a steady and sturdy hand for a film that ends up being much more than the Marvel take on Suicide Squad a lot of us were expecting.
Other than Florence Pugh ( Yelena) and Sebastian Stan ( Bucky) the cast lacks big name big screen star power but this helps the ensemble to create a realistic bond amid horrible histories that weigh on all of their minds.
I loved how mental health was the overriding theme, even with the main villain, and Schreier makes use of literal and figurative darkness to ram this home; the thoroughly desaturated colours are a long way from the usual MCU day-glow palette.
Much of the excellent musical score by Son Lux seems to sample Pixies' 1988 hit Where Is My Mind?, which is a very appropriate choice given the subject matter.
Pugh is at the flick's core; the Oxford-born star manifests sadness, pain, rage and heroism aplenty.
Humour comes from David Harbour ( Alexei), Wyatt Russell ( John) builds on his Falcon and the Winter Soldier role and Lewis Pullman ( Bob) is a sheepish, puzzled revelation.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus ( Valentina) isn't quite as nasty as she could be, and her character and motivations feel lifted from TV's The Boys.
The film takes a while to get going too, with the team trapped underground for much of the first third.
Darkness prevails overall, however, as Thunderbolts* cleverly uses human emotions and psychological issues to grand effect while setting up a terrific, turbulent team to create MCU magic.

More details as 'Spider-Man 4' filming to shut Glasgow roads
Residents and businesses in the city centre have been notified that a production will shut down the area between July 28 and August 13. While no details have been released of the production, it is understood to be Spider-Man 4, which we previously reported will shoot in Glasgow this summer. Now, more precise details of the restrictions have been released. The closure will close Bothwell Street and also impact Wellington Street, West Campbell Street, Blythswood Street, Douglas Street and Pitt Street, all between St Vincent Street and Waterloo Street. More details as 'Spider-Man 4' filming to shut Glasgow roads (Image: Newsquest) READ NEXT: Spider-Man 4 filming to take over Glasgow this summer Each day, the area will be locked down between 8am and 6pm. On the papers, the project is only referred to as a "feature film". Glasgow City Council and the officials from the London-based production company both said they would not be able to confirm which film will use the set. However, the phrase Blue Oasis has been spotted on the written notices, which was reportedly the working title for the newest Marvel film in the past. Officially, the production will now be called Brand New Day. This latest blockbuster is set to star Hollywood actor Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon. It is not known who will travel to Glasgow.

TV fans can now binge all 6 episodes of 'thrilling' action series
Warning: Spoilers for Ironheart, you have been warned… Looking for something to watch now you've binged The Bear and seen off Squid Game? Well, you're in luck! Six episodes of an incredible new action show are available to watch now on Disney Plus. The show is called Ironheart and it's the latest chapter in the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, if you're a fan of the MCU, you'll no doubt know what Ironheart is about, but if you're not up to date on what's happening on Earth-616, allow me to explain. Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart follows genius gadgeteer Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) as she teams up with the mysterious Parker Robbins (Anthony Ramos) in the hope of scraping together enough cash to build a new suit of Iron Man-style armour. However, Parker isn't what he seems, and before long, Riri finds herself torn between the mystical and the mechanical. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video When the series first dropped, there was an outpouring of celebration from fans who were thrilled by Riri's adventures. On Reddit, CharlesFluidSmith said, '[The] show is fantastic. Can say without hyperbole, it's my favourite Disney+ show.' AdRevolutionary4061 was similarly enthusiastic about Riri's adventures, posting 'Loving this show a ton already!', a feeling echoed by saintnick524, who wrote, 'This show is amazing!! I really enjoy it.' It was Xekshek33 who perhaps put it best, however, when they wrote: 'This show is a banger'. The delight wasn't exclusive to Reddit either. On X, @jjmastermind claimed: 'I'm hooked and there [are] only 3 episodes/one week left'. @captaincupkicks meanwhile said: 'I LOVED the first 3 episodes of #Ironheart! It's a gorgeous show with fun action, real stakes, and an exciting take on legacy… Can't wait to see the rest next week!' @KeyWatkins51299 felt similarly, adding: 'The first 3 episodes of #Ironheart were truly something iconic…This is a truly unique MCU series, and I am loving it so far. Can't wait for next week.' Metro's own Zac Haniff sat down with Ironheart executive producer Ryan Coogler to get the latest on the MCU … Everyone knows that the MCU is building to the Secret Wars, but Marvel Studios already has an eye on the future and the end of the Multiverse Saga. And do you know what's coming next? Why it's Marvel's merry mutants, the X-Men of course! More excitingly, plans are already in the works for the film with Ryan telling Metro that Jake Schreier (who just made Thunderbolts) will direct the X-Men reboot. Let's hope Ryan had permission from Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige to tell us that… Since then, however, the show's won over more and more fans, especially in the back half of the season, where Marvel finally introduced a highly anticipated villain. In the final episodes, we met the devilish Mephisto – the Marvel Universe's Satan stand-in – played by Sacha Baron Cohen, and it's fair to say he left one hell (pun intended) of an impression on viewers. 'Arghhh, Human Mephisto in Ironheart… this just became top 3 Marvel TV!!! #Ironheart,' wrote @Onlykayoo on X. [We're finally getting Mephisto,' added @tonisattorney. 'We're so back and I will be expecting a season 2.' More Trending Meanwhile, @paullydoughnuts declaredthat 'Ironheart was a good show, better than most of the shows they have been making… 100% better than WandaVision.' If that doesn't convince you to watch the show, you might be pleased to hear that Ironheart currently has a rather robust 86% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Sadly, the audience score is a lot lower at just 53% but it's worth noting the series was review-bombed before it was released, making that measure a little unreliable. The funniest comedy movie of all-time is returning to theaters this weekend
Comedy fans, turn your excitement to 11 and drummers prepare for spontaneous combustion: This Is Spinal Tap is coming back to theaters. The 1984 mockumentary, directed by Rob Reiner and starring Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer as the eponymous fictional hard-rock band, is being re-released this weekend in a 4K restoration in celebration of the movie's 41st anniversary. It's also a precursor to the long-awaited sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. A send-up of 1980s rock 'n' roll excess, This Is Spinal Tap was a modest success upon release but has since become one of the most celebrated comedy movies of all-time. It currently sits atop Time Out's list of the greatest comedy films ever made, and comes in at No. 78 on our ranking of the 100 best movies ever. 'Sporting arguably the most quotable script in movie history,' we wrote, 'and some of the meatiest metal melodies this side of Bon Scott-era AC/DC, this is simply a perfect film: from the first chord of Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight to the very final line ('I dunno, what are the hours?'), there's literally nothing about it that could be improved.' The restored and remastered version plays in theaters across America for a brief run, July 5-7. As for the sequel, Reiner, along with all the main cast members, are returning to chart the run-up to the band's farewell concert, which we're sure will go off without a hitch. Announced cameos include Elton John, Paul McCartney and Garth Brooks. It's set for worldwide release on September 12.
