Soap stars who flopped in America from shop assistant to one-hit wonder
Soap fans are celebrating the return of Michelle Ryan to EastEnders - back as gobby Zoe Slater after a 20-year gap. She left Walford in 2005 after landing the role of Jaime Sommers in the US remake of Bionic Woman.
The show was set to make her a huge US TV star, but sadly the 2007 show was axed after just one series.
Michelle, 41, is far from the only British star to be enjoying rebound soap success after following their acting dreams over the pond.

Patsy Palmer, EastEnders
Michelle's Albert Square colleague, famous for those yells of "Rickaaay!" as Bianca Butcher, headed to California in 2014 with her husband Richard Merkell and her four children.
But her career did not make as much headway out there, according to her IMDB entry, which cites a 2014 TV commercial for Best Buy and a UK short film in 2015, which starred her son Charley Palmer Rothwell, 33.
Patsy does have a very glamorous claim to LA fame though.
Her son Fenton Merkell, 25, dated supermodel Cindy Crawford's daughter Kaia Gerber, after they met as models.
But the allure of Bianca's Puffa jacket has proven too strong. Patsy, 53, has yo-yoed in and out of the BBC soap for years. She returned last year, staying until earlier this year, when she went on Celebrity Big Brother.
Rob Kazinsky, EastEnders
He played Sean Slater from 2006 until 2009, before landing his big break in vampire series True Blood in 2013, as Macklyn Warlow.
Rob, 41, then made the jump to the big screen in Pacific Rim (2013), Warcraft (2016) and Captain Marvel (2019). However it appears after time in the Marvel universe he was yearning for something more down to earth - as he headed back to EastEnders for a brief stint in 2019, and then made two more appearances in 2021 and 2022
Nikki Sanderson, Coronation Street
As mouthy hairdresser Candice, she was a favourite on the ITV soap from 1995 to 2005.
She tried her hand across the pond, with mixed results. Nikki, 41, did land a role in 2008 horror film Boogeyman 3, PRAISE but it went straight to DVD. Fast forward to 2012 and she joined the cast of Hollyoaks as Maxine Minniver, to great success.
She was praised for playing a domestic violence victim in one of the Channel 4 soap's most harrowing storylines. Nikki won the Inside Soap Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2023, before quitting the soap this year.
Rachel Shenton, Hollyoaks
She starred as Mitzeee Minniver for three years before leaving in 2013. She went on to appear in US series Switched at Birth from 2014 to 2017. The following year she won an Oscar for her short film The Silent Child, based on her own experiences as the child of a parent who became deaf.
Rachel, 37, now stars in the family friendly drama All Creatures Great and Small on 5, as James Herriot's love interest.
Adele Silva, Emmerdale
Aside from a five-year break from 2000, the actress was part of the furniture at the ITV soap - first appearing as Kelly
Windsor in 1993 aged 13. She tried to leave Kelly behind in 2007 and moved to the US, but struggled to find acting jobs, and in 2010 she was pictured working in a Ted Baker store in LA.
Adele came back to Emmerdale briefly before starring in 2012 comedy horror film Strippers vs Werewolves with Freddy Kruger actor Robert Englund.
Bagging more UK acting jobs rather than LA ones, Adele, 44, then headed to Hollyoaks for seven episodes in 2015, playing Leela Lomax's cousin, Angela Brown
Joshua Richards, Emmerdale
Joshua's career path is pretty unique as, unlike others soap rebounders, he was a Hollywood heavyweight who turned his back on Tinseltown to appear in soapland. More than two decades ago, Josh was starring with Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom and Peter O'Toole in 2004 blockbuster Troy. Josh, 65, also starred in 2017 film King Arthur: Excalibur Rising, before landing the role of Bear Wolf on Emmerdale.
It was a dream job, because he was desperate to work in Yorkshire, where he has lived for 30 years "and be home in time for my tea". But he also has some early soap pedigree, after appearing in an episode of Heartbeat back in 1999.

Himesh Patel, EastEnders
Himesh is one of biggest soap exports, and is now successful film actor since leaving his role as Tamwar Masood in EastEnders from 2007 to 2016.
He has appeared in the Beatles inspired 2019 movie Yesterday, Christopher Nolan film Tenet (2020), Don't Look Up (2021), and 2022. film Enola Holmes 2. Himesh, 34, is now filming Enola Holmes 3, as Dr John Watson.
Nathalie Emmanuel, Hollyoaks
Three years after leaving the Channel 4 soap, as Sasha Valentine, in 2010, she played the major role of Missandei in Game of Thrones until 2019.
She then appeared in 2022 horror film The Invitation, Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis last year, and Natalie, 36, also turned up in Fast & Furious seven, eight and nine.
Ben Hardy, EastEnders Shortly after leaving his role of Peter Beale, he was cast in 2016 film X-Men: Apocalypse, followed by Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), and Love at First Sight (2023).

Another EastEnders star makes permanent return after leaving soap 27 years ago
The legendary character is back in Albert Square for good, just weeks after it was confirmed that Jake Wood agreed to reprise his role as the iconic Max Branning in the show EastEnders legend Karen Henthorn has confirmed she is returning permanently to Albert Square, 27 years after her character was written out. The actress, who plays Julie Bates, follows Jake Wood as he makes a comeback on the show with his character Max Branning. Julie soft-launched her return in January, when her character was heard speaking on a voice note to her husband Nigel. Unbeknownst to Julie, Nigel, played by Paul Bradley, had been diagnosed with early-onset dementia. But instead of facing up to the reality of what had happened, he walked out on her 27 years after the family moved to Scotland to start a new life. Having told his long-standing pal Phil Mitchell that they had divorced, he moved back to Walford. But now his condition has started to deteriorate, Julie is set to go up against Phil as they decide on the best care option. Karen said of what's coming up for her character, almost three decades after she was last seen: "Even with the Phil situation, Julie knows that as long as she's with Nigel – and he knows how much she loves him – that's what matters. They are facing a hard road ahead, but they've got each other now. "Julie loves Nigel more than anyone else, and she'll go above and beyond to help him. Phil can be as difficult as he wants to Julie, she's not going anywhere." But things go south when Julie decides she wants to take Nigel back home to Scotland, leaving Phil furious. Karen explained that Julie is angry with the Mitchell brother, who has been dealing with health concerns of his own, as she wasn't told about her husband's diagnosis, and she believes Phil is trying to cut her out. Karen was first introduced to EastEnders fans in 1997, when she was the the adoptive stepmother of Clare Bates. Along with her son Josh Saunders, Karen and Nigel took off up north with their two children to start afresh. Back in January, Julie's voice made a shock cameo in the soap, when she was heard by viewers for the first time since the 90s. It came after it was revealed Nigel was lying to Phil - and he hadn't split up with Julie after all. He played a voice message, in which Julie could be heard saying: "Nigel, it's Julie again. I don't know if you got my last message or... Listen, Nigel, I promise I'm not cross, whatever reason you walked out and disappeared, I just really need to know if you're alright mate." Karen previously spoke of her delight at being reunited with her on-screen hubby, played by Paul Bradley. She said: "It's very surreal to be back in Albert Square after 27 years and working with the delightful Paul Bradley again - it's scary how fast the time has gone!" "Julie has got some awful surprises ahead of her after the initial relief she feels to discover Nigel is still alive," she continued. "It's been great to film with Paul and Steve (McFadden), who are such lovely actors, as Julie discovers Nigel's dementia diagnosis and why he chose to hide it from her.' Speaking about Julie's return to the Square, Executive Producer Ben Wadey said: 'We are delighted to have Karen Henthorn returning to reprise her role as Julie, who arrives looking for Nigel. Julie hasn't seen Nigel in almost two years and is unaware of his diagnosis and reasons for leaving, so her arrival will pose questions for the pair of them.'

Wimbledon presenter Clare Balding has become one of the UK's most popular broadcasters over the past two decades, while her private life has also become the subject of much intrigue Clare Balding is once again in the thick of things this summer as she leads the BBC's Wimbledon coverage. With three decades of experience under her belt, Balding has become one of the most recognised and respected faces on British television. She has previously fronted the BBC's coverage of high-profile sporting events such as the Olympics, Grand National and the Commonwealth Games. This evening, she will be at the forefront of the broadcaster's coverage of SW19, where Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner will face off in the men's final. Given Balding 's rise in prominence, there has naturally been an increased interest in her personal life, with her romantic relationships and occasional controversies attracting public attention. And we will now look to provide an in-depth insight into Balding's world beyond the cameras. Who is Clare Balding married to? Balding met her wife, fellow presenter Alice Arnold, in 1999 while they were both working for the BBC. Initially close friends, their romantic relationship began in 2002 when a national publication disclosed Balding's sexuality to the public. Balding has had relationships with men in the past and was even proposed to by one of her former boyfriends. She turned down the proposal and has no regrets about it, later learning that he went on to "behave appallingly". "I had a few boyfriends, not like loads. But I had one very serious boyfriend for two or three years," she explained. "He asked me to marry him and he was in the Army and he was going off. And I thought 'he's only asking me because he thinks he's in danger and, according to romantic films, I'm meant to say yes at this point'. "I knew I didn't want to. I said 'Look, that's a lovely thing to say but ask me again when you come back'. When he came back he didn't ask me again, and I thought ''Thank God''. I thought 'I don't trust you and I'll never trust you' - and funnily enough I was absolutely spot on as his ex-wife told me not that long ago." She continued: "That relationship ended not very well with him behaving appallingly. I think I was damaged by that, but that doesn't make you gay. I just think when I first fell in love with a woman it was completely different." Cancer diagnosis In 2009, Balding shared her thyroid cancer diagnosis. The presenter spotted the warning signs, including a noticeable lump on her neck, while viewing herself on screen - symptoms which can encompass a lingering sore throat and trouble swallowing. After undergoing surgery to remove a cyst, her thyroid gland and a lymph node, she was treated with radioactive iodine to halt the cancer's spread. Despite concerns over the potential impact on her voice and career, she fortunately received the all-clear by the end of 2010. Discussing her experience, Balding said: "I had to have a little operation just before Christmas to take out a nasty little lymph node and there was a worry that I might have to have more treatment." She also shared some positive news: "But I had a lovely letter from my oncologist just after Christmas saying, 'Hurrah, no more treatment', so I'm very happy about that. 2011 is going to be a good one." Looking back on her battle, she admitted going through a "dark stage" because of her health struggles but came out with a renewed outlook on life, admitting: "When I recovered, my attitude to life changed. I feel happy most days, grateful for all I have." Broadcasting controversies Despite being one of Britain's esteemed presenters, Balding found herself embroiled in controversy during the 2024 Paris Olympics coverage. During a chat with former Olympic swimming champion Rebecca Adlington on air, Balding was surprised to learn no Olympic athletes had visited Adlington's school in her youth, which led to accusations of classism from viewers. The topic arose when pundit Mark Foster spoke about being "inspired" by meeting Duncan Goodhew at his swimming club as a child. Having asked if Adlington had a similar encounter, she answered: "To be fair, I didn't have somebody like that," to which a clearly astonished Balding, who had a private education, asked: "No one came to your school?!" Her remark sparked indignation among some viewers, with one commenting: "Of course Balding thought it TOTALLY NORMAL for Olympic medal winners to visit schools - because being privately educated and descended from nobility and privilege, this kind of thing is part of the cultural experience they expect." However, Balding's BBC colleague Gabby Logan came to her defence. She responded to a critical comment with: "I'm sure lots of what you say may be true about private school experiences, but it's certainly not true about the whole of the BBC. I went to a state school nobody visited, teachers were striking in the 80's, and no school trips. NB 'Speakers for Schools' is great charity." Logan added "Also to be clear I love my colleague and she's a great broadcaster. But a sweeping statement about the BBC needed addressing. It wasn't Balding's first encounter with public outrage. He hasn't got the best teeth in the world, but you can afford to go and get them done now if you like."
