In the early hours everyday, pickup trucks, tractors, small vans and horse carts loaded with fruit boxes head towards Mazbough village in Sopore where Asia's second largest mandi is located.
The back to back rainfall in July has given growers a good hope for not only bumper fruit crops but also best quality apples. As per data of meteorological department, Kashmir has received normal to excess rainfall especially in the belts producing quality apples.
The July month is considered a very important time for fruit development, the rainfall has not only given magnificent colour to different early varieties of apples but has also ripened the harvest. 'When there was a heatwave in June we were staring at a very messy situation. But we were hopeful after the first rainfall and were expecting a bumper crop. Across Kashmir apple orchards have good fruit even the high density apples have good yield this season,' said Sahib Ahmad Khan who owns several orchards in north Kashmir. He said right now, besides two to three early varieties like Hazratbali and red delicious apples, three to four varieties of high density apples, are also being harvested across Kashmir. 'Right from the start the market locally as well outside mandies is very good,' he said.
Sopore fruit mandi president Fayaz Ahmad Malik said that 40 to 50 apple trucks are being loaded from the mandi every day. 'Even dozens of trucks are also being dispatched from other mandies of the Valley. So far the market is good and it's because the fruit quality is good due to timely rainfall,' he said adding that now with every passing day more and more trucks will arrive in the mandies and by next month 300 to 400 fruit trucks will be dispatched across the country. 'We hope this year growers will make good profit.'
Kashmir is India's largest apple-producing region, fetching revenue of over ₹8,000 to ₹10,000 crore to the Union territory, and contributing around 8-10% of its gross domestic product. The UT produces around 20 lakh metric tonnes of apples per year. Around seven lakh farming families (approximately 35 lakh people) are directly or indirectly associated with the horticulture sector. 'The season has already started. First it was stone fruits and cherries, now different apple varieties are arriving in the mandis. The markets are promising and prospects also look good. Hopefully things will remain the same incoming months,' said Javeed Ahmad Dar, a grower from south Kashmir.
This year stone fruit and cherries also fetched good prices despite early spring weather vagaries.

National Waterway-57 operationalised on Assam's Kopili river, maiden cargo flagged off

The first cargo trial run occurred from Govardhan Bridge to Hatsingimari. MV VV Giri carried 300 metric tonnes of cement. Minister Sarbananda Sonowal called it a watershed moment. This resumes intra-state waterborne freight transport after a decade. Over 1168 kms of National Waterways in Assam are now operational. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Guwahati: In a historic step towards the revival of Assam's river-based trade and sustainable logistics, National Waterway-57 (River Kopili) was operationalised with the first-ever cargo trial run from the Govardhan Bridge in Chandrapur, Kamrup to Hatsingimari in South movement marks the resumption of intra-state waterborne freight transport in Assam after more than a decade. The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal underlined this development as a 'watershed moment' for Inland Waterways Transport in Assam and the cargo vessel MV VV Giri, equipped with self-loading capacity, carried 300 metric tonnes of cement from M/s Star Cement along the 300-kilometre route on the Kopili River (NW 57) and Brahmaputra river (NW 2), with a voyage time of approximately 12 to 14 hours. With this development, more than 1168 kms of National Waterways in Assam has become operational, confirmed Sarbananda the development as a breakthrough in Assam's logistics transformation, Sonowal, said, 'This is a watershed moment for Assam. With the operationalisation of NW-57 on River Kopili, we are not only reviving a lost artery of trade within the state, but also taking a major step towards building an inland water transport system that is economical, efficient, and environmentally sustainable. For far too long, the rich inter web of riverine transportation remained neglected post independence. Today, with the resumption of cargo movement on four National Waterways of Assam — on Brahmaputra (NW 2), Barak (NW 16), Dhansiri (NW31) & Kopili (NW 57) — we have made 1168 kms of waterways operational, offering a reasonable, economic and effective alternative mode of transportation. This will not only decongest our roads but also bring economies of scale for our many riverine communities in Assam to prosper and secure opportunities.''Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, the Government of India has placed a strong focus on revitalising our inland waterways to create multimodal logistics corridors. Assam is an important state in this regard as IWAI, the nodal agency of our ministry, is working on multiple projects to unlock value across our river ways. From Brahmaputra to Barak, from Dhansiri to now Kopili, this is only the beginning to power the growth of the region with empowered inland waterways. Reviving waterways like the Kopili is a direct contribution to Modiji's vision of a thriving and self-reliant Northeast,' Sarbananda Sonowal Union Minister noted, 'By shifting freight movement from road to waterways, we reduce emissions, ease road congestion, and lower logistics costs — all while making better use of our natural resources. Today's trial run replaces roughly 23 truckloads of cement — that's the power and potential of inland water transport.'This is the first cargo trial movement on the 46 kms long NW-57 since 2014, making it a turning point in the revival of intra-state cargo through Assam's river systems. The operationalisation of this route is in line with the Maritime India Vision 2030 and PM Gati Shakti, which aim to establish sustainable, integrated, and efficient transport infrastructure across the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, has been proactively working on unlocking the navigational potential of rivers across the Northeast — including the Brahmaputra (NW-2), Barak (NW-16), Dhansiri (NW-31) and now Kopili (NW-57).Sonowal further emphasised, 'The Kopili cargo movement is a symbol of the new Assam — connected, empowered, and aligned with India's growth story. We are determined to build on this success and scale up cargo and passenger movement across all our major rivers. Waterways are not just a mode of transport; they are the arteries of regional prosperity.'

AP roads to be on par with those in US in two years: Gadkari

Mangalagiri: Roads in Andhra Pradesh would 'compete' with those in the United States of America in the next two years, Union Minister for Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari declared on Saturday. He was addressing a meeting with Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu in the chair, after laying the foundation stone for 27 road development projects and dedicating two completed projects to the nation here. The two major road projects which he dedicated to the country include the upgradation of Madanapalle-Pileru stretch of NH 71 into a modern four-lane corridor. This 56 km highway was built at a cost of Rs 1,994 crore The second major project was the upgradation of a 31 km stretch from Kurnool on NH 340C to Mandlem at a cost of Rs 858 crore. These projects will link Andhra Pradesh more closely with Telangana, Karnataka, Odisha and Tamil Nadu. The Union Minister said identified four important things needed for the development of any country: water, power, transportation and communication. In his capacity as the head of the Ministry of Transportation, he assured the people of Andhra Pradesh that he would do his best to improve transportation across the state. Quoting former president of the USA John F Kennedy, he said that 'roads were good in America not just because America was great, but America was great because roads were good.' Stating that the cost of the logistics was important for the development of the country, Gadkari said that he was confident that the cost of the logistics would come down in the country to 9 per cent in near future. The Union Minister highlighted the importance of ethanol -- made of molasses, bagasse and even paddy straw -- which would help bring down the cost of logistics. He appreciated Andhra Pradesh government's focus on generating green hydrogen and green energy. He appealed to the Chief Minister to continue focus on green hydrogen and offered all possible help in that direction. He asserted that he was not a mere man of words, but man of action. Gadkari announced that the Vijayawada-Hyderabad road would be developed into six-lane. He said that an expressway would be built between Hyderabad and Vijayawada to make it possible to cover the distance in two hours. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, addressing the gathering, thanked the Union Minister for his support for developing roads across the state. Under the guidance and leadership of Gadkari, everyday 37 km of road was being constructed across the country, the Chief Minister said. He was confident that the Union Minister would make it possible in future for building 50 km of road per day. Earlier, Union Ministers K Ramamohan Naidu and Bhupatiraju Srinivas Varma and Deputy Chief minister Pawan Kalyan, Ministers, Satyakumar Yadav and BC Janardhana Reddy, and others also spoke.
