Telangana allows employees in commercial establishments to work up to 10 hours a day, 48 hours a week, under the Telangana Shops and Establishments Act, 1988, effective July 8.
The Telangana government has issued orders allowing employees in commercial establishments (excluding shops) to work up to 10 hours per day, with a cap of 48 hours per week, to boost the ease of doing business.
The government order issued by the Labour, Employment, Training & Factories Department on July 5 stated that the exemption is made under the Telangana Shops and Establishments Act, 1988 (Act No. 20 of 1988).
According to the notification, such establishments are to be exempt from Sections 16 and 17 of the Act, which relate to working hours and rest intervals, subject to specific conditions.
The official order suggested that the daily work hours should not exceed 10 hours, and the weekly limit must not exceed 48 hours. Work done beyond these limits will qualify for overtime wages.
The order also stated that the employees working over six hours a day are entitled to a minimum 30-minute break, and their total work and rest hours shouldn't exceed 12 hours in 24 hours.
Employees can work beyond the standard 48 hours per week, but only up to 144 hours of overtime in a quarter, and they must receive overtime pay for the extra hours worked. If companies fail to comply with these regulations, they risk losing the exemptions granted to them.

A, B-Khata regulations get stamp under Great Bengaluru Governance Act

BENGALURU: The State government on Friday issued an order, approving regulations for issuing A- and B-Khata for properties under Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). Once BBMP ceases to exist and Great Bengaluru Governance (GBG) Act comes into effect, properties constructed after September 30, 2024, will not be given B-Khata. The move aims to bring nearly 6 lakh properties under the Greater Bengaluru Authority/BBMP tax ambit. The order empowers the administration to even declare a private road connecting vacant land as 'public land', under Section 212 of the GBG Act. The order also makes it clear that any property on land under Revenue Survey Number/Hissa Survey and yet to be converted for non-agricultural purpose, may not require the Deputy Commissioner's approval, provided the land falls under the Revised Master Plan for Bengaluru. The fee for conversion is to be paid to the authority. After conversion, vacant land under Karnataka Country and Town Planning Act (KCTP), 1961, can be treated as a single plot/layout and the sites given A-Khata as per GBG Act. After relevant approval under Section 17 and 15 of the KCTP Act, owners can seek building plan approvals, commencement certificates and occupancy certificates. The order states that properties which already have B-Khata will have to follow the same rules. However, if there is any violation, they cannot go ahead with construction.

To make city slum-free, all slums to be surveyed by year-end

Mumbai: The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) is working on completing the survey of all slums in the city by the end of this year, with an eye on creating a reliable databank for future slum rehabilitation projects and curbing the emergence of new, illegal slum settlements. The survey, incorporating biometric details of slum residents and Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping, will help make Mumbai slum-free, said officials. (Hindustan Times) 'We have set a target of completing the survey of all slums in Mumbai by December 31,' said Dr Mahendra Kalyankar, chief executive officer, SRA. The authority will rope in specialised agencies over and above two agencies it currently relies on to complete the work on time, he added. The decision to finish the survey this year was taken during a review meeting chaired by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on June 12, wherein he directed officials to accelerate the exercise. The SRA had, via a drone survey in 2021, identified 2,597 slum clusters across Mumbai, which were differentiated into 13,79,086 slum settlements. Till Thursday, Pioneer Foundation Private Limited and Saar IT Resources Private Limited – two agencies which conduct surveys on behalf of the SRA – had conducted door-to-door surveys in 5,75,136 slum settlements while another 8,03,950 slum settlements remained to be surveyed. 'Since over 8 lakh slums have to be surveyed in about five months, we will appoint more agencies by floating a tender,' said an SRA official. Around 1.4 lakh of the settlements that remain to be surveyed are located on plots owned by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and both agencies are conducting separate surveys as well, the official mentioned. 'Once completed, our survey will provide comprehensive information about all slums in the city and prevent any new addition,' the SRA official told HT. Slums that spring up after the survey can be identified easily, which will help in initiating punitive action, he said. 'It will also prevent any attempt by developers to add fake tenants in SRA projects,' he added. According to the Maharashtra Slum Areas (Improvement Clearance and Redevelopment) Act, 1971, residents of slums built until January 1, 2000 must be provided free rehabilitation tenements when they are evicted. In May 2018, during Devendra Fadnavis' first term as chief minister, the cut-off date for rehabilitation was extended to January 1, 2011, but it was mandated that those residing in slums built between 2001 and 2011 would not be eligible for free rehabilitation, following a Supreme Court decision.
