To make city slum-free, all slums to be surveyed by year-end
'We have set a target of completing the survey of all slums in Mumbai by December 31,' said Dr Mahendra Kalyankar, chief executive officer, SRA. The authority will rope in specialised agencies over and above two agencies it currently relies on to complete the work on time, he added.
The decision to finish the survey this year was taken during a review meeting chaired by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on June 12, wherein he directed officials to accelerate the exercise.
The SRA had, via a drone survey in 2021, identified 2,597 slum clusters across Mumbai, which were differentiated into 13,79,086 slum settlements.
Till Thursday, Pioneer Foundation Private Limited and Saar IT Resources Private Limited – two agencies which conduct surveys on behalf of the SRA – had conducted door-to-door surveys in 5,75,136 slum settlements while another 8,03,950 slum settlements remained to be surveyed.
'Since over 8 lakh slums have to be surveyed in about five months, we will appoint more agencies by floating a tender,' said an SRA official.
Around 1.4 lakh of the settlements that remain to be surveyed are located on plots owned by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and both agencies are conducting separate surveys as well, the official mentioned.
'Once completed, our survey will provide comprehensive information about all slums in the city and prevent any new addition,' the SRA official told HT.
Slums that spring up after the survey can be identified easily, which will help in initiating punitive action, he said. 'It will also prevent any attempt by developers to add fake tenants in SRA projects,' he added.
According to the Maharashtra Slum Areas (Improvement Clearance and Redevelopment) Act, 1971, residents of slums built until January 1, 2000 must be provided free rehabilitation tenements when they are evicted. In May 2018, during Devendra Fadnavis' first term as chief minister, the cut-off date for rehabilitation was extended to January 1, 2011, but it was mandated that those residing in slums built between 2001 and 2011 would not be eligible for free rehabilitation, following a Supreme Court decision.

NMC to spend Rs2,100cr on resurfacing 61 major roads
Nashik: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to undertake a Rs2,100 crore initiative to resurface as many as 61 major roads throughout the city. This large-scale infrastructure project is for the upcoming Kumbh Mela , which the city is set to host between 2026 and 2028. The road development will happen in three phases. The first phase will cover 23 major roads, including sections of Nashik's existing inner, middle, and outer ring roads. They are vital as they connect to national and state highways, particularly in the Panchavati, Nashik Road, and Nashik East divisions. The civic body also plans to widen some of these roads where possible. The second phase will see development of 29 roads, including the significant Shahi Marg. And the third phase will involve re-laying of nine roads. This extensive upgrade of the road network aims to significantly improve connectivity and infrastructure, preparing the city for the large number of devotees expected for the Kumbh Mela. Nashik is one of four cities that hosts Kumbh Mela every 12 years. The last Mela was held in 2015. "We will require around Rs373 crore for developing the road network by March 2026. The remaining amount will be required in phases during the next financial year," the official said. "The civic administration has prepared a Rs15,000-crore plan for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela and submitted it to state govt for approval. Of the total amount, the public works department has proposed Rs4,000 crore for road works, construction of nine bridges, and other works," the official added. During the recent meetings, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis instructed the NMC and other authorities concerned to undertake those works which will need around two years for completion. Accordingly, the NMC completed the tender process and finalised a private agency for the construction of sewage treatment plants, sewage pumping stations and diversion of sewage from the 22 nullahs towards nearby STPs. The total cost of these sewage management works is around Rs1,475 crore. The civic body also started the tender process for the construction of the five bridges and strengthening of the Gadge Maharaj bridge. Apart from the STPs and bridges, the NMC has also prioritised road works.

Govt approves GIS-based master plan of 56 out of 59 UP cities
Lucknow: The geographical information system-based (GIS) master plan for 56, out of 59 cities in the state, have been approved for implementation by the state govt. Only Kanpur, Rampur, and Ghaziabad are yet to get their master plan approved. With the objective of developing common digital geo-referenced base maps and land use maps across the Amrut cities, senior officials of the housing department will be able to view the thematic maps and sector-wise database. "By processing geospatial data, those involved in urban planning of a town are able to understand development strategy, transportation nodes, physiography, linkages, regional setting, among other salient characteristics of a city," said a senior officer from the housing department. Officials said that the final review of the Ghaziabad and Kanpur master plans is going to be held in a fortnight, after which approval is expected to be granted to the two housing development authorities to enforce it within the notified area. The master plan for Rampur will be taken up in a few weeks, the officer added. The state govt set a deadline of Dec 31 last year for the 59 cities to get their master plans approved. However, over time, the scope of the consultants engaged to prepare the plans was broadened to include city logistics plans, demarcate transit-oriented zones, green and blue corridors, transportation and mobility plans onto the GIS platform, among others. "Amending the scope of the original work assigned to the companies and urban planners resulted in some delay while finalising the plans," said an officer.
