The Amir Cup quarter-finals begin on Tuesday with Al Ahli taking on second division challengers Al Shahania, while in the late kickoff, in-form Umm Salal face ambitious Al Shamal.
Tomorrow promises fireworks as giants Al Sadd meet Al Gharafa, followed by a blockbuster clash between Al Rayyan and Al Duhail.
Al Ahli coach Igor Biscan underlined the importance of defensive concentration in knockout football as he targets a place in the semi-finals of Qatar's most prestigious domestic tournament.
'Our team has a good offensive level, but at the same time we are required to focus on our defense because Emir Cup matches require us to approach them differently than we used to in league matches,' Biscan said.
'We must treat every match as if it were a final. We need to double our efforts and give our best against Al Shahania, as cup matches are full of intense rivalry and competition, with each team striving to win and qualify.'
Al Shahania coach Jose Murcia stressed calm and confidence ahead of his side's challenge as underdogs. 'We are taking the Amir Cup championship one step at a time,' Murcia said. 'The match requires intense focus because cup matches are very different from league matches, and mistakes are prohibited.
'Our players are aware of the responsibility placed upon them. We are looking forward to winning and reaching the semi-finals—even if the predictions are in Al Ahli's favour. We are not under pressure and must focus on ourselves and perform at our best.'
Umm Salal coach Patrice Beaumelle is keeping his players grounded after a run of strong results as they prepare to face Al Shamal at Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium. 'The Al Shamal match is very important for us, and we will approach it calmly and with focus, without any pressure,' the Frenchman said.
'Our victory over Al Wakrah gave the players a huge morale boost, and I'm happy to have achieved four consecutive wins. But every tournament has its own character, and the Emir Cup is a precious tournament.
'We respect Al Shamal a lot—they're a distinguished team. Our focus is on how we perform. We have a good attack, but we need more defensive discipline. Cup matches are full of excitement and enthusiasm, so we have to put in extra effort. Mistakes are prohibited, and our players are fully aware of their responsibility.'
Al Shamal coach David Prats, meanwhile, is urging his squad to make history. 'I expect it to be a great match in a very important tournament that is dear to the hearts of all participants,' Prats said.
'This is the first time in Al Shamal's history that we've reached the quarter-finals, and we have a great opportunity to continue writing history by competing for a semi-final place. We aim to enjoy the match without pressure and perform at our best.
'We've already played Umm Salal twice this season, but the Emir Cup is a different competition. We must be extremely focused. We will play with a full squad, and we hope to create a surprise. We are ready to fight and compete strongly to go as far as possible.'

Hamilton and Verstappen say Grand Prix should not have been suspended

PA Media/DPA Spa-Francorchamps Lewis Hamilton said he agreed with Max Verstappen that the start of the Belgian Grand Prix should not have been suspended. Verstappen branded race director Rui Marques' move to bring out the red flag after a single formation lap in the rain at Spa-Francorchamps as 'silly' and 'way too cautious.' Following a delay of one hour and 20 minutes - which the FIA said was due to 'poor visibility' - the race eventually got under way, albeit in a rolling start after four laps behind the safety car. Hamilton was able to switch from intermediates to dry tyres after just seven racing laps. And when it was put to Hamilton, who made up 11 places to finish seventh, that Verstappen claimed the race should have started immediately, he replied: 'I would agree. My car was set up for that, and they waited for it to dry. Especially at the end. It was a dry line with hardly any spray.' There have been 49 driver/rider fatalities at Spa-Francorchamps in the last 100 years - most recently Dutch 18-year-old Dilano Van 't Hoff in 2023, and Frenchman Anthonie Hubert in a Formula Two race four years previously. The last Formula One race at Silverstone also took place in wet conditions, and Hamilton, 40, continued: 'It was just a reaction to Silverstone. We sat down and spoke about it after Silverstone. Lots of drivers in the last race said we shouldn't have restarted, because of a lack of visibility. And as soon as someone up ahead said, 'visibility is pretty bad' which, it wasn't great but it wasn't as bad as the last race, they just decided to wait. 'They still did a good job. Of course we did miss some of the extreme wet weather racing, which would have been nice. But for some reason the spray here is like a fog.' In 2021, the rain-hit race was abandoned after just two laps behind the safety car. Defending the decision to delay the start of Sunday's event, Hamilton's Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc said: 'On a track like this you cannot forget about the history and what has happened in the past so I would rather be safe than go early.' Oscar Piastri, who won in Belgium to extend his championship lead over Lando Norris to 16 points, continued: 'We have given the FIA feedback that we would much rather be on the safe side. 'If you were being picky you might say we could have done one fewer lap behind the safety car but is the risk worth it? 'The first time we tried to start the race, with only Lando ahead, I couldn't see a thing, so you can imagine what it is like for the guys at the back.'

Frankfurt's Ekitike heading to Liverpool for $110 mn: Reports

dpa Frankfurt Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike is set to join Liverpool in another big-money transfer, according to media reports. The 23-year-old Frenchman will move to the English champions with immediate effect, TV broadcaster Sky Germany and transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on Sunday. The transfer fee is said to be around 95 million euros [$110.4 million), with Ekitike is signing a six-year contract with the Reds. The two clubs have yet to confirm the transfer. Ekitiké would become Liverpool's next major signing from the Bundesliga this close season, following the acquisitions of Germany playmaker Florian Wirtz and Dutch wing back Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen. The death of Diogo Jota, uncertainty over Darwin Nunez's future and Bayern Munich's pursuit of Luis Diaz appear to have prompted Liverpool to continue their massive spending spree. Ekitiké would be the latest big-money sale by savvy Frankfurt. Earlier this year, the club sold striker Omar Marmoush to Manchester City for 75 million euros. Nearly two years ago, forward Kolo Muani was transferred to Paris Saint-Germain for 95 million euros. Ekitike joined Eintracht Frankfurt from PSG at the start of 2024, initially on loan, before being permanently signed last year for a reported ?16.5 million. In the past season, he contributed 22 goals and 12 assists across all competitions. Liverpool's league rivals Newcastle United had also shown interest in Ekitiké. The reported deal once again highlights the negotiating skills of Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krösche, whose side finished third in the German top flight last term but must now deal with more squad upheaval. As a potential replacement for Ekitike, Germany international Jonathan Burkardt has already been signed from local rivals Mainz - for just 23 million euros.
