Broncos invite former Saints QB Ian Book for rookie minicamp tryout
The book isn't shut on this former New Orleans Saints quarterback. 9News Denver's Mike Klis reports that Ian Book, a fourth-round pick by the Saints back in 2021 out of Notre Dame, is replacing former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder as a veteran free agent tryout at this weekend's rookie minicamp.
Book, 27, flamed out quickly in New Orleans after injuries and COVID-19 absences forced him into the lineup as a rookie. He completed 12 of 20 passes for 135 yards and threw two interceptions in a prime-time loss to the Miami Dolphins, and was waived after training camp the next summer. But he wrote a new chapter with the Philadelphia Eagles and went on to spend time with the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs, ultimately returning to Philly just in time to back up Jalen Hurts and win a championship ring in the Eagles' Super Bowl LIX win over the Chiefs.
Now he's auditioning for Sean Payton and the Broncos. Payton made the call to draft Book in the first place, so now Book may have a real shot. He'll compete with fellow tryout QB Blake Stenstrom for a shot at a roster spot behind Bo Nix, Jarrett Stidham, and Sam Ehlinger. Good luck to him as he turns to the next page of his story.

When the veteran tight end Chris Manhertz played with Russell Wilson for the first time, the national narrative surrounding the veteran quarterback was tanking faster than ever. Once known as a top passer in the game for the Seattle Seahawks, Wilson's Denver Broncos era was throwing dirt on a lot of his accomplishments. The situation simply wasn't ideal for the veteran passer. On March 4, 2024, Wilson was released by the Broncos. During his lone season in Denver, Manhertz appeared in 16 games with the Broncos. He caught two passes for 16 yards. After that, he signed with the New York Giants for the 2024 NFL season. Meanwhile, Russell Wilson picked up a season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Wilson appeared in 11 games for the Steelers in 2024. He threw for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions. The Steelers accomplished a 6-5 record during that time. Pittsburgh bounced early, and Wilson was back on the free agency market, looking for a new team. It's become clear that Wilson might not have been the Giants' first option. That hasn't left the veteran passer bitter, viewing the situation in a different light. Wilson is embracing his upcoming season with the Giants and making sure his leadership tactics are top-notch. Recently, Manhertz opened up about it to the New York Post. "It's kind of contagious to be around him and see how he works and how he carries himself. It's great work, and it's necessary work leading up to training camp. It's all business on the field, and Russ is all business." Wilson earned plenty of praise from coaches and teammates throughout OTAs and minicamp for his performance and leadership. Ahead of training camp, the quarterback helped host many of his teammates, including quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends, out in San Diego to work out and bond before they reach their next phase of full-team preparation. Being that Manhertz was around for New York's three-win run in 2024, he can spot the differences. "I think it feels different this year in a good way," the veteran added. "The leadership is a lot better." So far, all seems well for the Giants' Russell Wilson stint. They will soon have a chance to show if it can all be put together and result in victories. Broncos' Bo Nix Receives Eye-Opening Take From Former NFL QB

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Denver Broncos made a strong run during the 2024 NFL season. Led by rookie quarterback Bo Nix, the Broncos were one of the biggest surprises in the league and made it all the way to the playoffs and finished the regular season with a 10-7 record. While they lost in the Wild Card round to the Buffalo Bills, the future looks incredibly bright for Denver. Nix lived up to the hype that surrounded him entering his first season. He not only played well, but was the clear-cut leader for the team. Bo Nix #10 of the Denver Broncos celebrates after a touchdown against the Buffalo Bills during the first quarter during the AFC Wild Card Playoffs at Highmark Stadium on January 12, 2025 in Orchard Park, New York. More PhotoHeading into his second NFL season, Nix is not being slept on. Now that the league knows what he's capable of, the expectations are beginning to rise. Read more: Late Offseason Warning Could Spark Broncos' Next Roster Move Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III has now spoken out about Nix. He is clearly expecting a big second season from the former Oregon standout. In a post on X, Griffin did not hold back about his opinion of Nix. "After watching all of his film from last year, Bo Nix is the most underrated QB in the NFL," Griffin said. Griffin may very well be right. Nix isn't talked about as a top quarterback in the NFL yet, but he might become that kind of player during the 2025 campaign. As a rookie in 2024, Nix played in all 17 regular season games. He completed 66.3 percent of his pass attempts for 3,775 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, while also running for 430 yards and four more touchdowns. Playing for a head coach like Sean Payton is a young quarterback's dream. The work that Payton put in with legendary quarterback Drew Brees is very well known. It will be interesting to see what Nix is able to do when facing higher expectations. He still has a talented offseason around him, although there are some who believe the Broncos should still target another weapon for the second-year quarterback. Regardless of what happens in the 2025 NFL season, Denver has a franchise quarterback on the roster. Hopefully, he's able to take the next step and the Broncos are able to not just make the playoffs, but also win a playoff game or more.
