When the veteran tight end Chris Manhertz played with Russell Wilson for the first time, the national narrative surrounding the veteran quarterback was tanking faster than ever.
Once known as a top passer in the game for the Seattle Seahawks, Wilson's Denver Broncos era was throwing dirt on a lot of his accomplishments. The situation simply wasn't ideal for the veteran passer. On March 4, 2024, Wilson was released by the Broncos.
During his lone season in Denver, Manhertz appeared in 16 games with the Broncos. He caught two passes for 16 yards. After that, he signed with the New York Giants for the 2024 NFL season. Meanwhile, Russell Wilson picked up a season with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Some healing was done out in Pennsylvania, but not enough to feel satisfied or build a long-term home. Wilson appeared in 11 games for the Steelers in 2024. He threw for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions. The Steelers accomplished a 6-5 record during that time.

Russell Wilson #3 of the Pittsburgh Steelers warms up prior to the game against the Baltimore Ravens during the AFC Wild Card Playoff at M&T Bank Stadium on January 11, 2025 in Baltimore, Maryland. When they went to the playoffs, Wilson threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns in the Wild Card matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, but it wasn't enough. Pittsburgh bounced early, and Wilson was back on the free agency market, looking for a new team.
It's become clear that Wilson might not have been the Giants' first option. That hasn't left the veteran passer bitter, viewing the situation in a different light. Wilson is embracing his upcoming season with the Giants and making sure his leadership tactics are top-notch. Recently, Manhertz opened up about it to the New York Post.

"As a player, Russ is as detailed as it gets," Manhertz told the New York Post. "It's kind of contagious to be around him and see how he works and how he carries himself. It's great work, and it's necessary work leading up to training camp. It's all business on the field, and Russ is all business."
Wilson earned plenty of praise from coaches and teammates throughout OTAs and minicamp for his performance and leadership. Ahead of training camp, the quarterback helped host many of his teammates, including quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends, out in San Diego to work out and bond before they reach their next phase of full-team preparation.
Being that Manhertz was around for New York's three-win run in 2024, he can spot the differences.
"I think it feels different this year in a good way," the veteran added. "The leadership is a lot better."
So far, all seems well for the Giants' Russell Wilson stint. They will soon have a chance to show if it can all be put together and result in victories.

Cooper Kupp congratulates Cal Raleigh on his Home Run Derby victory

For the first time in the history of baseball, a catcher has won the Home Run Derby... and he is a Seattle Mariner! On Monday night, Cal Raleigh's historic season just became a little more iconic with the Big Dumper earning a Home Run Derby championship, becoming the first Mariner since Ken Griffey Jr. did so three times during the 1990's. Raleigh barely - and quite literally - inched out Brent Rooker in round one, having hit tiebreaking ball 0.08 inches further than the Athletics' star. Raleigh then created insurmountable leads in the semifinal and championship round against Oneil Cruz of the Pirates and Junior Caminero of the Rays to win it all. Of course, Raleigh's neighbors to the north, the Seattle Seahawks, certainly noticed his historic performance. However, the Seahawks franchise was not the only ones to celebrate the Big Dumper's achievement. Fellow Seattle sports figure Cooper Kupp took to Twitter as well to praise the American League MVP contender. Cal Raleigh, and the Mariners, will be back in action this coming Friday night for a crucial divisional series against the loathsome Houston Astros. Seattle (51-45) is five games back of Houston for first place in the AL West, and are holding a 1.5 lead over the Tampa Bay Rays for the final Wild Card spot. The Mariners have an opportunity to make up some serious ground on the Astros, and will need every home run Raleigh can deliver this weekend.

Broncos' projected starting defense before training camp

Denver Broncos rookies are set to report for training camp on Wednesday, followed by the arrival of veterans on July 22 and the start of camp on July 25. With training camp now less than two weeks away, it's a good time to review the state of the roster. We'll get to the projected starting offense next week, but this week, the focus is on Vance Joseph's side of the ball. Denver's defense made three big additions this offseason by signing linebacker Dre Greenlaw and safety Talanoa Hufanga during free agency before later using a first-round draft pick to select cornerback Jahdae Barron. Following those additions, here's our quick projection of the starting defense going into training camp. Note that this is just a projection, not an official depth chart from the team. The Broncos won't won't be required to release a depth chart until preseason begins in August. Broncos starting defense (and backups) You'll notice that the projected "starting" lineup includes 12 players because the Broncos will spend plenty of time in a nickel package, so a third cornerback is included above. It remains to be seen if Barron will end up playing primarily in the slot or as an outside cornerback (it's also possible he could get equal playing time at both spots). Denver's defense ranked third in points allowed per game (18.3), seventh in takeaways (25) and first in sacks (63) last season. After making several key additions this spring, the Broncos figure to have an even better unit in 2025. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! Former Justin Herbert teammate calls on former Oregon QB to ‘relax a bit'

File this one in the category of Strange and Unusual quotes. Earlier this week, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Kyle Van Noy, who played for the Los Angeles Chargers for just one season, felt it necessary to go on the record and tell the world how he thinks Justin Herbert should handle his business going forward. Van Noy told Fox Sports' Eric Williams that he thinks the former Oregon quarterback should "relax a bit" for the coming seasons and beyond. "I do think he's doing some things. He would go to team dinners, but I think he could also do more," Van Noy said. "And that's just me from my year of being with him. He's still young. And I'm sure he's way better now than since I was there. But that was just something he could do more." This is coming from a player who hasn't been Herbert's teammate for almost three years. The Chargers have since changed coaching regimes, and Herbert had a career season in 2024. Despite a disappointing first-round exit a season ago, many think the Chargers could be possible Super Bowl contenders in 2025. Van Noy acknowledges that Herbert works harder than most in the NFL, but for some reason, that's a detriment. "You've already accomplished so much. I know he wants to accomplish even more, but I do feel like he takes the game very seriously," he said. "The one thing I will say about Justin is he works really hard, and I appreciate that as a teammate. But sometimes you don't have to work as hard. Let's take a step back for just a second and diagnose - am I doing other parts of the game like the film study enough?' It's an odd take to have for someone who doesn't even play on the same side of the ball as Herbert. If this was a former receiver, the opinion might carry more weight. But from someone who played with the Chargers for just 17 games that took place in 2022, the opinion seems unnecessary. However, it could add fuel to the fire for Herbert and the Chargers. A relaxed Justin Herbert could be a dangerous Justin Herbert, and a member of the Ravens, a team that also has Super Bowl aspirations, Van Noy might get to see that firsthand.
