Perak govt proposes tahfiz centres be reclassified under lower water tariff code
State Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said the power to amend or set water service tariffs lies with the relevant minister, based on recommendations made by SPAN.
'According to the implementation of the water supply rate adjustment under the Water Services Industry (Rates for Water Supply Services) (State of Perak) (Amendment) Regulations 2024, Second Schedule (Regulation 3), regarding Usage Type, tahfiz centres are now uniformly categorised across Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan under the 'School' category with Non-Domestic Usage Type, subject to tariff code 21.
'The state government takes note of the proposal to reclassify water tariff for tahfiz centres and is ready to forward it to SPAN for consideration,' he said during the winding up session on the Royal Address at the State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.
On April 18, Selama assemblyman Mohd Akmal Kamarudin urged the state government to hold engagement sessions with tahfiz school administrators statewide following the water tariff code revision by the Perak Water Board which has affected these institutions.
He said the change from tariff code 41, which covered houses of worship and charitable institutions, to code 21, a non-domestic category, has placed a financial burden on tahfiz management.
The change in tariff code has allegedly resulted in a monthly water bill increase of between RM500 and RM1,000.

KOTA KINABALU, July 22 — The Sabah Energy Council at its meeting today has in principle approved energy projects of up to 723 megawatts to cater for the state's medium-term electricity demand. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said two gas-fired power plants in Kimanis and Tawau with a total capacity of 360MW, as well as renewable energy projects from hydro and wind energy sources producing a total 363MW capacity, have been given conditional technical and commercial approval. 'This is in line with the state's economic growth, the needs of the industrial sector and consumers' ability to bear reasonable energy generation costs,' he said after chairing the meeting this morning. 'I believe that with the commitment and cooperation of all parties, the council will continue to serve as the highest platform for coordinating the state's energy policies in an integrated manner.' He said that several fast-track projects approved during the energy council's meetings last year were beginning to show productivity. Among them was the increase in the power generation reserve margin from 10 per cent in January 2023, before the Energy Commission of Sabah assumed regulatory authority, to 17 per cent currently. It is expected to further increase to 30 per cent by the end of this year. 'The fast-track projects had also resulted in a reduction in Sabah's System Average Interruption Duration Index, from 363 minutes in the first six months of 2023 to 215 minutes in the first six months of 2024, and further down to 162 minutes in the first six months of this year,' he said.

Johor Seeks Federal Funds For Housing, Flood Mitigation, Waste Management Projects
JOHOR BAHRU, July 16 (Bernama) -- The Johor state government has submitted funding applications to the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) for several key projects involving public housing, flood mitigation, and modern solid waste management. State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said the requests were presented during an official meeting with KPKT secretary-general Datuk Wira M Noor Azman Taib in Putrajaya today. The top priority, he said, was securing funds for the phased rejuvenation of the Taman Ungku Tun Aminah (TUTA) flats, which are in need of long-term maintenance and upgrades. 'This initiative is vital to ensure that older low-cost housing remains safe, comfortable, and habitable for residents,' he said in a Facebook post. Mohd Jafni added that Johor is also seeking approval to develop 1,000 housing units under the Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB) programme, with the state government committing RM20,000 per unit as part of a cost-sharing initiative to help more people own homes. He said a special request was also made for funds to address flood-prone areas identified as high-risk zones across the state. He urged KPKT to approve phased interventions ahead of the monsoon season to protect vulnerable communities. Another proposal focused on the Waste-to-Energy (WTE) project in Bukit Payong, which is expected to become a major driver of sustainable solid waste management in Johor by incorporating green technology. 'All these proposals are part of a clear and focused effort to improve the quality of life for Johoreans and strengthen the state's infrastructure. 'These initiatives align with the broader vision of Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi under the 'MAJU JOHOR' agenda — to build a modern, resilient state that puts the people first in every policy and implementation,' he added.

Amanah Youth urges Negri Sembilan government to tap reserves instead of raising water tariffs
SEREMBAN: Amanah Youth has urged the Negri Sembilan government to utilise its reserves to help the state water concessionaire offset rising costs of treating drinking water rather than seeking an increase in tariffs. Its state communications director, Zainal Lutfi Zainal Fitr, said the wing believes that increasing water tariffs now is not appropriate, as the people are already facing a higher cost of living, with the latest being an increase in electricity tariffs. "The increase in electricity and water tariffs at the same time is going to be a double whammy to the people. "If water tariffs are also increased, it will surely hit those in the B40 and M40 categories badly," he said. Zainal Lutfi said it would be judicious for the state government to utilise its reserves, which amount to RM1.02bil, to assist Syarikat Air Negri Sembilan (Sains) with its operating expenses and to continue providing a quality water supply. He also urged the state government to hold discussions with all stakeholders, including NGOs and elected representatives, before making any decision which may add to the burden of the people. On Tuesday (July 15), Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun said that the state government had submitted an application to the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) to review water rates for domestic users in the state. He said a marginal increase was necessary to enable Sains to continue operating. Aminuddin said a slight increase was also justified, as approximately RM20mil annually was used to replace old and broken pipes in the state. He said Sains also had to spend money to repair and upgrade water tanks to ensure the supply in some areas is not disrupted. Last week, SPAN said it had received applications from 10 states to review their water tariff rates.
