Hugh Grant 'unrecognisable' in sinister horror role as he ditches rom-com past

Daily Record19-06-2025

Hugh Grant stars in the American psychological horror film, Heretic, which was written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the filmmakers behind A Quiet Place
An electrifying new entry in the horror scene, the 2024 film has garnered critical acclaim, notably for Hugh Grant's 'brilliant' portrayal in the latest psychological terror, Heretic.
Penned and helmed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the shrewd minds behind A Quiet Place, the American chiller touches upon religious themes with a focus on Mormonism, questioning the fundamentals of belief and the potential for religion to be wielded as a means of manipulation.

In Heretic, Hugh Grant, at 64, embodies Mr Reed, an unconventional character fascinated by the Mormon church. Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East feature as Mormon missionaries who call upon him, yet as events unfold, Mr Reed's motivations appear increasingly sinister against the backdrop of his mysterious dwelling.

A review from Rotten Tomatoes says: "Really liked this film, thought-provoking in the ways in which it gets you to look at religion. Great to see Hugh Grant in something other than a floppy-haired love interest... The ending makes you question, 'How did it really finish! ?' So in my mind, a good movie."
Grant's stirring rendition in Heretic has led to nominations for best actor at the Golden Globes, the Critics' Choice Awards, and the BAFTAs. But industry nods aside, audiences too have been taken aback by how distinct this role is for him, a stark shift from his renowned romantic comedy roots, reports the Mirror US.
The actor gained notoriety for his portrayal of the archetypal British gentleman in a slew of 1990s romantic comedies, many penned by Richard Curtis. His roles in Love Actually, Bridget Jones, Notting Hill, and Four Weddings and a Funeral typically cast Grant as a lovable man smitten with love, making his appearance in Heretic a stark departure that left fans taken aback.
One critic said: "Great acting. Hugh Grant was fantastic. I love when they play roles totally out of character. Must see."
Another opinion expressed admiration for Grant's performance as the enigmatic older gentleman, stating: "Excellent concept, expertly portrayed by Hugh Grant. Chilling and captivating with a real sinister chemistry. The only thing that lets it down is a bit of a lackluster ending, but otherwise it's great."
The film presents an unsettling scenario where two young Mormons, after a probing conversation about their faith at Mr. Reed's residence, are given a choice between two doors based on their belief in God. However, both doors ominously lead to the same grim destination.
A viewer said: "Hooked me from the start", adding, "This film questions religion and your sanity. Fantastic performance from everybody. You can't help but love Hugh Grant in this."
For those seeking a new horror flick or a film that promises to unsettle, Heretic is currently available for viewing on Apple TV.

Katy Perry fans convinced she hinted at Orlando Bloom split last year

Katy Perry's fans think she may have hinted her relationship with Orlando Bloom was in trouble a year ago (Image: Getty Images for MTV) Fans of Katy Perry have uncovered possible signs she channeled her engagement breakdown into her latest album - suggesting her romance with Orlando Bloom could have been all but over last year. The 40--year-old American singer had been engaged to 48-year-old Bloom since 2016. The couple also welcomed a daughter named Daisy together - with the bundle of joy arriving in August 2020. However, reports this year suggested the couple have called time on their romance - and may have gone their separate ways weeks ago. Now fans have been examining the lyrics of songs featured on Katy's 2024 album 143 - including the break up song Truth. The lyrics of the track hint at a relationship ruined by disloyalty. Lyrics include: "I wanna know the truth / Even if it hurts me. I got a vision keepin' me up at night / My intuition's tellin' me things ain't right. "Can't look in the mirror, what is it you're tryna hide? / Can't give me your password to your phone, not start a fight / You're treating me different, tell me what's going through your mind?" Fans have been re-examining the lyrics of the songs she released in 2024 Katy's YouTube page has been buzzing with speculation as fans have been investigating the lyrics of the track. Taking to the comments of a video relating to the track Truth, one fan wrote: "Who's here after the breakup rumors?" Another typed: "So is this song about Orlando?" And a third commented: "Did he do something? Cause even back then I did think this song is so odd to be in a full love album." Earlier this month it was suggested Katy and Orlando had called time on their engagement and decided to split up. An insider claimed Katy's album 143 flopping impacted her relationship, with the source noting: "Orlando was supportive, but it caused some tension." Orlando has been spotted mingling with single women at the wedding of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez (Image: GC Images) PageSix reported that the couple are waiting until her current tour, Lifetimes, concludes on December 7, before making their split public news. And since these reports emerged, Orlando has been spotted flirting with women at the wedding of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez - which took place in Italy over the weekend. On Saturday, Katy shared a cryptic social media post that appeared to hint at her state of mind amid the reports of her relationship collapsing. Katy reposted a video from a digital guru who uses "the laws of the universe" to transform lives, suggesting that mastering these laws can "heal" one's life. In the shared clip, the guru stated, "The phase of the moon that was during your date of birth determines your purpose." Katy shared the video without adding any personal commentary, leaving fans to wonder if she was hinting at her own life's purpose. The video explained that those born during a Waning Crescent moon phase are here to "If you were born on a Waning Crescent, you are here to complete the mission that you feel. You are closing chapters no longer beneficial to the collective. You are laying groundwork for new beginnings. Your role is to be a savior to others." The singer also updated her fans with clips from her live performances, including a compilation from The Lifetimes Tour, showcasing her energetic stage presence. As she continues her international tour in Australia, she captioned her concert footage, "ONLY 4 SHOWS LEFT IN AUSTRALIA LFG ADELAIDE." With the tour keeping Katy in Australia, she was noticeably absent from Jeff and Lauren's wedding - despite the singer being a close friend of the couple. She even went to space with Lauren earlier this year on a rocket funded by Jeff's Blue Origin company. Like this story? I only spent six months there, but it felt like 16 years. It's a real family. "It's a real special club, owned by special people, run by a special man. We're very proud of this moment to be stood here, knowing that we are playing against PSG as owners, as friends, as partners. It's very special." Ahead of Sunday's match, Lionel Messi also admitted that he wasn't entirely happy during his time in the French capital. He said: "Coming to play for Inter Miami was an opportunity and the way things developed during my last years in Paris, although it was a decision that I had to make on the go, because I had to leave from Barcelona, I went through two years which I didn't enjoy. "I wasn't happy on a daily basis, with the training, the matches. I had a hard time adapting to all that. I felt called to come to Inter [Miami] because it's a club that's growing, very new, with few years as a club."
