KKCCI seeks Pralhad Joshi's intervention in ensuring regional development push

The Hindu16-06-2025
The Kalyana Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCCI) submitted a detailed memorandum to Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and New and Renewable Energy Prahlad Joshi during his visit to Kalaburagi recently pressing for his intervention in getting several long-standing regional demands fulfilled.
The memorandum, submitted by KKCCI president Sharanabasappa Pappa and secretary Shivaraj V. Inginshetty, highlighted key concerns and sought the Union government's action on industrial, agricultural and infrastructure development in Kalaburagi and the larger Kalyana Karnataka region which continues to lag in major development indicators.
One of the primary appeals is the formal establishment of a Railway Division in Kalaburagi, sanctioned in 2014 but yet to be operationalised. Despite the government acquiring 41 acres of land, the absence of a functioning division has left the region's rail grievances scattered across five zones, causing administrative inefficiencies. Notably, Kalaburagi and Wadi stations generate significant freight revenue for the Solapur Division, the memorandum noted.
The KKCCI also called for Kalaburagi to be notified as an aspirational district citing its poor human development indicators and income levels compared to neighbouring districts already under the NITI Aayog scheme.
Further, the chamber raised serious concerns over the unrestricted import of tur dal which it said has destabilised prices and adversely affected farmers and local processing units.
The memorandum also advocated for a 5% interest subvention on term loans availed of by agro-processing units, including dal and rice mills in Kalaburagi, Yadgir and Raichur that are under pressure due to high interest rates and mounting NPAs. It noted that these units are vital to rural employment and agricultural value addition and will benefit significantly from such support.
The chamber also urged the revival of the stalled Mega Textile Park project sanctioned in 2011 with a budget of ₹46.39 crore. Although the first instalment has been released, the project stalled due to procedural issues. With over 10,000 skilled textile workers in the region and extensive cotton cultivation nearby, its revival can significantly boost employment and regional economic activity, the memorandum noted.
Another major request has been the re-sanctioning of the MSME Technology Centre originally approved for Shahabad in Kalaburagi during 2013-14. Due to unresolved land litigation, the project was relocated to another State. KKCCI stressed the need to restore this initiative, especially considering the high unemployment levels in the region which also includes two existing aspirational districts, Yadgir and Raichur.
Additionally, the chamber has recommended that the Mumbai-Kanyakumari Industrial Corridor be routed through Kalaburagi. It has proposed the development of an industrial corridor covering 1,000 acres in the area which will help attract investment, spur industrial growth and reduce unemployment in one of the most backward regions of the State.
KKCCI office-bearers expressed the confidence that Mr. Joshi, given his senior position and proximity to the Prime Minister will champion the cause and ensure long-overdue attention is paid to Kalyana Karnataka region.

Mass protest planned on Aug 1 over internal reservation delay

Bengaluru: Intensifying their long-standing demand for internal reservation within the Scheduled Castes, Madiga community organisations have announced a massive state-wide protest on August 1. Former Union Minister A. Narayanaswamy declared that protestors will gather in front of Deputy Commissioners' offices across all districts to draw the state government's attention to the issue. Addressing a joint press meet at a private hotel in Bengaluru, Narayanaswamy reminded that August 1 will mark one year since Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud's ruling on internal reservation. 'If the Karnataka Cabinet fails to pass a resolution and present it in the Assembly by August 10, we will be forced to call for a Karnataka bandh,' he warned. He added that meetings with 4,000–5,000 people would be held to decide the next steps. He cautioned that the Madiga community would launch a non-cooperation movement if the government continued to delay the implementation. 'The Chief Minister himself once said that Congress lost because it failed to act on internal reservation. We will make sure history repeats itself if they betray us again,' he stated. Narayanaswamy pointed out that the Madiga community has been fighting for internal reservation for over three decades. He cited examples of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, where similar measures were successfully implemented. 'In Telangana, internal reservation was enforced in 1999, upheld by the High Court in 2004. But here, even after the Supreme Court's verdict, the Congress claims there is no need for it and denies the most marginalised their due share,' he alleged. He accused the Congress, which ruled Karnataka for decades, of repeatedly neglecting the Madiga community's rights. 'Even AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge advised the Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to go slow, yet Revanth went ahead and implemented it. Andhra's Chandrababu Naidu did it, Punjab did it, but Karnataka is dragging its feet,' he criticised. Recounting recent developments, Narayanaswamy said that when the Madigas protested in Belagavi five months ago, ministers promised implementation within three months and formed the Nagamohan Das Commission with a 40-day deadline. 'They asked for more time, but even after six months nothing has moved. The government didn't provide key political and employment data sought by the commission,' he said, accusing the state of deliberately stalling the process. Former Deputy Chief Minister and MP Govind Karjol also demanded that the state government implement internal reservation from August 16. 'This is a betrayal of Dalits. In 2023, the Congress promised this in its manifesto and during its first Cabinet meeting. But instead of delivering, they set up committees and keep extending deadlines,' Karjol alleged, adding that the Nagamohan Das Commission's requests for crucial information went unanswered. 'If the government fails to act by August 16, it will be 'implement or face mass agitation'. We will not let them bury this issue,' Karjol warned.

China to get sleepless nights as Modi government makes Big move into Rare Earth magnets production, Rs 13450000000 to...

The demand for rare earth minerals is increasing quickly across the globe. These minerals contribute to several applications, like smartphones, electric vehicles, defense apparatus, and renewable energy technologies. Earlier in July, Union Minister of Heavy Industry and Steel HD Kumaraswamy stated that the Central government has drafted a proposal to offer a total of Rs 1,345 crore in subsidies to improve rare earth magnet manufacturing. This announcement is intended to strengthen critical technology supply chains in the context of restrictions placed on exports, primarily from China. Kamran Rizvi, the Secretary at the Ministry of Heavy Industries, has said that a draft scheme for rare earth magnet processing has been circulated for inter-ministerial consultation. The scheme is likely to provide incentives for establishing manufacturing infrastructure in the full value chain – mineral extraction and refining to manufacture of finished magnets. Kamran Rizvi, Secretary at the Ministry of Heavy Industries, stated that any manufacturer who does the end-to-end processing of rare earth oxides to finished magnets can receive the subsidy. This scheme will include both private and public sector enterprises. China's overwhelming control of global rare earth processing – commanding over 90 per cent of the world's magnet production capacity–has created significant vulnerabilities for industries worldwide. These materials are critical across multiple sectors, including automobiles, home appliances, and clean energy systems.
