Michael Jackson ‘died desperate for sleep as he worked in gruelling rehearsals'

Perth Now24-06-2025
Michael Jackson's former lawyer has said the star died desperate for sleep as he rehearsed for concerts he never got to perform,
The singer was in the middle of preparing for a planned concert residency at London's O2 Arena – set to run from July 2009 to March 2010 – when he died of a heart attack aged 50 caused by an overdose of sedatives and propofol on 25 June 2009.
In his new book Crazy Lucky: Remarkable Stories from Inside the World of Celebrity Icons, Michael's friend and former lawyer John Mason reveals Michael was in dire financial straits and under immense pressure when he complained he was knackered.
The singer is said have told the lawyer about his upcoming tour he was working on at the time of his death: 'I can't function if I don't sleep. They'll have to cancel it. And I don't want them to cancel it.'
John added: 'In 2009, I was living in Reno when I got a call from someone who told me that Michael was in 'really bad shape.'
'He was trying to tour again, but he had collapsed onstage during rehearsals. Yet, he was back at it the next day. Michael was Michael.'
According to John, Michael was on the verge of losing his Neverland Ranch when AEG Live's tour promoter brought in Dr Conrad Murray, at Jackson's request, to manage his severe insomnia with nightly propofol infusions.
As rehearsals wore on, Michael reportedly became fixated on the residency.
By mid-June 2009, those close to the singer noticed alarming changes in his mental state, reporting 'deteriorating' health, including signs of paranoia, anxiety and obsessive behaviour.
On the morning of his death, Dr. Murray administered a cocktail of sedatives – 10 mg valium, 2 mg lorazepam, 2 mg midazolam, another 2 mg lorazepam and a further 2 mg midazolam between 1.30 am and 7.30 am – followed at 10.40 am by a fatal 25 mg dose of propofol, resulting in cardiac arrest.
Dr. Murray was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to four years in prison in 2011.
Choreographer Toni Basil, 79, also reflected on Jackson's physical collapse during a 2021 podcast, saying: 'He had stopped for six years, and all of a sudden, they talked him into doing a tour.
'And he's trying to sing and dance and rehearse in a small amount of time. It was killing him, and it did kill him.
'You go home at night, and you can't even walk because you're so stiff and sore and hoarse, and you can't sleep… what does he do to sleep?… he started to figure out a way to sleep.'.

Tony Hadley dismisses the prospect of a Spandau Ballet reunion

Tony Hadley doubts that a Spandau Ballet reunion would work. The 65-year-old singer quit as lead singer of the True band in 2017 due to "circumstances beyond my control" and was surprised to hear his ex-bandmate Gary Kemp suggest earlier this year that he would like to do another tour. Tony told Classic Pop magazine: "Really? That's news to me. "I don't think it would work. I haven't seen Gary, Martin (Kemp) or John (Keeble) in eight years. Steve (Norman) is the only one I'm vaguely in contact with. "We had some good times, but unfortunately there were some bad times as well. That's just life. We had some good laughs on the last tour, then unfortunately John fell ill and it wasn't the same without him. That was difficult." Tony doesn't want animosity amongst his former Spandau Ballet bandmates but is happy to be focusing on his solo career now. He said: "I wish Gary, Martin and John well, but I'm happy doing what I'm doing. I love the freedom I have now, the fact I can go from a bit of swing to a bit of rock. You can't do that within the confines of a band." Spandau Ballet had a huge hit with Gold in 1983 and Tony believes that the track continues to be popular as it is easy for people to sing along to. He explained: "You can't fail with Gold. There are times I get distracted singing it. I will suddenly come to and think: 'God, what's the second verse?' I get round it by going: 'Right, you lot can sing it...' However, Tony is still baffled that the band chose not to perform the song during their set at Live Aid in 1985. The singer said: "My one issue with Gold is, why didn't we play it at Live Aid? I think it's because we didn't think we could reproduce the orchestral touches at Wembley. Whatever, it didn't make any sense to me why we didn't do it." Hadley has been involved in music for over 40 years and believes that his distinctive voice has been pivotal to his success. He explained: "I've always had a big voice and it's always sounded like me. That gives me an identity, whether you like my voice or not. "My influences are all brilliant voices, but I'm not interested in technicality. Loads of singers can do more vocal twiddles than me and are technically better, but that's not what I'm interested in."

John Stamos replaces Josh Gad in Jesus Christ Superstar

John Stamos will replace Josh Gad in Jesus Christ Superstar. The Full House actor has stepped in to play King Herod in the live production at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles over the weekend after the Frozen star pulled out with COVID-19, and he has hailed the role a "dream" but also "a little insane" because he has had so little time to prepare. John wrote on Instagram: "Well… this weekend just got Biblical. I'm stepping in as King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar at the @HollywoodBowl, starring the brilliant @cynthiaerivo . King @Joshgad unexpectedly got hit with COVID (feel better soon, brother!)and while I didn't push him down the stairs, I am grateful for the chance to step into the gold lamé. "This is an honor. A dream. And also a little insane because… I just stepped off a plane from @thebeachboys tour in Spain and have less than 24 hours to pull this off. Wish me luck. And let's rock the Bowl.(sic)" Cynthia Erivo, who plays Jesus, is "really excited" to work with John. She shared his post on her Instagram Story and wrote: "You are missed @JoshGad and thank you @JohnStamos for stepping in on such short notice. I'm really excited to see you.(sic)" Josh had shared his devastation on Wednesday (30.07.25) that he would no longer be performing in the musical extravaganza. He wrote on his own Instagram account: 'It is with enormous heartbreak that I inform you all that unfortunately, I have contracted a virus known as COVID (remember that one little b****** from season one of 'earth really sucks right now?'? "Anyway, out of an abundance of caution and respect for my cast, I will not be performing in Jesus Christ Superstar this weekend (unless I test negative). 'It truly breaks my heart, but I can assure you all that this is going to be one of the greatest things you will ever see. 'I hope at some point you get to see me wear the crown and show you what we've been up to, because it was quite something, but for now, sadly, I will not be able to grace the Hollywood Bowl.(sic)" The Hollywood Bowl reshared Josh's statement and wished the Frozen actor a "speedy recovery".

Insta-glam home comes with roulette table, Ferrari garage

Want to take a sneak peek inside a Bulimba new-build that's drawing a whole lot of Instagram interest courtesy of its sleek interior and iconic façade? Mosman will open its doors at 11am tomorrow (August 2) for half an hour, marking only the second public viewing of the property after the first inspection drew a crowd of more than 300 people. FBI Interiors owners Michael and Natalie Ajaje worked with Tim Stewart Architects and McBryde Builders to bring the epic build to life and say their vison for the home was simple. 'We wanted to build one of the best houses in Bulimba, if not Brisbane,' Mr Ajaje said. Set on an 814sq m block, the home is known as 'Mosman' and marks the latest in a series of designer properties that the Ajajes have completed in recent years. MORE: Alice Cooper's in the living room: Hilarious Aussie listings revealed Qld acreage comes with insane 'Dad's Bar' with beer on tap Qld property: How much your home is worth now Described as their 'biggest and best' project to date, it spans three levels and has a commanding street presence due to timber cladding and white battened façade. 'The façade is very unique,' Mr Ajaje conceded. 'It's designed to set the house apart as it's a beautiful home and it deserves to stand out.' Inside, the attention to luxury detail continues, with the five-bedroom residence boasting a beach club back yard, yoga studio, roulette table, eight-car basement garage, and a bespoke circular staircase that cost an eye watering $250,000. 'It's a house with a lot of big-ticket items,' Mr Ajaje said. 'That staircase is a stunner. It's like a piece of art that you might see in the Hilton or a museum.' Featuring soaring ceilings, curves, texture and a clever use of space, the property is also designed to be functional. 'It's three levels with a lift and suits everyone from large families to professional couples and even the bachelor lifestyle,' Mr Ajaje said. Upstairs are four of the property's five ensuited bedrooms including a sprawling 120sq m master suite that's the size of an average three-bedroom apartment. It comes complete with a dressing room worthy of a Rodeo Drive retailer and an ensuite that would be equally at home in an upmarket wellness retreat. 'We've used all the tools we love,' Mr Ajaje said. 'The aim was to create something that offers easy living, is modern and on trend where there are lots of zones for people to retreat to or come together.' The central level is all about that communal lifestyle and features an open plan lounge and kitchen space leading out to the outdoor entertaining area overlooking the pool and back yard. 'People love the size of the home and that area out the back,' Mr Ajaje said. 'It's the ultimate entertainer with a beach club vibe and it's built to stand the test of time.' Downstairs, the basement area includes a games room with casino grade roulette table, a wellness space including yoga room, and a fully tiled, eight-car garage with Ferrari mural. 'The basement ensures there's parking for everyone, but it could also easily be converted to a fully standalone living space to accommodate multi-generational living,' Mr Ajaje said. 'Mosman' is listed with Sarah Hackett of Place and is located at 23 Henderson St, Bulimba. 'I'd love to see it go to a local family with younger or older kids,' Mr Ajaje said. 'It's a beautiful big house that's among the best in Brisbane right now and if you miss it, you could be waiting a long time for something similar.'
