Jobless teachers, govt employees rally in Howrah demanding reinstatement, DA hike

Kolkata, Jul 28 (PTI) Carrying a replica of the West Bengal state secretariat 'Nabanna' and placards, hundreds of jobless school teachers and serving state government employees marched through the streets of Howrah on Monday, demanding reinstatement of jobs and a hike in dearness allowance (DA).
Manch convenor Ashis Khamrui, who was among those on the forefront of the rally, said 'Our demands include reinstatement of 26,000 teachers who were rendered jobless following the Supreme Court order and immediate recruitment in primary-upper primary levels.' 'We had been protesting in central Kolkata's Sahid Minar area for the past three years. We are prepared to sit here on the road indefinitely if our demands are not met,' he added.
Ashis Banerjee, a state government employee, said the state had failed to hike DA as per the recent Supreme Court order. 'Now, they are citing a Calcutta High Court directive about our rally — but the court never disallowed the rally. It only said the protest shouldn't obstruct public places like Mangala Haat,' he added.
As senior police officers tried to persuade the protestors to disperse and return to their respective places, the protestors remained defiant.
'We will be forced to take steps as no permission has been granted for assembly of people by Calcutta High Court in Howrah city area. Please abide by the law,' a police officer announced over a loudspeaker.
The announcement seemed to have little impact on the protestors as they squatted on the road while personnel of police, RAF stood nearby.
Howrah SP Praveen Tripathi had earlier said the Calcutta High Court did not allow the 'Nabanna Abhijan' (march to Nabanna), and the police would follow the court's directive.
The manch, however, claimed that the HC had instructed that the rally should not affect the businessmen of Mangala Haat.
The route of the proposed rally won't be anywhere near the weekly marketplace, which is organised every Tuesday, he added. PTI SUS MNB

Key Naxal operative arrested from Haryana: NIA
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Jul 30 (PTI) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a key Naxal operative from Haryana, who was 'actively working to promote anti-national activities", an official statement said on Wednesday. Priyanshu Kashyap, a native of the Naxal-infested Bastar district in Chhattisgarh and currently living in Rohtak district of Haryana, was nabbed on Tuesday on the basis of information provided by Haryana Police, the agency said. Leaders of CPI (Maoist) have been conspiring to re-energise the decrepit influence of the outfit in the Northern Regional Bureau (NRB), comprising Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, it said. The conspiracy involves several underground and overground workers (OGWs) of the terror organisation, engaged in recruiting cadres and strengthening the outfit in the northern states, the NIA said. Many front organisations and student wings are supporting the outfit's efforts to wage a war against the government of India, it claimed. While the underground workers are in direct contact with senior leaders of CPI (Maoist), the OGWs operate in the guise of activists to further the nefarious agenda, the NIA said. The workers were being provided funds from the Eastern Regional Bureau of the CPI (Maoist), especially from Jharkhand, NIA investigations have revealed. Mamata may raise financial grant to Durga Puja committees
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Kolkata, Jul 30 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is likely to hike the financial grant provided to Durga Puja committees during this year's festival in September, a state secretariat source said on Wednesday. Banerjee is scheduled to chair a meeting with multiple Durga Puja committees from across the state at the Netaji Indoor Stadium here on Thursday. 'There are high chances that the chief minister will raise the grant from the existing Rs 75,000 to each puja committee. However, there is no confirmation on this," the source said. The grant is likely to be hiked to Rs 85,000 or Rs 1 lakh, he said. US tariff to hit iPhone production expansion, electronics exports
Agency: Last Updated: New Delhi, Jul 30 (PTI) US President Donald Trump's announcement of 25 per cent tariff on all goods coming from India starting August 1, plus an unspecified penalty, is expected to impact Apple's plans to expand iPhone manufacturing in India as well as export of other electronics to the US. The move comes at a time when Indian electronics production is reeling under pressure due to restrictions imposed by China on supply of several critical components, capital goods and even skilled technology professionals. According to industry experts, while Chinese restrictions may slow down production, US tariff will impact exports of electronics from India. 'Today's sudden announcement of 25 per cent tariffs on exports from India to the US will certainly hit Apple's plan of making India as a large export hub for iPhone exports to US," IDC India, South Asia & ANZ, Associate Vice-President for devices research, Navkendar Singh, said. He said the US makes up around 25 per cent of iPhone shipments for Apple — around 60 million per annum. 'To meet the iPhone demand in the US from iPhone assembled in India requires significant manufacturing expansion in India, which will be directly impacted by these new tariffs," Singh said. According to multiple sources, Apple plans to increase iPhone production to 60 million units this year from about 35-40 million units that it produced in 2024-25. Apple CEO Tim Cook, during the earnings call for the second quarter ended March 29 had announced that all iPhones sold in the US during the April-June period will be shipped from India. India-made iPhones are assembled in Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn's factory in Tamil Nadu. 'For Apple, near-term challenges include higher costs on India-assembled iPhones exported to the US, potentially dampening demand and prompting recalibration of its supply chain. While some long-term shifts towards US-based production are in motion, India will remain a critical lynchpin in Apple's global strategy," CyberMedia Research, Industry Research Group (IRG), Vice President (VP), Prabhu Ram said. An emailed query sent to Apple did not elicit any reply. Ram said China's export restrictions present near-term headwinds to India's electronics manufacturing ambitions, particularly in critical materials and components. India must intensify its efforts to reduce upstream dependencies and accelerate the build-out of a resilient, end-to-end supply chain. Industry players remain confused if the 25 per cent duty announced by Trump will be imposed in addition to the existing 10 per cent baseline tariff. The 10 per cent tariff, which currently applies to most Indian goods barring a few, was announced by Trump on all countries on April 2. Electronics components bodies Elcina, Secretary General, Rajoo Goel, is of the view that the US will impose 15 per cent additional tariff over 10 per cent. 'A 15 per cent increase in import duty will definitely impact our exports of electronics, a major share of which is finished mobiles. But there are several electronic assemblies for telecom, auto, consumer equipment and some components which will be adversely impacted," Elcina Secretary General Rajoo Goel said. He said China's hostile steps can impact the supply side and increase costs as production will be impacted, at least in the short term till alternatives are developed. 'Increase in tariffs by the US will affect exports, shrinking demand. Both these steps could result in slowing growth," Goel said. IESA and SEMI India President Ashok Chandak said, 'India does not have any major advantage compared to other Asian countries anymore if the 25 per cent tariff above baseline 10 per cent is continued. However, it also underlines the urgency for India's electronics sector to diversify export markets, deepen domestic markets, develop brands and products, and move up the value chain to reduce dependency on price-sensitive, tariff-exposed exports." As India does not make semiconductors, it won't be affected in the short term, he said, adding that India needs to come out of the shadow of China to be competitive.
