Drug-driver jailed for causing death of woman, 89, in Nottingham

BBC News10-07-2025
A drug-driver has been jailed for causing the death of an 89-year-old mobility scooter rider.Doreen Raynor died in hospital after she was hit by an Audi driven by Rayner Middleton in Huntingdon Street, Nottingham, on 4 March 2023.On 12 May, the first day of her scheduled trial at Nottingham Crown Court, Middleton admitted causing death by driving without due care while over the specified limit for a controlled drug. The 31-year-old was sentenced to four years at the same court on Thursday.
The court heard Mrs Raynor had left her house to buy vegetables for an upcoming family meal, while Middleton was driving to pick up her son.
Video footage was displayed in court of Middleton's Audi in the minutes before the crash, which showed an undertake described by the prosecution as "aggressive and inappropriate driving".Although the pedestrian light was red when Mrs Raynor was crossing, the court heard Middleton had been driving at about 44mph when her brake lights were activated.Prosecutor Nicholas Bleaney said: "It is not part of this case that the lady was unfit to drive, the key feature was speed."Mrs Raynor's son Michael Raynor told the court in a victim impact statement that his mum's life was "needlessly taken"."The reckless and irresponsible actions of the driver has robbed me of my mum, shattered my family and left a gaping hole in the lives of all who knew her," he said. The court heard Mrs Raynor had had 13 children in total, including an abandoned baby who she had taken in, and was a great-great-grandmother.Mrs Raynor's daughter Melanie Frearson described her mother as "a pillar of the family and community"."As well as this, she was the strongest person we knew. She was our iron lady," she added.Ms Frearson said the memory of her mother's last breath "still haunts" her, and added "the hurt and pain is still unbearable today as it was on the day she died".
'Grossly inappropriate' speed
In mitigation, the court heard Middleton, of Nelson Road in Arnold, Nottinghamshire, "acknowledged the devastation she has caused, not only to the Raynor family, but her own"."She wishes she could undo the harm," her defence counsel Simon Eckersley said.Mr Eckersley said when Middleton approached the junction, her light was green, but said "plainly, she was going too fast".She was found to have an excess of benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, in her system when the crash happened.Judge Steven Coupland said: "I accept you did not set out to cause a collision but the reality is you should not have been driving. He said Middleton "chose to drive in an aggressive way at a speed that was grossly inappropriate" for that particular street."Had you been driving within the speed limit the collision may not have happened at all," he added.Judge Coupland also disqualified Middleton from driving for four years, noting her previous lack of custodial sentences and clean driving record.

Nigel Farage hits out at 'cover-up' of alleged rape by Afghan asylum seekers as Reform UK council leader says he 'begged' for release of arrested men's immigration status

Nigel Farage today hit out at a 'cover-up' after two Afghan asylum seekers were charged in connection with the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl in Nuneaton. The Reform UK leader said it was 'absolutely disgraceful' that information about the men's background was not revealed to the public. It came after George Finch, the Reform leader of Warwickshire County Council, said he had been 'begging' for information about the immigration status of the alleged offenders in Nuneaton to be released. Speaking at a press conference in central London, Mr Farage said the immigration status of those who are charged with alleged offences should be routinely released. He also demanded that those who enter the UK illegally should not be 'free to roam the streets' and 'should be detained ahead of them being deported'. Mr Farage denied that releasing the names, addresses and imigration status of those charged with offences risked unrest on Britain's streets. He claimed that last summer's riots, in the wake of the Southport riots, was caused by the public not immediately being told the status of the attacker. He said this 'led to crazy conspiracy theories spreading online'. Mr Farage spoke this morning as he welomed Rupert Matthews, the police and crime commissioner for Leicestershire, to Reform. Mr Matthews has defected from the Tories to join Mr Farage's party. He has been a police and crime commissioner since 2021, and served as an MEP for the East Midlands for the Conservatives between 2017 and 2019. At the weekend, Warwickshire Police said two men were charged in connection with the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl in Nuneaton. Ahmad Mulakhil, 23, was arrested on July 26 and charged the next day with rape, according to the force. He appeared at Coventry Magistrates' Court on Monday and has been remanded in custody. Mohammad Kabir, 23, was arrested in Nuneaton on Thursday and charged with kidnap, strangulation and aiding and abetting rape of a girl under 13, the force added. He appeared at Coventry Magistrates' Court on Saturday and has been remanded in custody. Mulakhil and Kabir will both appear at Warwick Crown Court on August 26. Officers are appealing to anyone who was in the Cheveral Street area between 8.30pm and 9.45pm on July 22 and may have seen anything of interest to come forward by calling 101 and quoting incident number 418 of July 22. Warwickshire Police did not deny Mulakhil and Kabir are asylum seekers, as revealed by the Mail On Sunday. In a statement, the force said that once someone is charged with an offence, they follow national guidance, which 'does not include sharing ethnicity or immigration status'. The force said: 'Our neighbourhood officers work every day with local community partners. 'When something significant happens, we brief these partners and local elected officials on the circumstances of the crime, the investigation, the work being undertaken to arrest those responsible and how local people and partners can help a concerned community. 'Where relevant, sensitive information around locations, details of the crime and policing activity to catch offenders can be shared, with a warning that this is sensitive or confidential information and disclosure by those being briefed could affect future court hearings. 'We work to hold offenders to account and will always do everything in our power to present a robust case to the courts and protect the integrity of court proceedings. 'Once someone is charged with an offence, we follow national guidance. This guidance does not include sharing ethnicity or immigration status.'

Farage slams ‘we've had ENOUGH' as cops accused of ‘cover up' after asylum seekers charged with raping 12-year-old girl

NIGEL Farage has spoken out after cops were accused of "covering up" that two men charged with raping a 12-year-old girl were asylum seekers. Two men were charged after a girl was allegedly kidnapped, raped and strangled in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. 3 3 3 Ahmad Mulakhil, 23, is accused of raping of the underage girl in Nuneaton on July 22. A second man, Mohammad Kabir, also 23, has been charged with aiding and abetting rape, as well as strangulation and kidnap of the girl. George Finch, the leader of Warwickshire county council and Reform party politician, claimed there has been a "cover up". He alleged the two men were asylum seekers, and accused the police of hiding this from the public. Now, Nigel Farage has weighed into the debate and blasted that the British people "have had enough" of "unidentified males" roaming the streets. Speaking at a press conference today, the Reform leader said: 'None of these young and unidentified males that are coming into this country should be free to roam the streets. "They should be detained ahead of them being deported. 'We will do that to protect the British people. We have had enough.' Cllr Finch claimed that the chief executive of the council, Monica Fogarty, told him Kabir was an asylum seeker living in a house of multiple occupancy. He said locals were able to "join the dots together" and came to the same assumption. Cllr Finch, leader of Warwickshire County Council, claimed he wasn't immediately told about two migrants involved in the alleged rape of a girl in Nuneaton. The Reform councillor claims he was only made aware of Mulakhil being charged two days later on July 29. I'll send depraved monsters like Ian Huntley to hellhole jails in El Salvador if Reform is elected, reveals Nigel Farage He claims he tried to contact the local police and crime commissioner, only to be told he was on holiday and didn't know much about the case. The Council Leader claimed he was 'begging' and 'screaming' for all details relating to the accused's asylum status to be released. He said: 'Our communities are at breaking point and that's why we need Reform to change things. We're the last line of defence against this block. 'The people of Nuneaton are hurt. They've had enough.' The Warwickshire assault allegedly unfolded between 8.30pm and 9.45pm on Tuesday, July 22. CCTV footage from a nearby doorbell camera appeared to show a man walking with the girl at around 8pm. Cops detained the suspect on Saturday 26, and he was charged the following day. He appeared at Coventry Magistrates' Court on Monday and was remanded in custody. Both defendants will next appear at Warwick Crown Court on August 26. While police are under no obligation to reveal a suspect's nationality, cops allegedly told local politicians and officials not to reveal it in this case over fears of 'inflaming community tensions', The Times reported. The roads where suspects live are usually named, but in this case were kept secret. However, Warwickshire Police has not denied reports that Mr Mulakhil and Mr Kabir are asylum seekers. An official claimed police feared the area would become a hotbed for protests like those outside a migrant hotel in Epping, Essex, last month. Last month, Epping made the headlines after becoming a hotspot for protests outside of asylum seeker hotels. The protest, outside the Bell Hotel in Epping, began peacefully but escalated into what officers described as "scattered incidents of violence" targeting police and property. Eight officers were injured and a number of police vehicles were damaged as missiles were thrown.
