Himalayan leap for yak genomic science

The Hindu14-05-2025
Specialists from four institutions of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) have assembled the first-ever chromosome-level genome of the Indian yak.
The Indian yak (Bos grunniens), often called the 'ship of the Himalayas', is an integral part of the economy of high-altitude dwellers, who depend on it for meat, milk, and transportation. The bovine animal has long been recognised for its resilience and adaptability to extreme conditions.
Mihir Sarkar, the director of ICAR-National Research Centre on Yak in Arunachal Pradesh's Dirang, said the 'leap for yak genomic science' marks a significant milestone that promises to revolutionise yak breeding programmes, conservation efforts, and the understanding of the genetic complexities of this vital species and its ecological role in the Himalayan landscape.
Along with Martina Pukhrambam and Vijay Paul, he led the genomic research for the ICAR-NRC on Yak. Sujay Rakshit, A.K. Mohanty, and Y.G. Prasad, the directors of the Ranchi-based ICAR-Indian Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology, the Meerut-based ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Cattle, and the Nagpur-based ICAR-CIRC, led their respective research teams for the project.
The research team utilised cutting-edge long-read sequencing technology and bioinformatics tools to generate the chromosome-level assembly, which maps the genes to their specific locations on the chromosomes, offering a significantly clearer and comprehensive picture.
'A comparative genomics between other bovine species with the generated data will open up allele mining for useful genes contributing to biotic and abiotic stresses and quality traits. The availability of a detailed genome is expected to benefit scientific research and local livestock management practices,' Dr. Rakshit said.
'With this genome, we can better understand how to sustain yak populations across the Himalayan belt,' Dr. Mohanty said.
Dr. Sarkar underscored the need for a concerted effort to translate these findings into practice, especially in conservation and sustainable development.
'This resource will be invaluable for identifying genetic markers for traits like cold tolerance, disease resistance, and milk production with much greater precision, which will ensure the long-term sustainability of yak populations and ultimately lead to the socio-economic uplift of yak herders,' Dr. Pukhrambam said.
In India, yaks are found above 7,000 feet in Ladakh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh. They face numerous challenges, including reduced grazing area, climate change, disease, and genetic erosion.

'Kiss Cam' Replaced By 'Coldplay Cam' Days After Andy Byron-Kristin Cabot Affair Scandal

Last Updated: The traditional Kiss Cam has reportedly been replaced by the 'Coldplay Cam' at sporting events across the US, following a controversy involving Astronomer Inc. CEO Andy Byron. The Kiss Cam, which brought all attention to technology firm Astronomer Inc. CEO Andy Byron and his colleague, Kristin Cabot, during a Coldplay concert, has reportedly been replaced by the 'Coldplay Cam'. According to a social media post, the cam has been replaced at sporting events across the country. The development comes after Byron submitted his resignation following the controversy. WHAT IS A KISS CAM? According to the information available on the internet, the kiss cam trend is a social pastime that takes place during arena, stadium and court sporting events in the United States and Canada. A kiss cam scans the crowd and selects a couple, whose images are shown on the Jumbotron screens in the arena. The kiss cam tradition originated in California in the early 1980s, as a way to fill in the gaps in play in professional baseball games, taking advantage of the possibilities of the then-new giant video screens. When the kiss cam is in action, the audience may be alerted by a known 'kiss-related' song being played, and/or an announcer warning the crowd. The crowd then pays attention to the marked 'kiss cam' video screen. Usually, several consecutive couples are selected, appear on the screen, and are then expected to kiss. THE COLDPLAY CONCERT AND ANDY BYRON CONTROVERSY Andy Byron resigned as the CEO of Astronomer Inc. on Saturday after a video of him embracing an alleged colleague at the Coldplay concert went viral and fueled relentless memes. 'Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met," New York-based Astronomer mentioned in a statement shared on LinkedIn. 'Andy Byron has tendered his resignation," the firm said, after previously launching an investigation. During a Coldplay concert in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Wednesday, the jumbotron zoomed in on a man and a woman embracing in the stands. But the canoodling pair appeared shocked and horrified when they spotted themselves on the big screen, with the man ducking out of frame and the woman hiding her face. 'Uh-oh, what? Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy," joked Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. Within hours, internet sleuths tracked down the man as Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and said the woman was the company's chief people officer, Kristin Cabot, alleging that the two were having a not-so-discreet affair. The video has garnered millions of views on multiple social media platforms, giving rise to memes discussing everything from the folly of having an affair at a Coldplay concert to the hypocrisy of an HR representative seemingly caught in a workplace relationship. view comments Location : New Delhi, India, India First Published: July 21, 2025, 11:56 IST News world 'Kiss Cam' Replaced By 'Coldplay Cam' Days After Andy Byron-Kristin Cabot Affair Scandal Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Early Smartphone Use Linked To Suicidal Thoughts, Aggression In Youth: Study

New Delhi: Children who own a smartphone before the age of 13 are more likely to experience poorer mental health and well-being in early adulthood, according to a global study of more than 100,000 young people released on Monday. The study, published in the Journal of Human Development and Capabilities, found that 18- to 24-year-olds who had received their first smartphone at age 12 or younger were more likely to report suicidal thoughts, aggression, detachment from reality, poorer emotional regulation, and low self-worth. Smartphones give early social media access and increase the risks of cyberbullying, disrupted sleep, and poor family relationships by adulthood, the team said. "Our data indicates that early smartphone ownership -- and the social media access it often brings -- is linked with a profound shift in mental health and well-being in early adulthood," said lead author neuroscientist Dr. Tara Thiagarajan, the founder and Chief Scientist of US-based Sapien Labs. Thiagarajan called for urgent action to protect the mental health of future generations, as their symptoms are not the traditional depression and anxiety, and can be missed by studies using standard screening procedures. The researchers urged policymakers to adopt a precautionary approach, similar to regulations on alcohol and tobacco, by restricting smartphone access for under-13s. They also called for mandating digital literacy education and enforcing corporate accountability. In recent years, several countries have banned or restricted the use of cell phones in institutions, including France, the Netherlands, Italy, and New Zealand. Several states in the US have also passed legislation requiring schools to have policies that at least limit access to smartphones for children. For the study, the team at Sapiens mapped the data on 100,000 young adults using the Mind Health Quotient (MHQ) -- a self-assessment tool that measures social, emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being -- to generate an overall mental health score. Young adults who received their first smartphone before age 13 had lower MHQ scores, with scores progressively declining the younger the age of first ownership. Younger ownership was also linked with diminished self-image, self-worth, and confidence, and emotional resilience among females, and lower stability, calmness, self-worth, and empathy among males. "Our evidence suggests that childhood smartphone ownership, an early gateway into AI-powered digital environments, is profoundly diminishing mental health and well-being in adulthood, with deep consequences for individual agency and societal flourishing," Thiagarajan said.

Abel George Mathew (Karnataka) and Aadish Jain (Delhi) won silver medals, while Archit Manas (Delhi) bagged a bronze. The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) issued a statement that with this achievement India came seventh at the IMO for the third time and equalled the feats of 1998 and 2001. The best rank achieved, so far, is fourth at the 65th IMO in 2024. It further said, "This is the third time in a row India has achieved a rank in the top 10 at the IMO (India finished ninth at IMO 2023 and fourth at IMO 2024). Since its debut in 1989, India has been placed in the top 10 on seven out of 35 occasions (India did not participate in 2020 because of the pandemic). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo " This year, Team India set a new record by achieving the country's highest-ever cumulative score of 193 out of a maximum of 252. The HBCSE, TIFR, is the nodal centre for training and selecting students to represent India at various international olympiads in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy and astrophysics. HBCSE conducts the national olympiad examination which serves as the gateway for final team selection. The statement said, "In IMO, questions are from four broad topics — algebra, combinatorics, number theory and geometry. The host country seeks proposals from every participating country and each can submit up to six problems. Upon receiving the problems by a certain deadline, the problem selection committee (PSC), appointed by the host country and approved by the IMO board, works on all the problems for at least two months and prepares the IMO shortlist (ISL). " Anant Mudgal, a member of the PSC of IMO 2025, said, "I thank the Mathematical Teachers' Association (India), Chennai Mathematical Institute and the funding agencies for their continued strong support to the mathematical olympiad programme, which enables us to showcase Indian talent on the global stage."
