The Hindu3 days ago

Ahead of the annual Amarnath Yatra, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday (June 28, 2025) interacted with a broad spectrum of stakeholders in Srinagar to review preparations and ensure smooth conduct of the pilgrimage.
The interaction, held at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC), was attended by National Conference leader and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, along with members of civil society, religious leaders, District Development Council (DDC) chairpersons, office-bearers of business and trade associations, and sitting MLAs.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Sinha said the administration had made comprehensive arrangements, including security-related measures, to facilitate the comfort and safety of visiting pilgrims.
'Despite challenging weather conditions and tough terrain, efforts have been made to ensure better facilities for the pilgrims. Many of you are aware of this. Significant improvements have taken place. I also know that people from Jammu and Kashmir, especially those involved in this yatra, have served with dedication and will continue to do so,' the Lieutenant Governor said.
Speaking to reporters following the consultation, Mr. Sinha stated that all stakeholders had assured him of their cooperation.
'I had invited all the senior leaders and representatives of the political parties to the Raj Bhavan and requested them to make the Amarnath Yatra and Muharram successful. They assured me of support for both the yatra as well as Muharram,' he said.
'The members of the civil society, religious leaders, DDC chairpersons, office-bearers of business and trade associations, and MLAs were here for consultations today. Senior officers were also present. We have been doing this endeavour for the last four years,' Mr. Sinha added.
He noted that the stakeholders emphasised the yatra as a people's pilgrimage rather than merely an administrative or shrine board event, pledging their full support for its success.
'I hope that with the blessings of Baba Amarnath, the yatra will be successful,' he said.

Pak army chief justifies terror groups' ops in J&K

Islamabad: Pakistan Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir on Saturday backed terror groups operating in Jammu and Kashmir, justifying their actions (what India has described as terrorism) as a 'legitimate struggle'. Addressing a graduating parade at the Pakistan Naval Academy in Karachi, Munir explained that Islamabad would even continue providing political, diplomatic, and moral support to the Kashmiri people. Munir's inflammatory comments come just a day before the Indian Army stopped an infiltration attempt by Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) militants from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) at the Keri sector of Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir—two days before the annual Amarnath Yatra. A group of heavily armed militants were challenged, leading to a gunfight that killed at least two of them. A local guide, arrested after suspicion of having assisted them, is now being questioned by security agencies. Munir, who is no stranger to spreading inflammatory anti-India rhetoric, also declared in his speech that India had 'twice undertaken acts of unprovoked aggression against Pakistan', and the onus of any future escalation would 'squarely lie with the aggressor'. 'Pakistan, despite grave provocations, acted with restraint and maturity, and demonstrated its commitment to regional peace and stability, which has led to Pakistan's role as a net regional stabiliser,' Munir said.

Pune: Poster with images of past and present leaders of Iran taken down

HOURS AFTER a poster displaying images of Iran's former supreme leader late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and current supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei was put up in Loni Kalbhor area on the outskirts of Pune, it was taken down on the directions of the local gram panchayat because it was put up without prior permission. Police officials said the poster was displayed by members of a local community with Iranian roots to mark the month of Muharram. A police officer from Pune City police said the poster was displayed on the metal arch at the entrance of a residential area in Kadamwak Wasti in Loni Kalbhor, which has a large number of residents of Iranian roots. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 5) Rajkumar Shinde said, 'The local police station received information about a poster which had images of Iran's leaders. We found out that it was put up to mark the month of Muharram. It also came to light that no permission was taken to put up this poster. The gram panchayat took down the poster.' Officials said that poster was put up some time in the early hours of Sunday and was taken off later during the day. An officer of Kadamwak Vasti Gram Panchayat said, 'When we checked with the members of the community who had put up the posters, they said the poster carried images of past and present supreme leaders of Iran and had a message marking Muharram. But given the current situation with regards to Iran, some people expressed concerns. We subsequently informed the local police officials. And because no prior permission of the gram panchayat or police was taken, the poster was removed in police presence. No law-and-order issue was reported from the area.'

Age-Old Symbol Of Brotherhood, Says Social Activist From Kashmir As State Gears Up For Amarnath Yatra 2025

After the Pahalgam attack, there were concerns that very less pilgrims would participate in the holy Amarnath Yatra this year. Soon after the attack, a shock spread across India, and thousands of tourists fled Kashmir, and registration for the annual Amarnath Yatra was also closed. But the collective efforts of the Jammu and Kashmir administration, local communities, and security forces have underlined the region's commitment to making Amarnath Yatra 2025 a memorable and safe experience. From logistical support to heartfelt hospitality, the adoption of the Yatra in Kashmir establishes it as a "people's Yatra". Rashid Rahil, a Social Activist from Kashmir, said the Yatra is an age-old symbol of brotherhood in Kashmir. The Yatra is incomplete without the common people of Kashmir. Every Kashmiri prays and works hard for the successful journey of a pilgrim. This time, everyone from the locals and civil society to tourism traders in Kashmir is excited to welcome the pilgrims coming for the holy Amarnath Yatra. Locals are playing a vital role in making the Yatra a success. From providing food and shelter to assisting in logistics, the Kashmiri community, especially in areas like Pahalgam and Ganderbal, warmly supports the pilgrims. The collaborative effort between locals, pilgrims, and authorities promotes communal harmony along with Kashmir's hospitality. Mohammad Yasin Shah (President, Kashmir Civil Society) said, "After the Pahalgam attack, we felt that the pilgrims were somewhat scared, so we announced to give full support. We also told LG sahab that we are with you, and you should allow the pilgrims to meet us too, so that they can get acquainted with the common people of Kashmir." There has always been support from the local people to facilitate the Yatra. Muslim ponywallahs, shopkeepers, and volunteers have historically been assisting the pilgrims, which reflects Kashmir's syncretic culture. LG Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed their best wishes on the occasion. They said that the administration has made elaborate arrangements to welcome and support the pilgrims. This includes coordination between civil authorities, security forces, and local people. LG held detailed meetings with the civil society and called it a people's yatra. LG Jammu Kashmir Manoj Sinha said, "I have spoken to political parties as well as the civil society of Kashmir. Everyone has assured cooperation in the yatra. This yatra is a yatra of Kashmir, a people's yatra." Amarnath Yatra 2025 is an important spiritual journey to the holy Amarnath cave located at an altitude of 3,888 meters in the Himalayas of Jammu and Kashmir, where devotees worship the naturally formed ice Shivling, a symbol of Lord Shiva. The yatra, scheduled to run from July 3 to August 9, 2025, is a vibrant expression of faith, visited by thousands of pilgrims every year. The yatra will also boost the local economy, generating income for ponywallahs, shopkeepers, transporters, and langar operators. There will be increased activity in hotels, guesthouses, and small businesses in Jammu, Srinagar, Pahalgam, and Baltal. The yatra is said to be a big help in reviving Kashmir's lost tourism.
