Netflix viewers have days left to catch 'darkly funny' cult horror comedy

Metro05-05-2025
It's officially panic stations for Netflix viewers who have just days left to watch one of the best comedy horror movies of recent years.
Ready Or Not, starring Samara Weaving, follows the story of a young bride who is invited to her new husband's house to meet his mysterious family.
However, things take a dark, Squid Game-style turn when fun, innocent childhood games, such as hide-and-seek, become dangerous and very, very bloody.
Weaving's character, Grace, suddenly finds herself in a fight for her life when her husband's mysterious family turns out to be super rich and also super thirsty for her blood.
Tackling subjects like the wealth gap in society and the psychopathy among the uber-rich 1%, the film was also praised for balancing its blood and guts with side-splitting laughs.

Originally released in cinemas in 2019, the acclaimed movie was made on a budget of $6million (£4.5m) and made $57.6million (£44m) at the global box office, more than earning its money back.
The film was added to Netflix's library following its positive reception from cinema audiences, with the streaming service putting Ready Or Not in its already massive collection.
However, it is set to leave the platform in less than two weeks, with the Tyler Gillett co-helmed film set to be unavailable in the UK after Thursday, May 15.
Speaking on Reddit, Fan387 sang the film's praises, saying that it had 'its own morbid sense of humour', also saying that the soundtrack was a favourite aspect.
Casual_Creator said: 'Watched this movie knowing nothing about it. Had a major blast. Such a fun movie and introduced me to Samara Weaving.'
Comparing it to other films from recent years, 22Seres said: 'It ended up being my favorite horror of 2019. And it's the best fun horror movie to come out in a while. Even more than the recent Scream movies.'
MothershipQ said the film had become a comfort watch for them: 'This movie rules. It's a regular watch for me. Doesn't get old, and the humor doesn't get too boring either.'
The film also stars Four Weddings actress Andie MacDowall, The O.C. star Adam Brody, Canadian TV actor Mark O'Brien, and veteran star Nicky Guadagni
Ready Or Not was celebrated by critics at the time, with the film boasting a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 89% and an average critical score of 7.2 out of 10.
The consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reads as follows: 'Smart, subversive, and darkly funny, Ready Or Not is a crowd-pleasing horror film with giddily entertaining bite.'
Ready Or Not was also co-directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, as well as Tyler Gillett – the pair went on to direct the fifth and sixth entries in the Scream franchise. More Trending
A sequel is planned for release soon, with Samara set to return alongside a star-studded cast including Elijah Wood, David Cronenberg, Kevin Durand, and Buffy actress Sarah Michelle Gellar.
The follow-up film is set to be titled Ready Or Not: Here I Come, with filming reportedly getting underway last month—no release date has been finalised.
Watch Ready Or Not on Netflix before it leaves on Thursday, May 15.

Hit Netflix adventure viewed 37.5 million times to top global film chart

Sophie-May Williams Published July 10, 2025 12:16pm Link is copied Comments Unsure of what movie to watch over the weekend? We've got you covered. Netflix has just released its latest roundup of the top 10 most-watched films over the last week, and there are some quality titles ready and waiting to be binged. From a classic noughties comedy to a tense action thriller, there's also a heartwarming original documentary filmed in the stunning oceans of Hawaii. Ready to shut the world away for a while? Here are the top 10 Netflix movies right now (Picture: Netflix) Raid 2 is a 2025 Indian Hindi-language crime thriller. It's a sequel to 2018's Raid. In 1989 in Rajasthan, India, IPS officer Patnaik plans to raid a palace, but it goes miserably wrong. He requests a bribe and is transferred to Bhoj, where he must investigate a respected local figure called Dada Bhai. He soon uncovers some hidden truths… (Picture: Netflix) Another sequel on this week's list is Grown Ups 2, but the premise is very different. For one, it's a comedy movie and follows the escapades of childhood friends Lenny, Eric, Marcus, and Kurt once again. It's set three years after the events of the first film, and sees Lenny and his family move back to his hometown. As soon as he arrives back, Lenny faces many hilarious situations, from waking up to a deer in his bedroom to being confronted by an obnoxious fraternity kid (Picture: Tracy Bennett) Gerard Butler plays Brodie Torrance, a commercial pilot and former RAF officer. When a lightning strike destroys part of the plane, Brodie is forced to perform an emergency landing on a rebel-controlled island in the Philippines. For the next 24 hours, Brodie - and homicide suspect Louis Gaspare - must fend off the attackers and rescue the 14 plane passengers who have been held hostage (Picture: AP) This wholesome documentary stars marine conservationist and social media activist Ocean Ramsey as she swims with sharks in Oahu, Hawaii. The film showcases Ocean's interactions with the feared fish and takes a (quite literal) deep dive into her mission to protect them (Picture: Netflix) Netflix's Trainwreck anthology documents various types of real-life events, from disastrous festivals, political scandals, and media hoaxes, to name a few. In the case of the aptly named Poop Cruise, it centres around a luxury cruise ship holding 4,000 passengers that experiences an engine fire. Stranded in the middle of the ocean, passengers and crew must deal with food shortages and (as you'd have guessed by the name), sewage leaks. Nice (Picture: Netflix) With 700,000 more views than 'Poop Cruise' is another Trainwreck offering: The Cult of American Apparel. This documentary explores the rise of American Apparel as one of the biggest fashion brands in the 2000s. However, thanks to tell-all interviews with insiders and former staff, it also uncovers financial troubles, harassment claims, and a toxic working environment (Picture: Netflix/Everett/REX/Shutterstock) The Old Guard is a 2020 superhero film based on Greg Rucka's comic book series. It follows a group of mercenaries who are centuries-old immortals with the ability to heal themselves. When they discover that someone is onto their secret and wants to kill them, they must fight to protect their freedom (Picture: AP) In this science fiction thriller, Mark Wahlberg stars as Evan, a reincarnated human who can remember everything from his past life. Evan knows the location of a device that can destroy the world, and is pursued by two groups trying to claim it for themselves: the Believers, who want to make the world a better place, and the Nihilists, who want to destroy the world (Picture: AP) This animated musical fantasy film follows a world-renowned K-pop girl band. While living their best lives in the spotlight and making music for their millions of adoring fans, they also have secret identities as demon hunters (Picture: Netflix) Finally, The Old Guard 2 (The Old Guard's sequel) is at number one. In this movie, Andy, one of the mercenaries, leads her fellow immortal warriors against a powerful enemy that threatens to destroy their group. When a long-lost immortal resurfaces, it complicates the group's mission to save humanity (Picture: AP)

Ncuti Gatwa says he left Doctor Who as ‘I am getting old and my body was tired'

The Rwandan-Scottish actor, 32, whose breakout role was Eric Effiong in Netflix hit Sex Education, played the Time Lord for two series after first appearing in a 60th anniversary special with the 10th and 14th incarnations of the Doctor, David Tennant. In May, during his final episode as the 15th Doctor, Gatwa appeared to be replaced by former Doctor Who companion Billie Piper when his character regenerated. Gatwa told the BBC's Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg programme: 'I'm getting old, and my body was tired… and I've now just started doing some ballet, so I'm making really great decisions. 'It's the most amazing job in the world, a job that any actor would dream of and – because it's so good – it's strenuous. 'It takes a lot out of you, physically, emotionally, mentally, and so it was time.' Asked if he would ever come back to the show, he said: 'Never say never.' Barbie star Gatwa has played the Doctor since Tennant's Time Lord bi-generated in 2023, after his version of the alien character was brought back to the series as the 14th Doctor. Gatwa was expected to be the UK's spokesperson at the Eurovision Song Contest in May but pulled out, with speculation the decision was connected to controversy surrounding Israel's participation in the competition. 'It all panned out very interestingly. I pulled out of it a long time before it was announced', he said. 'And it was announced when it was announced, I don't know why, but I was just very busy. 'Just had a lot of work schedules, a lot of press around The Roses, around Doctor (Who).' Asked about the speculation surrounding his withdrawal, Gatwa, who did not watch this year's competition, said: 'I was just very busy.' The actor appeared on the Sunday morning news show to discuss the West End premiere of Born With Teeth, a play that re-imagines the relationship between rival playwrights Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare. Gatwa plays Marlowe with his Sex Education co-star Edward Bluemel as Shakespeare in the Royal Shakespeare Company production at London's Wyndham's Theatre from August. 'It's a really great story between these two huge literary icons, and it's very exciting to imagine what could have happened in a room together', he said.
