Centre: In touch with ‘friendly' nations to save Nimisha Priya

New Delhi/Kochi: India is in touch with "friendly" countries to save Nimisha Priya, said the Union govt even as mediation talks involving religious leaders reportedly continued in Yemen's capital city of Sana'a on Thursday. Priya is facing death sentence for murdering Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi and a section of the victim's family has reportedly opposed the mediation involving representatives of religious leaders. Priya's execution was scheduled for Wednesday (July 16), but it was postponed after a preliminary round of talks. The Union govt officially confirmed that Priya's death sentence in Yemen had been postponed without elaborating further. Centre said it was a very sensitive matter and it had been offering all possible assistance in the case, including legal help, and appointed a lawyer to assist Priya's family. "We have also arranged for regular consular visits by her family. We are also in touch with local authorities as well as the family members to resolve this issue. This included concerted efforts in the recent few days to seek more time for the family of Miss Nimisha Priya to reach a mutually agreeable solution with the other party," said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo "We continue to closely follow the matter and render all possible assistance in the case. We are also in touch with some friendly govts in this regard," said the official. In the past, Iran, the principal backer of Yemen's Houthis, had said that it would look into the issue. Meanwhile, the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council informed that another round of discussions was held on Thursday regarding the possibility of accepting blood money and granting a pardon to Priya, who hails from Kollengode in Palakkad. The council said the talks made remarkable progress. Priya was convicted of murdering Mahdi in July 2017, with whom she had started a health clinic in Sana'a and later reportedly married. A trial court sentenced her to death in 2018, which was upheld by an appeals court. Subhash Chandran of the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council said the talks were ongoing between religious leaders and the victim's family, following the intervention of Sunni leader Kanthapuram Aboobacker Musaliyar. Meanwhile, he ruled out reports that opposition from a section of Mahdi's family members was affecting the talks. "Only one person in the family is against the move to settle the issue. That is not affecting the talks," he said. Meanwhile, Abdul Fattah Mahdi, who claims to be the brother of Talal Abdo Mahdi, posted on social media on Thursday that the family was sticking to the earlier demand of executing Priya. "We have not met or held discussions with anyone until now. Our position is firm and we adhere to implementing God's law — only retribution," said Abdul Fattah's Facebook post in Arabic, with a Malayalam translation and an attached image of Malayalam news reports regarding the progress of negotiation talks.

'Sensitive matter,' making efforts to reach 'mutually agreeable solution' with Yemen: MEA on Nimisha Priya case

NEW DELHI: India on Thursday said it is in touch with Yemeni authorities as well as certain friendly nations as part of efforts to reach a "mutually agreeable solution" in the case relating to Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse on death row in Yemen. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the government is making concerted efforts to seek more time for Priya's family to reach some kind of an understanding with the family of the Yemeni man Priya is convicted of killing. The 38-year-old Indian national's execution was scheduled for July 16, but it was postponed following intervention of Indian officials. She is presently lodged in a jail in Sana'a, the Yemeni capital city that is under the control of Iran-backed Houthis. "This is a sensitive matter and the government of India has been offering all possible assistance in the case," Jaiswal said at his weekly media briefing. The nurse, hailing from Kollengode in Kerala's Palakkad district, has been found guilty of murdering a Yemeni citizen in July, 2017. In 2020, a Yemeni court handed her the death sentence and the country's Supreme Judicial Council dismissed her appeal in November 2023. "We have provided legal assistance and appointed a lawyer to assist the family. We have also arranged regular consular visits and been in constant touch with the local authorities and the family members to resolve the issue. "This included concerted efforts in recent days to seek more time for the family of Nimisha Priya to reach a mutually agreeable solution with the other party," the MEA spokesperson said. Jaiswal said local authorities in Yemen have postponed carrying out Priya's sentence that was scheduled for July 16.
