Hawala dealer Sahil Jain's uncle arrested by DRI in multi-crore gold smuggling case

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) said Tuesday it has arrested a fourth person in connection with the gold smuggling case involving Kannada film actor Ranya Rao and Telugu actor Virat Konduru alias Tarun Konduru. According to DRI officials, Bharat Kumar Jain, a jewellery and hawala trader, was arrested in late July, and sent to 14 days of judicial custody. Bharat Kumar Jain is the uncle of Sahil Sakariya Jain, 27, a hawala dealer who is the third accused in the Bengaluru gold smuggling case that unravelled in March this year after the arrest of Ranya Rao, alias Harshavardhini Ranya, 33. Bharat Kumar Jain was involved in the distribution of the gold smuggled into India from Dubai by the two actors, and for hawala transfers of funds to facilitate the smuggling, DRI said after it presented him before a judge for special economic offences in Bengaluru. Sahil Jain and Bharat Jain have allegedly been found to be part of a sophisticated smuggling network operating in India and abroad. Gold smuggling case in Kolkata Sources said Bharat and Sahil were named in complaint filed by DRI under the Customs Act in a Kolkata magistrate's court on March 5, 2022, in a case involving smuggling of 41.64 kg of gold where they are alleged to have arranged couriers for the transport of large quantities of gold from the West Bengal capital to other cities in India like Mumbai and Raipur. Between 2019 and 2020, DRI received intelligence that a smuggling syndicate operating from Kolkata, Mumbai, and Raipur was smuggling foreign-marked gold from Bangladesh through the Indo-Bangladesh borders of North 24 Parganas in West Bengal. Based on the intelligence, DRI carried out operations to recover the smuggled gold and intercepted persons carrying smuggled gold in Kolkata, Raipur, and Mumbai, leading to the recovery of 41.64 kg of gold. One of the gold carriers, who was found with 6.98 kg of gold in Mumbai in December 2019, reported that the intended receiver of the gold was Sahil Jain, who was living in Mumbai at the time. He was arrested by DRI and found to be a key player in a major smuggling racket. Bengaluru gold smuggling case DRI has alleged Ranya Rao smuggled 49.6 kg of gold valued at over Rs 40 crore from Dubai between November 2024 and February 2025. This was apart from the 14.2 kg of gold worth Rs 12.56 crore that was seized on March 3 by DRI at the Bengaluru airport. Rao is alleged to have handed over the gold to Sahil Jain, who paid for the consignments through hawala transfers of funds to Dubai and India. Sahil was arrested on March 26 by DRI after he was identified during investigations as the intended recipient of 14.2 kg of gold smuggled from Dubai by Rao in association with Konduru Raju. Ranya Rao, Virat Konduru, and Sahil Jain were ordered on April 22 by the Centre to be detained for a year under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act (COFEPOSA). The Cofeposa advisory board in Bengaluru recently confirmed their April 22 Cofeposa detention order.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Chaudhary Satyapal Singh Malik passed away on Tuesday at the age of 79. The news was confirmed through a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle. Malik, who had been ailing for some time, had shared a photo of himself from a hospital bed, days after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a chargesheet against him and six others in a high-profile corruption case related to the Rs 2,200-crore Kiru Hydroelectric Project in Jammu and Kashmir on May 25. I'm currently admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi and not in a condition to talk,' he had written on X. CBI chargesheet and controversies CBI filed a chargesheet against Malik, his two private secretaries, and four others in connection with alleged irregularities in awarding civil works for the Kiru Hydroelectric Project. The 624-MW run-of-the-river scheme is being developed over the Chenab River in Kishtwar district by Chenab Valley Power Projects Private Limited. According to the CBI, the contract, worth Rs 2,200 crore, was awarded without adhering to mandated e-tendering guidelines. The chargesheet also named Navin Kumar Choudhary, then chairman of Chenab Valley Power Projects, along with MS Babu, MK Mittal, Arun Kumar Mishra, and the construction firm Patel Engineering Limited. Live Events The investigation stems from a 2022 request by the Jammu and Kashmir government to probe the alleged kickbacks in the project. In 2024, the CBI conducted searches at eight locations in Delhi and Jammu, followed by a sweeping raid across 30 premises in 2025, including sites linked to Malik. The agency recovered digital evidence, property documents, and over Rs 21 lakh in cash. Officials claimed to have found multiple incriminating documents. Allegations of substandard work and failure to provide employment to local youth have also been levelled against the project. A long and eventful political journey Born in 1946, Satyapal Malik entered politics in 1965-66, inspired by the socialist ideals of Ram Manohar Lohia. He rose to prominence early, becoming President of Meerut College Students Union in 1966-67 and later the President of the Students Union of Meerut University in 1968-69. In 1974, Malik was elected as a Member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Baghpat on a Bharatiya Kranti Dal ticket and was appointed the party's Chief Whip in the Assembly. A year later, he was named All-India General Secretary of the newly formed Lok Dal. He entered the Rajya Sabha in 1980 and joined the Congress in 1984. During his time with the Congress, Malik was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1986 and served as the General Secretary of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee. However, in 1987, he resigned over the Bofors scam and co-founded 'Jan Morcha', which later merged with the Janata Dal. He became its national spokesperson and secretary and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Aligarh in 1989. He also served as Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Tourism in 1990. In 2004, Malik joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), contesting elections from Baghpat. Over the next decade, he held several key organisational roles, including Vice President of BJP Uttar Pradesh, All-India Incharge of Kisan Morcha, and National Vice President. He also contributed to the party's 2014 Lok Sabha election manifesto, focusing on agriculture. Governorship and key appointments Malik was appointed Governor of Bihar in 2017 and later transferred to Jammu and Kashmir in August 2018. He served in the crucial post during a politically sensitive period, including the run-up to the abrogation of Article 370. His term ended in October 2019. During his political and administrative career, Malik held several parliamentary positions, including serving on the Panel of Chairmen in the Rajya Sabha and Panel of Speakers in the Lok Sabha. Satyapal Malik's life was marked by a willingness to speak out—be it in protest of corruption scandals or while in constitutional office. His later years, however, were overshadowed by the CBI probe, culminating in the chargesheet filed just hours before his passing.

Scorpio, Thar, Fortuner: SUVs Block Busy Gurugram Road To Shoot Reels

A convoy of nearly two dozen vehicles, including a luxury convertible and multiple SUVs, blocked a key intersection in Gurugram's Sector 108 on Sunday evening. The group brought traffic to a halt for several minutes, allegedly to shoot social media content. The incident took place near residential high-rises Shobha City and Experion Heartsong, on the stretch connecting Sector 108 to the Dwarka Expressway. Over a dozen vehicles, including a white Mercedes-Benz SLC convertible, Aston Martins, Toyota Fortuners, Mahindra Thars, Scorpios, and several hatchbacks, were involved. The scene was captured in a video later uploaded to social media. The video showed two men standing on the seats of the Mercedes-Benz convertible with the roof down, while others filmed them from nearby vehicles. Several individuals were seen leaning out of sunroofs or standing on footrests, cheering as the convoy blocked the entire road. Leading the convoy was a Mercedes-Benz SLC, seen in the video and priced at approximately Rs 80 lakh (ex-showroom). Residents alleged that the vehicles were fitted with illegal sirens, which were blared throughout the stunt. The noise and obstruction reportedly brought traffic to a standstill for over seven minutes, disrupting commuters and residents trying to pass through the area. The convoy was not part of any official shoot. The caption of a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) read, "Aston Martin, sirens, and lawlessness on full display in Gurugram. 22 cars. Hooligans blocking a key road near Sector 108 for reel-making. Blared illegal hooters, disrupted traffic for over 7 minutes. Residents fuming. Not a film shoot-just another day of arrogance on wheels. Thankfully, police have booked the culprits and will seize all vehicles, including the Rs 4 crore Aston Martin." "If your content disrupts public life, it's not a reel, it's a crime," the caption added. Gurugram Police acknowledged the incident and said that the matter has been "forwarded to the concerned officer for necessary action."
