Mohe instructs universities to assess SST expansion's impact on students amid concerns of rising costs
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir said the objective of the study is to determine whether the SST expansion, which came into effect on July 1, has directly or indirectly contributed to higher learning costs.
'We will examine in detail what is meant by the alleged increase in costs. What has been announced by the government relates to higher fees for international students coming to study in Malaysia due to increased tariffs or taxes on their education,' he said.
'We've already communicated this matter and gathered feedback. However, there may be other elements, either directly or indirectly, affecting local students as well,' said Zambry, who is also Barisan Nasional secretary-general and Umno Supreme Council member, to reporters after officiating the Umno Merbok Division meeting here today.
Expanding on the matter, Zambry said the study would cover all aspects related to student learning, including utility costs such as electricity for those living in rental housing.
Previously, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) Student Representative Council president Mohamad Amar Aidid Mohd Zain was reported as saying that the expanded scope of SST, effective since Tuesday, was believed to have financial implications for students.
According to Mohamad Amar Aidid, the inclusion of digital subscriptions, electronic repairs, laundry services and online purchases under the SST has had a direct impact on students' cost of living.
Meanwhile, Zambry said the Malaysian Higher Education Blueprint 2025–2035, developed by the ministry, has been finalised and is expected to be launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim this November.
On reports of university students being diagnosed with HIV, Zambry said the ministry is leaving it to the respective institutions to monitor the situation and take appropriate action. — Bernama

PETALING JAYA : PAS is not interested in chasing after the prime minister's post or lobbying for top government positions, says party vice-president Idris Ahmad. He said the party's culture has always been guided by humility and a focus on service, not ambition for power. 'We don't chase the position to the point of lobbying or fighting for it. Leaders from Gerakan and Bersatu have publicly stated that Muhyiddin Yassin remains PN's sole candidate for the position. Idris also said that what matters to PAS is helping PN perform better than Pakatan Harapan, not fighting over who should be the prime minister. 'The appointment of the prime minister depends on the name submitted to the king. Even discussing this requires consensus within PN,' he said. 'Let us win first. Then whoever is qualified can take the role. The position of prime minister is not something PAS is fighting over.' He said this approach is deeply rooted in the leadership style of party president Abdul Hadi Awang, who once declined to contest a state seat in Terengganu during the 14th general election despite pressure to lead the state. 'Tok Guru Hadi proposed Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar instead. At that time, Samsuri was the election director and didn't even know he would be contesting,' he said.

Zahid outlines BN strategy to recapture three Lumut seats
LUMUT: Barisan Nasional is determined to recapture three seats in Lumut currently held by Perikatan Nasional, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Barisan chairman said the three seats are the Lumut parliamentary seat as well as the Pangkor and Pasir Panjang state seats. He outlined four conditions he said are critical to regaining voter confidence and winning the seats in the 16th General Election. "Firstly, Umno and Barisan leaders in Lumut must stand united, with no room for division. Our political opponents are not as strong as we think… it is our internal weaknesses and the loss of confidence in our own party that have hurt our cause the most. "Old habits such as backstabbing, blaming leaders and finger-pointing must stop immediately. "Unity within the Lumut division is the first and foremost condition for victory," he said when officiating the Lumut Umno representatives meeting at Dewan Merdeka, Majlis Perbandaran Manjung on Sunday (July 6). Also present were Perak Umno chairman Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Lumut Umno chief Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir. Ahmad Zahid also said victory cannot be achieved alone, and urged Umno members to strengthen ties with their partners in MIC and MCA who are currently facing challenging times. "They stood by us during our hardship. Now it is our turn to support them, to ensure Umno and Barisan candidates dominate both state and parliamentary seats again. The same goes for our cooperation with Pakatan Harapan, " he said. Thirdly, he asked the party to let go of the past and accept today's political reality. Umno sets up legal team to sue over defamation, vows to act against social media slander targeting leaders
KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — Umno will take firm legal action, including filing lawsuits, against individuals who spread slander or tarnish the reputation of its leaders. Its secretary-general, Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, said this move aligns with the establishment of a Legal Secretariat at the Umno headquarters, which is tasked with monitoring and addressing defamatory content involving the party and its leadership. "Umno has not traditionally resorted to lawsuits or legal notices, but given the rampant misuse of social media to attack our leaders, it is time for the party to respond more assertively,' he said after officiating the Bukit Bintang Umno division delegates meeting today. Asyraf Wajdi added that other political parties have long used legal channels to counter false allegations and negative perceptions, and Umno will now adopt a similar strategy to hold irresponsible individuals accountable. In a related development, he said Umno has agreed to establish an Outstation Voters Department as a strategic initiative to engage with voters who reside outside their home constituencies, particularly in the run-up to the next general election. Nearly 40 per cent of voters in certain parliamentary constituencies, he noted, are based in areas such as the Klang Valley and Selangor. "At the recent Supreme Council meeting, we approved a proposal from the Bukit Bintang division to form this department.
