Eugenio Suárez homers in consecutive innings for Diamondbacks to reach 300 for his career

DENVER — Eugenio Suárez homered in consecutive innings to become the third Venezuelan-born player to reach 300 on Friday night in the Arizona Diamondbacks' 14-8 victory over the Colorado Rockies. HT Image
Suárez hit a 405-foot shot to left-center field off Austin Gomber to it in the fifth, then connected off reliever Ryan Rolison in the sixth, a 398-foot shot to left that made it 11-7.
The 33-year-old third baseman trails only Miguel Cabrera and Andrés Galarraga among Venezuelan-born players.
'It means a lot. I never thought this guy from Venezuela would put my name on that list,' Suárez said. 'It's very special, it's very good. It feels like a dream come true.'
His teammates congratulated him in the dugout after his second home run of the night, and he was again celebrated in the clubhouse after the game.
'We honored a great baseball player, but an even better human being,' manager Torey Lovullo said. 'It was a special moment. His teammates mean a lot to him. His accomplishments obviously speak for themselves — 300 home runs is unbelievable. He said he never dreamed it would happen, but he's glad that it did.'
Suárez tops Arizona with 24 homers and took the major league RBI lead with 65. He has nine home runs in June and six in his last eight games. He has at least 21 home runs in each of the last nine full seasons, hitting a career-high 49 with Cincinnati in 2019.
He has hit 50 homers since the end of May 2024, his first season with the Diamondbacks.
'The beginning of last year was tough for me,' he said. 'A lot of people think that was it for me because I started the season so slow, not hitting for power. It feels great.'

Will Anshul Kamboj Make Test Debut In Manchester? Shubman Gill Gives Big Update

Last Updated: 24-year-old Anshul Kamboj was added to India's Test squad on Monday (July 21), and the Haryana-based cricketer could make his Test debut on Wednesday in Manchester. News18 24-year-old fast bowler Anshul Kamboj on Monday (July 21) was added to India's Test squad for the last two matches of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, and the youngster could make his red-ball debut on Wednesday (July 23). According to India's Test captain Shubman Gill, Kamboj, who has 79 wickets to his name in 24 first-class matches played so far, is very close to making his debut in Manchester. The fourth Test of the ongoing five-match series between India and England will be played from July 23 to 27 at Old Trafford in Manchester. 'We have seen his (Kamboj) skill set. We have the belief that he can win matches for us. Kamboj is close to making his debut tomorrow. You are going to see whether it is him or Prasidh Krishna," Gill said during India's pre-match press conference on Tuesday (July 22). Kamboj, who made headlines last year for taking all 10 wickets in an innings of a Ranji Trophy match for Haryana against Kerala in Rohtak, last played a red-ball match in June 2025 for India A against England A. In that match, the Karnal-born pacer picked up a total of four wickets (2 in each innings) and also scored an unbeaten 51 runs in the second innings after coming out to bat at No. 9 in Northampton. 'Rishabh Pant will keep wickets in the fourth Test against England in Manchester," Gill said. Pant played as the wicketkeeper for only 35 overs in the third Test due to the injury, with Dhruv Jurel doing the duty for the rest of the match. In fact, Jurel had an underwhelming time behind the stumps during England's second innings, conceding 25 byes, and the home side won the third Test by 22 runs. The India captain has also backed Karun Nair even as he struggled to register big scores in the series. 'We think he is batting well. In the first match, he didn't play at his number. No issues with his batting. Once you are able to get to 50 and get in the zone. We are hopeful that he can turn it around, Gill said of Nair, who so far produced scores of 0, 20, 31, 26, 40, and 14 in the first three Tests. view comments First Published: July 22, 2025, 17:58 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Weatherald puts name in Ashes reckoning with big hundred

Sydney, July 22 (UNI) Tasmania opener Jake Weatherald's 13th first-class century has ensured he will be part of the Ashes selection conversation after putting Sri Lanka A to the sword in Darwin. Just a week after Australia's head coach Andrew McDonald said his openers for the first Test against England weren't locked in, Australia A's Weatherald blitzed 183 to continue to build his case for a baggy green on November 21. On a docile Marrara pitch, the Darwin-born left-handed opener had some nervous moments as he approached his milestone and had to sit on 96 not out over the lunch break. A quick single off quick Shiran Fernando brought up his century, which he celebrated by placing his helmet on the end of his bat and raising it above his head, much to the delight of his teammates. The 30-year-old crashed everything outside off for four and was selective in his big shots against the spinners and was only out, chopped on, in the final overs of the day. He shared a 209-run partnership with his captain Jason Sangha, who not to be outdone, finished the day unbeaten on 121 as the hosts reduced the Lankans' lead to 106 runs with a day to play. Sangha hit a series of delightful drives in his typically innings, which will no doubt ease the pain of making a duck in last week's four-day fixture. Weatherald is coming off the best summer of his career where he finished as the leading run-scorer in the Sheffield Shield, plundering 905 runs with centuries against Queensland (186), Victoria (155) and New South Wales (145). That led to a promising 54 on Australia A debut in the first four-day match last week, and when met with another favourable batting surface ensured he took full toll against the visiting Sri Lankans. "As a batter, you're trying to put yourself forward to play for Australia. That's why we're here," Weatherald said after play on day three. "It's why you play domestic cricket. Making runs is your best currency to getting higher honours. "It was a good opportunity to make a big score and thankfully, I made one today." In the wake of last week's Test series win over West Indies, Australia coach Andrew McDonald confirmed there was still plenty to play out before the selectors settled on their openers for the Ashes. "It feels as though we're still a little bit unsettled in terms of what our combinations look like at the top of the order with the way that the performances have gone here (against West Indies)," McDonald said after the Caribbean red-ball matches. "There's a lot of cricket still to come to be able to gather that information." Weatherald admitted the selectors hadn't been in touch with him about the prospect of higher honours but was heartened by his selection in the Australian A side. "If you keep making runs, of course, you're going to get noticed more. And I've done that," Weatherald said. "I'm batting well and I'm ready to go if it comes to that moment." Earlier, the Aussies resumed the day on 1-76 and NSW No.3 Kurtis Patterson compiled a composed 59 before Sonal Dinusha took a sharp catch at backward point from a full-blooded square drive. However with no demons in the Marrara wicket, it was a day for the batters with Australia A chalking up 2-203 for the day, in reply to Sri Lanka A's commanding 6d-485. UNI BM

"Love To Play Against India": Italy Coach Reveals Special Wish After T20 World Cup Qualification

Having led Italy to their maiden World Cup qualification, the European team's Australia-born captain Joe Burns wants to "jump in at the deep end" during the T20 showpiece next year by taking on defending champions India in the opening match itself. Italy made the cut for the event in India and Sri Lanka next year with a solid showing in the European Qualifiers that concluded earlier this month. The draws for the World Cup are still some time away from being finalised. "You come to your first World Cup and you want the big stage. I'd love to be playing India in the first game in India," Burns told ICC Digital. "I'd love to be playing Australia, England or all the top teams, that's the experience that you're after. You want to test yourself, you want to really jump in at the deep end," he added. Burns said qualifying for the tournament was still a "surreal" feeling for him. "A lot of planning and preparation went into it (qualifying). So it's satisfying from that aspect from the cricket side as well," he said. He said the entire process was emotional for him and for the rest of the team. "We did one week training camp in Rome, one week in the UK, and I said to them the first day in Rome, 'I don't care if we're playing Luxembourg in the first Sub-Regional game or India in a World Cup Final. I just want us to be the most prepared team in world cricket'..., A former Australia player with four Test centuries to his credit, Burns made it to the Italian squad due to his mother's heritage. It helped him pull through a personally challenging phase which included dealing with the death of his brother Dominic. "For me, it was an opportunity to unite family and cricket, and I think for our group, everyone has a really similar story to that. "We did a great culture piece in Rome (in the build-up to the Qualifier), about who we are, where we come from, understanding each other's families and sacrifices made...," he said. Former Canada international John Davidson is the head coach of the team, with ex-Scotland international Dougie Brown and Ireland star Kevin O'Brien as his assistants. "I've seen a group of players who have grown and developed into a really close-knit group," O'Brien said. "That can be difficult with players coming from different parts of the world but the common joining force with this squad is the Italian heritage. "I've seen the guys improve, and that is not only with their cricket skills, it's all the other things that you need to be successful in International cricket, like attitude, fitness, awareness, cricket smarts, and work ethic," he added.
