Knicks' Josh Hart listed as potential trade candidate this offseason

The New York Knicks are going to be looking at a variety of ways to improve the roster this offseason. After coming up just short of reaching the NBA Finals this past season, they will want to substantially improve the team to give them a better chance at winning a title.
It is still unclear how they will approach the trade and free agent markets. They are also still in the midst of a head coaching search, so things could look a bit different next season.
Knicks could trade Josh Hart this summer
If they conduct a massive trade, it could come at the cost of one or multiple core pieces. Bleacher Report's Dan Favale listed Josh Hart as a likely trade candidate should the Knicks make a big move this summer.

'If the New York Knicks are going to do anything substantial this offseason, it will require parting with one of their top six players. Process of elimination narrows it down to Josh Hart or Mitchell Robinson,' Favale wrote. 'Hart wins out over Robinson because he's making $6.5 million more ($19.5 million versus $13 million), but also because he's less of an anomaly. Nobody else on the roster brings Robinson's combination of size, interior deterrence, offensive rebounding and (when healthy) mobility.'

Hart is one of the more impactful players on the roster, but it became clear that his fit in the starting five was wonky. He wasn't aggressively looking to score, which allowed teams to throw their big man on him since he wasn't much of a threat to score.
Hart must be traded only for a clear upgrade
This, in turn, hurt the Knicks' floor spacing, as there wasn't enough offensive aggression from him to help open up the floor. Trading Hart would be a tough decision, as his rebounding and playmaking abilities are still very much useful in a bench role.

However, if they can move him for a clear upgrade, New York shouldn't hesitate to consider a deal for him. The Knicks are looking to take the next step towards winning a championship, and doing so comes at the cost of making tough decisions.

Ultimately, there is currently no indication that the Knicks are looking to trade Hart, but anything could happen in the coming weeks that quickly changes that.

Hall of Fame horse trainer D. Wayne Lukas, a winner of 15 Triple Crown races, dies at 89
D. Wayne Lukas, the Hall of Famer who became one of the most accomplished trainers in the history of horse racing and a face of the sport for decades, has died. He was 89. His family said Sunday that Lukas died Saturday night at his Louisville, Kentucky, home. Lukas had been hospitalized with a severe MRSA blood infection that caused significant damage to his heart and digestive system and worsened pre-existing chronic conditions. 'Wayne devoted his life not only to horses but to the industry — developing generations of horsemen and horsewomen and growing the game by inviting unsuspecting fans into the winner's circle,' his family said in a statement. 'Whether he was boasting about a maiden 2-year-old as the next Kentucky Derby winner or offering quiet words of advice before a big race, Wayne brought heart, grace, and grit to every corner of the sport. His final days were spent at home in Kentucky, where he chose peace, family, and faith.' Lukas won 15 Triple Crown races, including the Kentucky Derby four times. Only good friend Bob Baffert has more Triple Crown victories, and Lukas owns a record-tying 20 in the Breeders' Cup World Championships. 'The whole secret of this game, I think, is being able to read the horse: Read what he needs, what he doesn't need, what he can't do, what he can do,' Lukas said in May before his 34th and final Preakness Stakes. 'That's the whole key. Everybody's got the blacksmith, everybody's got to the same bed available, the feed man. We all can hire a good jockey. We all can hire a pretty good exercise rider if we've got the means, so what the hell is the difference? The horse is the difference and what we do with him in reading him.' Lukas has 4,967 documented victories in thoroughbred racing, with his horses earning more than $310 million from more than 30,600 starts. 'Today we lost one of the great champions of Churchill Downs and one of the most significant figures in Thoroughbred racing over the last 50 years,' Churchill Downs Inc. CEO Bill Carstanjen said. 'We will miss his humor, his wisdom and his unmatched capacity to thrill the fans with the performances of his horses on our sport's biggest days.' Achieving something of a career renaissance over the past decade, one he credits to finding the right owners willing to spend money on horses, Lukas won the Preakness last year with Seize the Grey. Asked what motivates him to keep doing his job well into his late 80s, he gave a pep talk fit for a locker room before a big game. 'If you have a passion, you eliminate all the excuses,' Lukas said. 'That's how it works. You get up early. You go without a meal. You drive. You go without sleep — as long as you got the passion. Don't let that sofa pull you down. It's a little easy when that alarm goes off to say, 'Oh my God, I don't know if I really want to do this today.' Erase that. According to Dave McMenamin ESPN, Doncic is still motivated by everything that happened following the Mavericks' shocking decision to trade him to the Lakers in February. Doncic now has a full offseason with his new team. In February, he had to immediately make the adjustment to playing for his first franchise other than the Mavericks in the NBA. Doncic displayed signs of his MVP-caliber play in LA, but one has to imagine he will take a step forward after a full offseason of preparation with the Lakers. The 26-year-old averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 1.6 steals per game. He also shot 43.8 percent from the field and 37.9 percent from beyond the arc. Injuries limited Doncic during the 2024-25 season, but he played well while on the floor. When healthy, Luka is an MVP candidate. The Lakers' outlook is intriguing. With LeBron James and Luka Doncic leading the way, they will likely be a serious contender in 2025-26. LA also needs to think about the future, though. They are beginning the process of building around Doncic while also still trying to compete in the near future. Advertisement If Doncic does indeed have extra motivation — which is being reported — he may even take a step forward. Although Doncic is becoming a veteran in the NBA, he still is only 26 years old. Luka could realistically get even better and that is a frightening thought for opposing teams.
