The main event is held at Shivaji Park in Mumbai. May 1st is also observed as International Labour Day, making it a day of double celebration in 2025. Government offices, banks, and schools remain closed. Liquor shops are also shut as the state observes a dry day.
Why do we celebrate Maharashtra day 2025?
Maharashtra Day 2025 is celebrated on May 1 to mark the formation of the state in 1960. It was created after the Bombay State was divided into Maharashtra for Marathi-speaking people and Gujarat for Gujarati-speaking people.
This division happened due to the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement. The movement was a strong and emotional struggle with protests and sacrifices. It aimed to form a state based on language and culture.
Gujarat Day 2025: Bank closures and liquor sale restrictions
On Gujarat Day 2025, all banks in the state will remain closed as it is a public holiday. This is as per the official bank holiday calendar for Gujarat. Gujarat follows strict prohibition laws as a dry state, so the sale of alcohol is generally banned on major public holidays, dry days, election days, and important festivals. On Gujarat Day, these rules apply strictly.

Telangana Public Service Commission defends decision to conduct Group-I Mains before high court, denies any procedural violations
Hyderabad: The Telangana Public Service Commission (TGPSC) on Thursday defended the conduct and evaluation of the Group-I Mains examination, asserting before Justice Namavarapu Rajeshwar Rao of the high court that there was no mala fide intent or violation of statutory procedures, as alleged by the petitioners challenging the examination process. Representing the commission, its counsel argued that the examination was conducted transparently and in strict adherence to established procedures. He urged the court to consider the far-reaching consequences of annulling the examination in the absence of concrete evidence. 'The process was transparent. A significant number of qualified candidates belong to OBC, SC, ST, women, and physically challenged categories. Cancelling the examination on vague and unsubstantiated grounds would deal a severe blow to hundreds of aspirants who have invested years of preparation,' he submitted. The counsel further stated that the petitioners had failed to make specific or substantiated allegations. 'Except for a solitary writ petition containing a vague assertion, no petitioner has produced credible evidence of malfeasance. There are no claims of mala fides, no breach of statutory rules, and no indication that either the examination centres or the evaluation process was compromised,' he argued. He emphasised that the evaluation was conducted anonymously and randomly, using expert evaluators trained specifically for this exam. He denied allegations of selective evaluation or manipulation in the allotment of answer scripts. Addressing concerns raised about Telugu medium candidates, the commission clarified that evaluators proficient in both English and Telugu were appointed, and hence, the assessment was fair and unbiased. Regarding impersonation concerns, the commission submitted that biometric verification of candidates was conducted and cross-checked with nominal rolls approved by the chief superintendents at the respective centres. The high court is scheduled to continue hearing the matter on Friday.

Thane man beaten up: Accused made to touch his feet & apologise in front of ex-Sena UBT MP
Two days after a video of a man being beaten up by three men outside the Thane railway station went viral, another video has surfaced in which the accused are made to fall at his feet and apologise by the Shiv Sena (UBT). One of the accused is even slapped. All this happens in the presence of former Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Rajan Vichare in a closed room. In the video, the three men are told to speak in Marathi despite not knowing the language and are warned 'such things will not be allowed in Maharashtra'. On Monday, the three men beat up Thane resident Kiran Jadhav (43) outside a mobile phone store near the Thane railway station. Soon after, Shiv Sena (UBT) workers reached out to Jadhav and took him to the Thane Civil Hospital. The party workers then lodged an FIR at the Naupada police station against the three men identified as Shanmukh Pujari, Saurabh Jaiswal and Jayantilal Purohit. 'Jadhav wanted to recharge his SIM card at the mobile phone store. When one of the accused said the shop did not have the facility to do it and it must be done online, it led to an argument. The accused then beat up Jadhav,' a police officer said. As the sections involved were not major, police issued a notice to the accused and allowed them to leave. Several Shiv Sena (UBT) workers had gathered at the Naupada police station in support of Jadhav. Next day, two of the accused were brought to an office where Vichare and Jadhav were present. On camera, the accused were asked to identify themselves and fall at the feet of Jadhav and apologise. Nudged by someone, Jadhav also slapped one of the accused, as seen in the video. Later, in the video, Vichare is heard telling the accused that they beat up a 'Marathi manoos' and 'it won't work in Maharashtra'. The accused, standing with their hands folded in one corner, apologised again following which they are asked to talk to everyone in Marathi, to which they agree. Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray said the incident has nothing to do with Marathi-non-Marathi issue. 'There was an altercation between them over disagreement in a shop over charging of phone. This has been mentioned in the FIR as well. It has nothing to do with language of either of them. I urge all to not give it a colour of any dispute over language,' Thackeray said.
