BJP & BJD spar over govt's one-year performance

Time of India04-06-2025
Bhubaneswar: With the BJP-led govt in Odisha nearing its first anniversary in power, ruling party MLAs and opposition BJD locked horns over the administration's performance on Wednesday, highlighting contrasting narratives of success and systemic failures.
BJP MLAs Jayanarayan Mishra and Irasis Acharya, separately praised the Mohan Charan Majhi-led govt for what they termed as "widespread development" across the state. "This has been a historic year for Odisha," said Sambalpur MLA Mishra, emphasising significant initiatives for farmers and women's welfare, during a media interactions on the anniversary of party's election victory in Odisha. He also challenged the BJD to account for its previous 24-year tenure.
Bhatli legislator Acharya said the govt and BJP would present detailed report cards showcasing its "glorious performance" across various sectors. "From farmers to women, youth to the poor, Odisha has witnessed remarkable positive changes," he claimed.
However, BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty countered these claims by citing a May 15 note sheet from the chief minister's office that acknowledged significant administrative delays.

"Files are pending at various levels without sufficient justification, from ministers to department secretaries and directors," Mohanty told a press conference.
He criticised the govt's plans for grand celebrations, questioning their appropriateness when internal communications indicate administrative bottlenecks. "How can they celebrate so-called successes when their own documents reveal systemic failures?" he asked.
The political face-off comes exactly one year after BJP's victory in the assembly election, marking the end of BJD's long tenure in power.

Mamata raises Durga Puja grant to Rs 1.10 lakh, BJP alleges move to woo clubs ahead of polls

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday announced an increase in the Durga Puja grant to ₹1.10 lakh for 40,000 Puja organising committees this year. In addition, the Puja organisers will receive an 80 percent concession on electricity charges. Last year, the state government provided ₹85,000 as a grant to Puja committees. At the time, the Chief Minister had declared that this year a grant of ₹1 lakh would be given to each committee. However, she eventually announced an additional ₹10,000, which the opposition BJP has alleged is an attempt at 'buying favour' from thousands of local clubs ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections in West Bengal. Addressing a coordination meeting of Puja committees at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata, Banerjee said, 'Durga Puja is not just a religious celebration. It is the lifeline of Bengal's cultural identity. Our praner utsab (festival of the heart). We are proud that UNESCO has recognised it as 'intangible heritage'.'

Amartya Sen opposes detention of Bengal's migrant workers in other states

KOLKATA: Nobel laureate Amartya Sen on Thursday spoke against the detention of hundreds of migrant workers from West Bengal in states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha and Delhi on the suspicion that they are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen (HT FILE PHOTO/Samir Jana) 'This issue is not related only to Bengal. India is a democratic nation. We will object if any Indian from any state is tortured or neglected in another state,' Sen, who lives in the US, told reporters after reaching 'Pratichi,' his ancestral home at Santiniketan in West Bengal's Birbhum district. Since most detainees have alleged that they were singled out only because they speak Bengali, Sen focused on the language. 'Bengali has a historic value. Great men like Rabindranath Tagore and Nazrul Islam gave us priceless gifts in this language. The heritage of the language cannot be ignored,' he said. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party on this issue, alleging that Bengali-speaking people were being branded as Bangladeshis for political reasons in the run-up to the 2026 state assembly polls. 'Nobody should panic. It is our duty to protect citizens. If BJP thinks this is how it can delete the names of genuine voters and win elections, as it did in Delhi and Maharashtra, then it is making a big mistake,' Banerjee said in Kolkata on July 22. Her party, the Trinamool Congress, has launched a year-long Bhasha Andolan (language movement).

US mortgage rate shift: 30-year home loan eases to 6.72% after Fed decision; housing demand stays weak

The average rate on a 30-year fixed US mortgage slipped to 6.72% this week, down slightly from 6.74% a week earlier and matching levels last seen three weeks ago, mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said on Thursday. The minor decline offers limited relief for buyers grappling with high home prices and borrowing costs. A year ago, the 30-year rate was 6.73%. The average rate for a 15-year fixed mortgage, often used for refinancing, also fell to 5.85% from 5.87%. These marginal rate changes come as the US housing market remains mired in a prolonged sales slump, dating back to 2022, when mortgage rates began rising from pandemic-era lows. Mortgage rates are primarily guided by the 10-year Treasury yield, which fell to 4.34% on Thursday from 4.37% the previous day. Bond yields have been elevated for most of July, as markets anticipated the Federal Reserve would hold rates steady, which it confirmed on Wednesday. Fed Chair Jerome Powell also dismissed hopes for a rate cut in September, citing persistent inflation and a still-balanced job market. 'A September rate cut could push mortgage rates lower at summer's end, as we saw last year,' said Lisa Sturtevant, chief economist at Bright MLS. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Acton - This Trusted Tool is Helping Drivers Quickly Compare Auto Insurance Rates Policy Auto Pro Get Quote Undo 'But if inflation expectations stay elevated, rates could remain stuck above 6%.' The 30-year mortgage rate peaked above 7% in mid-January and briefly dipped to 6.62% in April. Forecasts from and Fannie Mae suggest it may ease to around 6.4% by year-end, still too high to reverse the downturn in housing activity. Pending home sales data point to more weakness ahead. The National Association of Realtors reported a 0.8% decline in June contract signings from May, and a 2.8% drop from a year earlier. The homeownership rate, meanwhile, remains stagnant at 65%—its lowest since 2019. Mortgage applications also declined 3.8% last week to their lowest level since May, despite the recent rate dip. 'There is still plenty of uncertainty surrounding the economy and job market, which is weighing on prospective homebuyers' decisions,' said Joel Kan, deputy chief economist at the Mortgage Bankers Association.
