India Gazette13-07-2025
Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], July 13 (ANI): Odisha Pradesh Congress committee spokesperson, Rajani Kumar Mohanty, has questioned the silence of the Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, after a student allegedly attempted self-immolation in protest over charges of sexual harassment by her teacher.
'Crime against women is increasing at an alarming rate in Odisha. Yesterday, Rahul Gandhi visited and said that every day 15 women are facing serious crimes and the state government is not paying attention... A student self-immolated due to continuous harassment by one of the teachers... Justice has not been delivered... Why are the Chief Minister and Deputy CM silent?... Why was there no inquiry?...', Mohanty told ANI on Saturday.
The Higher Education Department, Odisha, on Saturday constituted a committee to conduct a thorough inquiry into the alleged harassment case against Samira Kumar Sahu, Assistant Professor, FM Auto College. This comes after the suicide attempt by a girl student of the college in Balasore.
According to the order, the committee, in its inquiry, will ascertain the circumstances which led to self-immolation, the involvement of the professor in the case and the role of the college administration, principal and Internal Complaint Committee in dealing with any prior complaints.
The committee will also identify lapses of any individual or authority and identify any other incidental matter that emerges during the inquiry.
'The committee is authorised to seek assistance from any person as deemed necessary for conducting the inquiry and submit the report to the Higher Education Department,' the order said.

'Over 30 hours already lost': RS deputy chairman Harivansh laments repeated adjournments

New Delhi, Jul 24 (ANI): Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh conducts the proceedings of the house during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, in New Delhi on Thursday. (Sansad TV/ANI Video Grab) NEW DELHI: As Opposition parties continued to disrupt proceedings in the Rajya Sabha to press for a discussion on the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, Rajya Sabha deputy chairman Harivansh reminded them that the issue was already being adjudicated by the court, while also flagging the loss of over 30 hours of members' time in the current session to the repeated adjournments. Stating that the members have had an opportunity to raise 120 starred questions, 120 zero hour submissions and 120 special mentions since the start of monsoon session, Harivansh lamented that barely 11 starred questions, 3 zero hour submissions and 17 special mentions have been taken up. 'Total time lost was 30 hours and 6 minutes. This time belongs to members and (is) not the government's business time. The mandate given by the people has not been fulfilled. It is high time for us to introspect,' he said, addressing his opposition benches. Citing the resolution unanimously adopted by the Rajya Sabha on September 1, 1997, stating that 'the prestige of Parliament be preserved and enhanced, also by conscious and dignified conformity to the entire regime of rules of procedure and conduct of business of the Houses and directions of the presiding officers relating to orderly conduct of business,' Harivansh said the opposition members need to introspect on their conduct in light of the resolution. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Experts Tested 17 Hearing Aids. DMK's Tiruchi Siva, Congress's Pramod Tiwari and CPM's John Brittas tried to insist on govt indicating the day and time for a discussion on SIR, but the Chair dismissed this saying the court is already adjudicating the issue. He further added that EC being a constitutional body, 'there are provisions for discussions relating to it'. As members continued to protest the rejection of their notices under 267, the deputy chairman adjourned the House till 12 noon.

Father of girl who drowned in school sump moves court for compensation

Father of four-year-old Aarudra, who died after drowning in the sump of a private school in K.K. Nagar in Madurai, has filed a petition before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking appropriate compensation. He blamed the Madurai district administration and the school for negligence that resulted in the death of his daughter. The petitioner T. Amuthan of Uthangudi said he had admitted his daughter to Sri Kindergarten Playschool in K.K. Nagar. On April 29, she drowned in an uncovered sump inside the school premises at around 10.20 a.m.. It was due to the gross negligence on the part of the school authorities and failure of duty on the part of officials, he said. He said the school owed a duty of care towards his daughter and blatantly breached it, resulting in her untimely death. The school authorities had failed to maintain a safe and secure environment for the students. They failed to take precautions to prevent such foreseeable accidents. There was a clear lack of supervision and security. The authorities had a statutory duty to inspect the school premises before granting recognition to private schools, as mandated by Tamil Nadu Private Schools (Regulation) Rules, 2023. The authorities failed to conduct a proper site inspection and did not carry out periodic inspections thereafter, he said. He said the school conducted unauthorised summer classes despite instructions prohibiting the same. As per Rule 38 there were no first aid facilities in the school and the staff lacked training in handling emergencies. Madurai district administration and the school have to pay just and fair compensation for the death of his daughter, he said and sought a compensation of ₹50 lakh. Justice S. Srimathy ordered notice to Madurai district administration and the school authorities and posted the matter for hearing to August 22.

Middle East crisis: Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff meets Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu; ceasefire on agenda

Steve Witkoff (ANI image) and Benjamin Netanyahu (AP image) US President Donald Trump 's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, arrived in Israel on Thursday to discuss the worsening humanitarian condition in Gaza as the death toll of Palestinians waiting for food and other aid continues to rise. The meeting between Witkoff and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ended, according to an Israeli official, as reported by CNN. Witkoff's visit coincided with new US sanctions targeting officials from the Western-backed Palestinian Authority. He had been expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to talk about the crisis in Gaza and the possibility of a ceasefire. This marks the first meeting between Witkoff and Netanyahu since both the Israeli and US delegations withdrew from negotiations in Qatar last week. At the time, Witkoff stated that Hamas 'shows a lack of desire' to reach a truce. Under growing international pressure, Israel announced new measures over the weekend to allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza. However, aid agencies say the current efforts fall short. The Israeli defense body in charge of coordinating humanitarian aid in Gaza said 270 trucks of aid entered Gaza on Wednesday and 32 pallets of aid were airdropped into the Strip. However, humanitarian groups say that at least 500 to 600 trucks per day are needed in Gaza. International criticism of Israel's handling of the Gaza crisis has intensified. Several organizations have warned that Gaza has been at risk of famine for two years, and that a complete aid blockade for more than two months has now pushed the situation into what they describe as an unfolding famine. German foreign minister Johann Wadephul is also visiting Israel and the West Bank over the next two days. While Germany has long supported Israel, it has recently become more vocal in urging Israel to increase aid to Gaza and support a ceasefire. Unlike France, Britain and Canada, Germany has not announced plans to recognize a Palestinian state in September. However, before his departure, Wadephul emphasized that Germany sees a two-state solution as the only path to lasting peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians. 'For Germany, the recognition of a Palestinian state stands rather at the end of the process. But such a process must begin now. Germany will not move from this aim," Wadephul said.
