"Why CM silent"? Odisha Congress after self-immolation attempt at Balasore college
'Crime against women is increasing at an alarming rate in Odisha. Yesterday, Rahul Gandhi visited and said that every day 15 women are facing serious crimes and the state government is not paying attention... A student self-immolated due to continuous harassment by one of the teachers... Justice has not been delivered... Why are the Chief Minister and Deputy CM silent?... The Higher Education Department, Odisha, on Saturday constituted a committee to conduct a thorough inquiry into the alleged harassment case against Samira Kumar Sahu, Assistant Professor, FM Auto College.This comes after the suicide attempt by a girl student of the college in Balasore.
According to the order, the committee, in its inquiry, will ascertain the circumstances which led to self-immolation, the involvement of the professor in the case and the role of the college administration, principal and Internal Complaint Committee in dealing with any prior complaints.
The committee will also identify lapses of any individual or authority and identify any other incidental matter that emerges during the inquiry.
'The committee is authorised to seek assistance from any person as deemed necessary for conducting the inquiry and submit the report to the Higher Education Department,' the order said.
Earlier, the Balasore Police arrested the accused in the self-immolation attempt case.
According to Balasore SP Raj Prasad, the police have established prima facie evidence against the teacher who was involved in the self-immolation case of the female student.
The victim had lodged a complaint with the Internal Compliance Committee on June 30.
'In the case of a female student who attempted self-immolation, prima facie evidence has been established against a teacher. He has been arrested and forwarded to the court. This student had lodged a complaint with the Internal Compliance Committee on 30th June. We are enquiring about the findings of their report. Whoever is found guilty, accountability will be fixed for them,' he said.
The Higher Education Department of the Odisha government on Saturday suspended the Assistant Professor and Principal of FM (Auto) College, following the self-immolation attempt of the college student.
'The government has contemplated that the matter has not been handled properly by Dillip Kumar Ghose. He has failed to perform his duties in the capacity of Principal of the college. He is hereby placed under suspension under sub-rule (2) of rule 12 of the Odisha Civil Services (Classification, Control & Appeal) Rules, 1962, with immediate effect', the letter said. (ANI)

Father of girl who drowned in school sump moves court for compensation
Father of four-year-old Aarudra, who died after drowning in the sump of a private school in K.K. Nagar in Madurai, has filed a petition before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking appropriate compensation. He blamed the Madurai district administration and the school for negligence that resulted in the death of his daughter. The petitioner T. Amuthan of Uthangudi said he had admitted his daughter to Sri Kindergarten Playschool in K.K. Nagar. On April 29, she drowned in an uncovered sump inside the school premises at around 10.20 a.m.. It was due to the gross negligence on the part of the school authorities and failure of duty on the part of officials, he said. He said the school owed a duty of care towards his daughter and blatantly breached it, resulting in her untimely death. The school authorities had failed to maintain a safe and secure environment for the students. They failed to take precautions to prevent such foreseeable accidents. There was a clear lack of supervision and security. The authorities had a statutory duty to inspect the school premises before granting recognition to private schools, as mandated by Tamil Nadu Private Schools (Regulation) Rules, 2023. The authorities failed to conduct a proper site inspection and did not carry out periodic inspections thereafter, he said. He said the school conducted unauthorised summer classes despite instructions prohibiting the same. As per Rule 38 there were no first aid facilities in the school and the staff lacked training in handling emergencies. Madurai district administration and the school have to pay just and fair compensation for the death of his daughter, he said and sought a compensation of ₹50 lakh. Justice S. Srimathy ordered notice to Madurai district administration and the school authorities and posted the matter for hearing to August 22.

The meeting between Witkoff and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ended, according to an Israeli official, as reported by CNN. Witkoff's visit coincided with new US sanctions targeting officials from the Western-backed Palestinian Authority. He had been expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to talk about the crisis in Gaza and the possibility of a ceasefire. This marks the first meeting between Witkoff and Netanyahu since both the Israeli and US delegations withdrew from negotiations in Qatar last week.
