In a landmark development for India's clean energy ambitions, five hydrogen fuel cell-based buses were officially flagged off on Thursday for commercial operations in Leh district of Ladakh, home to the world's highest motorable roads.
This is India's first-ever commercial deployment of hydrogen-powered buses, marking a globally significant leap toward sustainable mobility in extreme terrains.
As per news agency PTI, the green hydrogen buses were handed over by NTPC Limited to the State Industrial Development Corporation (SIDCO) in a formal ceremony held at NTPC's hydrogen mobility station in Palam, Leh.
Administrative secretary of the transport department Bhupesh Chaudhary inspected the green hydrogen plant, including its production, storage, and dispensing systems.
He commended NTPC's technological feat in executing this project at high altitude and highlighted its role in achieving a carbon-neutral Ladakh.
Chief secretary Pawan Kotwal lauded the 'pioneering efforts' of NTPC, stating that the successful operationalisation of hydrogen buses in such extreme terrain 'could usher in a new era of hydrogen fuel cell mobility in India.' He also directed the corporation to document all operational learnings for replication across other regions.

his initiative is the result of collaborative efforts between NTPC and the Ladakh administration.
It stands as a powerful symbol of India's growing leadership in renewable energy innovation and aligns with the Centre's broader push toward net-zero emissions.
The world's first hydrogen fuelling station at such a high altitude, 11,562 feet above sea level, was launched by NTPC in November last year. Co-located with a 1.7 MW solar plant, the station operates entirely on renewable power.
The project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by around 350 metric tonnes annually and contribute 230 metric tonnes of pure oxygen, equivalent to planting nearly 13,000 trees.
NTPC, India's largest integrated power utility with over 81 GW of installed capacity, has an ambitious plan to reach 60 GW of renewable energy by 2032.
With 9.6 GW of green capacity under construction, the hydrogen mobility initiative in Ladakh represents a crucial step in the company's clean energy transition.

Mark Zuckerberg's AI Push Accelerates as Meta Acquires Voice Startup PlayAI

Meta's aggressive push in artificial intelligence continues, with the company acquiring a voice technology startup named PlayAI. This acquisition underscores CEO Mark Zuckerberg's vision to transform Meta into a global leader in AI innovation. The PlayAI team is set to join Meta's growing AI division next week, according to an internal memo cited by Bloomberg. The startup specializes in voice cloning and voice generation, offering tools that create natural-sounding, AI-generated speech. This technology will now support a variety of Meta's projects, including AI assistants, content creation tools, and next-generation wearables. PlayAI's employees will report to Johan Schalkwyk, a recent addition to Meta's leadership who previously worked at Sesame AI, another company focused on voice technologies. Under his guidance, the PlayAI team will contribute to Meta AI initiatives such as AI Characters and audio innovation for both user and creator platforms. While the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, Meta has confirmed the acquisition. The company noted that PlayAI's core strengths in voice replication and platform development align with its strategy to integrate AI more deeply into user experiences across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and its hardware products. This latest deal follows a string of major moves from Meta in the AI space. Just last month, Meta invested a staggering $14.3 billion in Scale AI, a company that specializes in training data for AI systems. Along with the investment, Meta brought Scale AI's CEO, Alexandr Wang, on board to head its newly formed Meta Superintelligence Labs. This division focuses on creating advanced AI systems that aim to go beyond current human capabilities. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made it clear that artificial intelligence is Meta's top strategic priority for the year. Billions of dollars have already been funneled into building proprietary AI chips, expanding data centers, and developing powerful generative models. The acquisition of PlayAI may not match the scale of the Scale AI deal, but it represents a highly focused bet on voice technology—a rapidly growing area within AI. Voice-based features are expected to play a major role in how users interact with devices and services in the near future. From conversational assistants to voice-enabled content creation, the applications are broad and impactful. Meta has previously dabbled in language and voice-based AI tools, with experimental AI assistants being tested across platforms. This new acquisition points to a more serious and long-term commitment to voice-first AI interfaces. Despite the growing excitement, Meta hasn't released a concrete timeline for when users will begin to see PlayAI's tech integrated into its apps or devices. However, the company has made it clear that voice interaction will become a cornerstone of its AI-powered future. As the AI race intensifies among tech giants, Meta's recent moves indicate it's not just participating—it's aiming to lead. With both small and large acquisitions under its belt, Meta is steadily assembling the infrastructure and talent needed to push the boundaries of what AI can do.

Swiss woman uses AI to lose 7 kg: 'Instead of complicated apps I just sent a voice message to ChatGPT each morning'

Cristina Gheiceanu, a Swiss content creator who 'lost 7 kg using ChatGPT', shared her success story on Instagram in a May 15 post. She revealed that she sent daily voice notes to ChatGPT detailing her meals and calorie limits. Cristina said she found this method simple and effective, allowing her to track her food intake and stay consistent without feeling burdened by traditional dieting. Woman says she lost 15 kg with 4 prompts that helped her go from 100 to 83 kg Cristina Gheiceanu shared details of her weight loss journey using ChatGPT on Instagram. (Instagram/ Cristina Gheiceanu) Determine your calorie deficit In her post, titled 'How I lost 7 kg with ChatGPT', Cristina gave a glimpse of what her body looked like 5 months ago. In the video, she 'showed exactly' how she used the AI-powered tool to help her her decide her breakfast, keeping her weight loss goals in mind. She said, 'I just start my day with a voice note: 'Hey it is a new day, let's start with 1900 calories'. Then I say what I ate. Because I have been using it for a while, ChatGPT already knows the yoghurt I use, and the protein, fibre, calories it has. When I first started, I had to tell those things, but now ChatGPT remembers.' Cristina added, 'Honestly, it made the whole process feel easy. No calorie counting in my head, no stress – and when I hit my number (daily calorie intake), I just stop. It never felt like a diet, and that is what made it work.' Track your food intake Cristina wrote in her caption, 'At first, ChatGPT helped me figure out my calorie deficit and maintenance level, because you will need a calorie deficit if you want to lose weight. But what really changed everything was using it for daily tracking. Instead of using complicated apps, I just sent a voice message to ChatGPT each morning: what I ate, how many calories I wanted to eat that day — and it did all the work.' Sharing her experience, she added, 'In the beginning, I had to tell it the calories, protein, and fibre in the foods I use. Next time it remembered everything, so I was just telling it to add my yoghurt or my bread. It knew how many calories or protein are in that yoghurt or bread. I kept using the same chat, so it became faster and easier every day. The best part? I asked for everything in a table — so I could clearly see my calories, protein, and fibre at a glance. And if I was missing something, I'd just send a photo of my fridge and get suggestions. It made tracking simple, intuitive, and enjoyable. I eat intuitively, so I don't use it so often, but in the calorie deficit and first month of maintenance, it made all the difference.'
