Microsoft cancels Perfect Dark Reboot production, closes studio behind the game
The decision was confirmed in a memo from Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios. According to the memo, the cancellation of Perfect Dark and Everwild led to the closure of The Initiative. Booty also mentioned that several other unannounced projects across Microsoft's gaming portfolio would be wound down, The Verge reported.

The Initiative was created by Xbox in 2018 with the goal of reviving the Perfect Dark series. The game was to be co-developed with Crystal Dynamics, a studio known for the Tomb Raider series. Perfect Dark, a first-person shooter originally developed by Rare for the Nintendo 64 in 2000, had its reboot's first gameplay shown in 2024. However, the game did not appear in Microsoft's June 2025 showcase, where it had been expected to feature prominently.

Everwild, a game by Rare announced in 2019, also faced development challenges. The project was restarted from scratch in 2021, but it is now also being cancelled. Rare itself remains active despite the recent changes.
These cancellations come amid a larger pattern of layoffs and restructuring within Microsoft's gaming division. Since acquiring Activision Blizzard for $69 billion, Microsoft has repeatedly cut jobs. The company laid off 1,900 employees in January 2024, closed studios like Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks shortly after, and reduced staff again in September 2024 by 650 employees. In May 2025, Microsoft cut an additional 6,000 jobs, equal to about three percent of its entire workforce. This recent round marks the fourth major layoff affecting Microsoft's gaming operations in 18 months.

Industry reports indicate that other Xbox studios may also face job cuts. For example, Raven, known for the Call of Duty franchise, and Turn 10, the developer behind Forza Motorsport, are also rumoured to be reducing staff. These moves come as Microsoft prepares to release next-generation Xbox consoles and maintain a strong presence at major gaming events like Gamescom. 'We have a great, great team and we're putting all of our energy behind it,' he noted. Although Apple's capital expenditure this year has seen an upward trend, the company continues to rely on third-party partners for some infrastructure needs, which has tempered the increase. Amazon, Apple, Meta and Microsoft earnings rise Tech giants Amazon, Apple, Meta and Microsoft this week eclipsed earnings expectations, cashing in on artificial intelligence (AI) while navigating economic waters roiled by U.S. tariffs. 'Massive results seen by Microsoft and Meta further validate the use cases and unprecedented spending trajectory for the AI Revolution on both the enterprise and consumer fronts,' Wedbush tech analyst Dan Ives said in a note to investors. 'We have barely scratched the surface of this 4th Industrial Revolution now playing out around the world led by the Big Tech stalwarts such as Nvidia, Microsoft, Palantir, Meta, Alphabet, and Amazon,' Ives added. Amazon reported a 35% jump in quarterly profits as the e-commerce giant said major investments in AI technology are paying off. 'Our conviction that AI will change every customer experience is starting to play out,' said Chief Executive Andy Jassy, pointing to the company's expanded Alexa+ service and new AI shopping agents. Apple to open its wallet on AI Apple CEO Tim Cook signaled that the iPhone maker was ready to spend more to catch up to rivals in AI by building more data centers or buying a larger player in the segment. YouTube to use AI to estimate age YouTube will deploy an age estimation model to detect if U.S.-based users under 18 are using its video sharing platform. Based on the estimation, the platform will provide a safer user experience for the minors. YouTube emphasised that it had followed this approach in other markets ahead of gradual rollout in the U.S. The age estimation model uses signals such as YouTube activity and the longevity of the account to detect whether the user is a minor. If it deciphers the user to be under 18, it will notify them so they can submit a photo-based ID and verify their age. In case YouTube flags the user as under 18, it will enable the standard protections for teen accounts on YouTube. These include showing only non-personalised ads, enabling 'take a break' and bedtime reminders, showing reminders about privacy when making public actions, and minimising video recommendations that could be 'problematic.'
