The Naked Gun Reboot a 'One-Off' says Star Liam Neeson
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Naked Gun's 2025 reboot will likely be the franchise's last, the film's star Liam Neeson tells Newsweek in an exclusive interview. Why It Matters Neeson's turn as Frank Drebin Jr. in Paramount's reboot of The Naked Gun has reignited interest in slapstick comedies and brought new life to a classic franchise. The film's strong box office performance and overwhelmingly positive critical reception prompted speculation about possible sequels. Liam Neeson attends "The Naked Gun" U.K. premiere at Cineworld Leicester Square on July 22, 2025, in London, England. Liam Neeson attends "The Naked Gun" U.K. premiere at Cineworld Leicester Square on July 22, 2025, in London, Paramount Pictures What To Know The Naked Gun reboot, which was released on Friday, accumulated over $28 million globally on its opening weekend—$17 million in North America and $11.5 million internationally—ranking among the most successful comedy releases of this decade. Despite these numbers and a high score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Neeson told Newsweek that he doesn't anticipate returning to the role for a sequel. "I think it's a one-off, yeah," Neeson, 73, said of the franchise's future. "And if it succeeds, good." Neeson stars as the son of Leslie Nielsen's iconic character Frank Drebin from the beloved trilogy of the 1980s and 1990s. Co-starring Pamela Anderson and Paul Walter Hauser, the reboot is directed by Akiva Schaffer and produced by Seth MacFarlane. It delivers a barrage of visual gags and slapstick humor reminiscent of the original films while introducing the franchise to a new generation. "I think the film's going to have a few giggles and a few laughs in it, and God, we all need that at the minute," Neeson said. "I think it's probably a one-off. Not that the experience wasn't great, it was. It's terrific, working with Pamela, Danny Huston, all these terrific guys." The reboot's response from critics has been overwhelmingly positive. The Independent's Clarisse Loughrey awarded the film four stars, calling it "a masterclass in buffoonery." Rotten Tomatoes registered a very high rating for the film, making it one of the best-reviewed comedies of the 2020s, per Forbes. The original 1988 film The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! was directed by David Zucker and starred Nielsen, Priscilla Presley and Ricardo Montalban. It grossed over $78 million domestically, per Box Office Mojo, and launched two sequels, solidifying its place as a comedy classic. What People Are Saying Producer Seth MacFarlane said of Neeson's fit for the role, in an interview with The New York Times: "Liam is probably the only actor alive who in the 21st century could play Frank Drebin....[performers like Nielsen] were people who all had that gravitas that when you had them saying absurd things, it was just priceless since there was so much weight to what they were saying. We don't make those kinds of actors in Hollywood anymore." Original franchise director David Zucker voiced disinterest in the reboot in an interview with Fox News Digital: "I don't see any reason to see it." What Happens Next The possibility of a sequel remains uncertain. While strong box office receipts and critical acclaim could prompt studio interest in continuing the rebooted franchise, Neeson's statements suggest fans should not expect him to reprise his role. If the franchise continues, it may do so with new talent. In the meantime, the impact of The Naked Gun's return underscores both the viability of legacy comedy revivals and the enduring appeal of well-executed slapstick. 1980s actor Loni Anderson of the hit TV series 'WKRP in Cincinnati' has died
Loni Anderson, who played a struggling radio station's empowered receptionist on the hit TV comedy 'WKRP in Cincinnati,' died Sunday, just days before her 80th birthday. Anderson died at a Los Angeles hospital following a prolonged illness, said her longtime publicist, Cheryl J. Kagan. 'We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our dear wife, mother and grandmother,' Anderson's family said in a statement. 'WKRP in Cincinnati' aired from 1978 to 1982 and was set in a flagging Ohio radio station trying to reinvent itself with rock music. The cast included Gary Sandy, Tim Reid, Howard Hesseman, Frank Bonner and Jan Smithers, alongside Anderson as Jennifer Marlowe, whose good looks were matched by her intelligence. As the station's receptionist, the blonde and high-heeled Jennifer routinely deflected unwanted business calls for her boss, Mr. Carlson. Her efficiency often kept the station running in the face of others' incompetence. The role earned Anderson two Emmy Award nominations and three Golden Globe nominations. Anderson starred on the big screen alongside Burt Reynold s in the 1983 comedy 'Stroker Ace,' and the two later married and became tabloid fixtures before their messy breakup in 1994. Their son, Quinton Reynolds, was 'the best decision that we ever made in our entire relationship,' she said during the unveiling of a bronze bust at Reynolds' Hollywood grave site in 2021. 'I think back to the beginning of our relationship, it was so, oh, gosh, tabloidy. We were just a spectacle all the time. And it was hard to have a relationship in that atmosphere. And somehow, we did it through many ups and downs,' Anderson told The Associated Press. Anderson detailed their tumultuous marriage in the 1995 autobiography, 'My Life in High Heels,' which she said was about 'the growth of a woman, a woman who survives.' 'I think if you're going to write about yourself, you have to do it warts and all,' Anderson told the AP while promoting the book. 'You may not even tell the nicest things about yourself, because you're telling the truth.' She married four times, most recently to Bob Flick in 2008. Anderson was born Aug. 5, 1945, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Her father was an environmental chemist, and her mother was a model. Her first role as an actress was a small part in the 1966 film 'Nevada Smith,' starring Steve McQueen. Most of her career was spent on the small screen with early guest parts in the 1970s on 'S.W.A.T.' and 'Police Woman.' After 'WKRP,' Anderson starred in the short-lived comedy series 'Easy Street' and appeared in made-for-TV movies including 'A Letter to Three Wives' and 'White Hot: The Mysterious Murder of Thelma Todd.' In 2023 she co-starred in Lifetime's 'Ladies Of The 80s: A Divas Christmas' with Linda Gray, Donna Mills, Morgan Fairchild and Nicollette Sheridan. 'I am heartbroken to hear of the passing of the wonderful Loni Anderson!' Fairchild wrote on X. 'The sweetest, most gracious lady! I'm just devastated to hear this.' Anderson is survived by Flick, her daughter Deidra and son-in law Charlie Hoffman, son Quinton Anderson Reynolds, grandchildren McKenzie and Megan Hoffman, stepson Adam Flick and wife Helene, and step-grandchildren Felix and Maximilian. A private family service is planned at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Kagan said.
